v0.2.0

@giswqs giswqs released this 13 Oct 02:55
cb23a1e

RustGIS v0.2.0 opens far more of your data, in the app and in the browser, and lets AI agents drive it. GeoPackage, GeoParquet, FlatGeobuf, KML and GPX open natively, large files stream a view at a time, and the web app at web.rustgis.app reads them too. SQL queries run through DuckDB, an MCP server lets AI agents make maps, and the ribbon is reorganised around the order of the work.

Highlights

  • More data, read in place: GeoPackage, GeoParquet and FlatGeobuf open in place, and large files are read a view at a time; KML and KMZ (styles included) and GPX open natively; zipped Shapefiles open, with the coordinate system from their .prj; PMTiles raster and vector archives open by web address or file; GeoTIFF adds palette images and files in their own projection. All of these work in the web app too (GeoPackages through a pure-Rust SQLite reader, PMTiles by web address). See the new Supported Data Formats page.
  • Export to more formats: layers export to GeoPackage, GeoParquet, Shapefile and KMZ, alongside GeoJSON, CSV, FlatGeobuf, KML, GPX and WKT.
  • SQL and DuckDB, and GDAL's formats: run SQL queries and open DuckDB databases through DuckDB Spatial, and read File Geodatabase, DXF and the other vector formats GDAL supports through ogr2ogr, when they are installed.
  • An MCP server for AI agents: rustgis-cli mcp lets Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and other agents run RustGIS commands and make maps, with the documentation built in.
  • A ribbon in the order of the work: tabs are now Home, Data, Style, Edit, Analyze, View and Publish. A permanent Style tab acts on the selected layer, the panes are Layers, Browser and Tools, and all 15 interface languages are translated.
  • Install and stay current: install with Homebrew, the AUR, Fedora COPR or winget; Help › Check for Updates tells you when a new release is out; Settings › Start-up picks the project, projection and extent the app opens with.

v0.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@giswqs giswqs released this 12 Oct 04:40
9d1c6c1

The first release of RustGIS: a fast, free and open-source desktop GIS written in pure Rust, with a ribbon workflow, for mapping, analyzing and sharing geospatial data. It runs natively on Windows, macOS and Linux and in the browser at web.rustgis.app. Your data stays on your machine unless you send it to an AI model you choose, and every action is a command you can script from rustgis-cli.

Highlights

  • Your data, any map: GeoJSON, CSV, Shapefile, GeoTIFF and cloud-optimised GeoTIFF, XYZ/TMS/WMS web tiles, Mapbox Vector Tiles and MapLibre styles, drawn on a 3D globe or in any projection.
  • Cartography and layouts: unique values, graduated colours and proportional symbols, collision-free labels, effects and extrusion, page layouts with map series and PDF export, reports and presentations.
  • Analysis: SQL selection, overlay and proximity tools, guided workflows (viewshed, IDW, shortest path, suitability), ModelBuilder and scripts, imagery tools, and over 1,000 GeoLibre and Whitebox tools for terrain, hydrology and LiDAR, natively and in the browser.
  • Editing: create and modify features with snapping and templates; domains, subtypes, attribute rules and relationships keep data valid; every change can be undone.
  • AI Assistant: ask about your data or tell the map what to do, with Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter, Ollama or any OpenAI-compatible model, in the app, the web app and rustgis-cli ask.
  • Scriptable and extensible: rustgis-cli runs any command by id; sandboxed WebAssembly plugins add commands, tools and ribbon tabs, with a registry at plugins.rustgis.app.
  • 15 interface languages, and packages for every desktop: Windows installers (setup.exe, .msi) and a portable zip, a signed and notarized macOS DMG, and Linux .deb, .rpm and AppImage.
