Release list
v0.4.2
Fixes a real portability bug and adds a couple of small conveniences.
Fixed
- x86_64 Linux builds now start on real-world distros. The published v0.4.1 tarball and AppImage were built natively on this machine's newer glibc (2.43) and failed to even launch on Ubuntu 22.04/24.04 and similar (
GLIBC_2.43' not found). Both are now cross-built the same way the arm64 build already was, needing only glibc 2.18.
Added
- (i) About window — license, source, issues/contact, privacy policy and known limitations, one click away from the status bar.
- Copy to Clipboard — a row's context menu (Source and Results trees) can now copy that node's pretty-printed JSON straight to the clipboard, alongside Save….
Improved
- Autocomplete no longer pops up on whitespace — typing a space/tab to align a query no longer risks the next Tab being eaten as "accept suggestion" instead of indenting.
EscapeorCtrl+Spacereveals the suggestions explicitly at that position.

v0.4.1
Polish release: one Source field replaces the toolbar's Open buttons, and jq autocomplete and colour-coding now understand pipes and nested calls.
Changed
- Source field — the toolbar's Open File…, Open URL… and Clear buttons (and the Open URL popup) are now one row:
Source: [type or paste a URL or path] […] [Load] [Clear]. Load (orEnter) downloads anhttp(s)://address and opens anything else as a local path; a leading~expands to your home directory and one pair of surrounding quotes is stripped, so a "Copy as path" paste just works. … browses for a file and loads it straight away. The field names whatever is loaded; pasted JSON leaves it empty with a(pasted JSON)note beside it, and a failed load keeps your text so you can correct it.
Improved
- jq autocomplete follows pipes and calls — inside
.members | map(select(.it now offers each member's fields instead of nothing. Where it can't tell what.refers to (a function it doesn't know, reduce,|=, a string), it offers nothing rather than the wrong fields. jq only, and still off by default — turn it on with the 💡 toolbar button. - Colour-coded query box tints nested calls — in
map(select(.active) | .name)the innerselect(.active)now has its own tint, and a call's closing bracket takes the same tint as its opener. The tutorial tints closing brackets too.

v0.4.0
Feature release: a built-in tutorial, a proper Find dialog, and a colour-coded query box.
Added
- Tutorial window — the 📖 toolbar button (or
F1) opens a separate window with a lesson tree for each of jq, JSON Pointer, JSONPath and JMESPath (63 lessons). Every example shows its query broken down piece by piece, with a live result; ▶ Try it loads the example's data and query into the main window so you can edit and experiment. - Colour-coded query box — each step of what you type (
.members,[],select(…),.name; a Pointer's/segments) is tinted in the same palette the tutorial uses, so a long query's structure reads at a glance. - Find dialog —
Ctrl+Fopens a Notepad++-style Find dialog with the cursor already in its field. Find (orEnter) steps through the matches with a running "3 of 17"; Find All lists every match in a panel below, where a click reveals it. - Snap package —
sudo snap install jsonquery-gui(also on the Snap Store).
Improved
- Find in Source matches a result row's key and value (and an array element's position) instead of jumping to the first equal value anywhere in the document. One hit is revealed directly, several are listed with the best guess selected, and a computed value falls back to a text search.
- Autocomplete offers array indices after
[and inserts text spelled for the dialect (.["first name"]in jq,$["first name"]in JSONPath,."first name"in JMESPath). It adds the.after a], pipes a name that follows a finished operand (| abs), andEscnow just closes the list instead of switching the feature off. It is still off by default — turn it on with the 💡 toolbar button.

v0.3.1
Bugfix release: a pasted document's Text view couldn't scroll at all.
Fixed
- The editable Text view for a pasted document (and the initial "Paste JSON here..." box) rendered its text box with no scrolling of any kind — no visible scrollbar, the mouse wheel did nothing, and not even Ctrl+End could bring the cursor into view. Long pasted documents were effectively stuck showing only their first screenful. Reported against a real ~230KB single-line JSON paste; now fixed by wrapping both text boxes in a proper scroll area.

v0.3.0
Adds an experimental query-box autocomplete for jq's built-in functions, a resizable query area, an "Expand All" action for capped/truncated result previews, and a Windows taskbar/Explorer icon. Also: a Homebrew tap (nujufas/homebrew-jsonquery-gui), converted docs (HTML -> Markdown, now readable directly on GitHub), and refreshed README/screenshots.
New since v0.2.0
- Inline autocomplete in the query box: as-you-type suggestions for jq's built-in functions with a short doc string each, toggleable from the toolbar (off by default).
- Query area is now resizable.
- "Expand All" for results capped by the live-preview budget; Search…/Save… over results transparently defer to the unbounded rerun.
- Windows build now embeds the app icon as a PE resource (shows up in Explorer/taskbar for the .exe itself, not just the running window).
- Homebrew tap:
brew tap nujufas/jsonquery-gui && brew install jsonquery-gui(Linux only for now). - Design docs moved from a styled HTML site to plain Markdown under
docs/, readable directly on GitHub.

v0.2.0
Adds three more query dialects alongside jq — JSON Pointer, JSONPath, and JMESPath — with an engine picker (or auto-detect from what you type), plus search, right-click context menus, save-to-file, and load-via-URL.
New since v0.1.0
- Engine picker: jq, JSON Pointer (RFC 6901), JSONPath (RFC 9535), JMESPath — auto-detected from the query text, or pick one explicitly.
- Search (substring/regex) across the source or results tree, with click-to-reveal.
- Right-click row context menus: copy a node's path, search from that scope, save just that node.
- Save the whole document, the whole result set, or a single node to a file.
- Load JSON from a URL, in addition to drag-and-drop, Open File…, and paste.
- Text-view rendering moved off the UI thread (no more freeze on large documents).
