Setup Checklist

Go through this once on the machine where you make videos. Each item says how to check it.

1. Install

composer require ogunsakin01/laravel-video-demos
php artisan video-demo:install
  • The install ends with Next: … and no red errors.
  • It listed a Sample … user for each type of user in your app, such as Admin and Member. If it warned that the sample database couldn't be built instead, see Troubleshooting.
  • No warning that ffmpeg could not be run. If there is one, see Installation.

2. Your .env

ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-...          # or another provider's key
APP_URL=https://myapp.test # the address you open the app at
  • APP_URL is the address you really open the app at, with https if you use it, not http://localhost. If the app is served somewhere else, set VIDEO_DEMO_BASE_URL.
  • Your AI key is set. Without one, the studio says so at the top of the New video page.
  • Optional: VIDEO_DEMO_NAME="Acme help videos" for the name on the studio and library.
  • Optional: VIDEO_DEMO_MAX_COST=0.50 to change every new video's spending limit ($0.50 unless you set it).

After changing .env, run php artisan config:clear if your app caches its config.

3. Serve the app

  • The app opens in your browser at APP_URL.
  • It is served by Herd, Valet, PHP-FPM, or php artisan serve with PHP_CLI_SERVER_WORKERS=4 in .env. Not Octane.

4. Start the worker

php artisan queue:work video-demo
  • It is running, and stays running while you make videos. A plain queue:work doesn't pick up videos.
  • Your queue isn't sync. The New video page warns you if it is.

5. Open the studio

Go to /video-demo/studio.

  • The studio opens. If you get a 404, APP_ENV isn't local: set VIDEO_DEMO_STUDIO=true, and define the viewVideoDemoStudio gate outside your own machine.
  • On New video, Record as lists your types of user, such as Admin and Member. If it only offers Guest, list them in recorder.user_types.
  • Record on sample data is ticked.
  • The estimate shows a price, and the spending limit is $0.50.

6. Make a test video

Describe something short, such as "How a member opens their profile", pick 30 seconds and Desktop only, and press Generate video.

  • The progress shows Copying the sample database, then The AI is reading the code. If it says Building the sample database, it is a one-off and takes as long as your migrations and seeders.
  • It ends with Ready, and the video plays on the page.

If it fails, the page says why. See Troubleshooting.

7. Show it to your users

  • Publish the video, then open the library at /help/videos.
  • For production, set VIDEO_DEMO_DISK to a disk both machines reach, such as S3 or R2. See The Library.

After each update

composer require ogunsakin01/laravel-video-demos:^0.17 # the version you want
php artisan video-demo:install
  • A worker for video-demo is running again. Your videos and what they cost are kept.
