v0.8.1
v0.8.0
A new default look, Trash and Recent, more file actions, and lower memory use with large images.
- Add the Glass theme preset as the default, with blurred content behind menus, dialogs and tooltips. Upgrade the look of every preset.
- Add Recent, Trash and devices to the sidebar, with Trash operations and free space status.
- Add Open with, Copy path, terminal here and Properties to the context menu.
- Show folder item counts. Guess the preview language from content and highlight Markdown. Preview unknown file types as text when the content is text.
- Show focus rings only during keyboard navigation. Keep scroll position and selection on refresh. Select the folder that was left after Parent and Back.
- Preview images up to 16384 pixels per side and 256 MiB encoded. Show "This image is too large to preview" above that.
- Include Goo 0.7.31: native image decode, GPU textures released with their image, decode memory returned to the system.
Measured on this release executable, RSS after a folder of six 5000x3300 JPEG and six 48 MiB PNG files with preview open is 235 MiB. It was 699 MiB on the previous build, which also rejected the PNG files. GPU memory after 200 image previews is 119 MiB, down from 179 MiB. Idle RSS is 211 MiB.
The Linux x86-64 executable is 18,055,448 bytes. Built on Ubuntu 24.04. Requires glibc 2.38 or newer, Wayland, and Vulkan 1.3 drivers. Third-party notices are embedded and available through gloop --licenses.
Download gloop-linux-x64.tar.gz and verify it with SHA256SUMS. The archive contains exactly one executable. The exact release binary passed the NativeAOT packaging checks and a native Wayland check of list, tiles, text preview and image preview.
v0.7.2
Reduce executable size, browsing memory use, and image-preview work while keeping one NativeAOT executable.
- Embed only 53 required Material icons instead of the full 4,128.
- Reduce directory and selection allocations, discard stale filter work, and release inactive list adapters.
- Bound image previews to the window framebuffer and use faster thumbnail resizing.
- Include Goo 0.7.13's Vulkan pointer-lifetime fix and smaller static SDL support.
The Linux x86-64 executable is 17,615,832 bytes, 14.2% smaller than v0.7.1.
The exact release binary passed NativeAOT packaging checks and native Wayland checks at normal, narrow, and 150% scale, plus selection, scrolling, preview, and split interactions.
Fresh v0.7.2 performance results cover Size and Speed builds, startup, CPU, RAM, GPU memory, and publish time. Measurements used the exact release Size executable. The README includes the method, run limits, and failed historical-baseline tile cohort.
v0.7.1
Fixes clipped highlights in bookmark, file, and folder context menus. Menus now dismiss on right-click, click-away, and window focus loss. Includes Goo and Goo.Svg 0.7.11.
Download gloop-linux-x64.tar.gz and verify it with SHA256SUMS. The archive contains one NativeAOT executable. Supported on Linux x86-64 with glibc 2.39 or newer, Wayland, and working Vulkan drivers.
v0.7.0
Gloop 0.7.0 adds a short first-run desktop setup flow and faster ways to manage bookmarks.
- Answer up to three in-app questions to install the launcher and choose folder and file-dialog defaults. Reopen setup from Preferences.
- Drag folders into or between sidebar bookmarks, and right-click a bookmark to remove it without deleting the folder.
- Preferences stays centered, uses 30% of the window width with a 360 px minimum, and fits its content up to 80% of the window height.
- Disabled context-menu items are easier to distinguish. Space-key activation is fixed for dialog and chooser buttons.
- Simpler README, source-build guide, and numbered performance notes.
Download and extract gloop-linux-x64.tar.gz, then run ./gloop. The archive contains one NativeAOT executable. No .NET runtime is required.
Supported target: Linux x86-64, glibc 2.39 or newer, native Wayland, and Vulkan 1.3 drivers. Tested on KDE Plasma. File-dialog integration applies to portal-capable dialogs, including custom per-app opt-ins where required. Ark's embedded extraction browser remains Ark-owned.
Verify the download against SHA256SUMS.
v0.6.0
Download gloop-linux-x64.tar.gz, extract it, and run ./gloop. The archive contains one NativeAOT executable.
- Add file context menus with file actions, folder actions and keyboard access.
- Add Gloop open and save dialogs for standard portal-capable applications, including local files and folders, filters, multiple selection and application options. Add native Wayland parent-window and modal support.
- Add explicit desktop-wide chooser selection and safe restoration of earlier preferences. Run
gloop --set-default-chooser, log out and back in, then restart applications. User installation requires xdg-desktop-portal 1.20.1 or newer. - Add AppStream metadata and reuse existing system-package launchers and chooser registration. Install the launcher, icon and metadata with
gloop --install-desktop. Folder defaults remain opt-in throughgloop --set-default. - Use a compact chooser header, center wrapped tile labels, and fix folder headings for paths with trailing separators.
Ark's Open Archive dialog can use Gloop. Ark's embedded extraction browser remains unchanged. Opening the destination after extraction uses the selected default folder application.
Linux x86-64 with glibc 2.39 or newer, Wayland and Vulkan 1.3. NativeAOT with Size optimization, built on Ubuntu 24.04. No .NET runtime or extra application packages. SHA-256 checksums are provided in SHA256SUMS. Source archives are available from this same version tag.
v0.5.3
Download gloop-linux-x64.tar.gz, extract it, and run ./gloop. The archive contains one executable.
- Click breadcrumb names to navigate. The redundant parent-folder menu is removed.
- Dialogs open without highlighting Close or showing its tooltip.
- The current hand-authored icon is embedded for the app and desktop integration.
- Includes list/tile browsing, previews, multi-selection, native file drag and drop, glob filtering, instant settings, and custom OKLCH themes.
