Alpha 0.1.3 — Crosshair Hotfix
Halo MCC VR — Alpha 0.1.3
Windows or your antivirus might flag the mod or move a file to quarantine. The Files are not verified so please use at your own risk. More knowledgeable people are yelling at me so I gotta disclose that to you all. Hopefully we can take care of this issue soon with some human review of the code itself. it's all there take a gander.
Fixed
- For some people having inverted controls go to the F1 Menu you can invert it
- Halo's native crosshair now remains visible if the authored floating-reticle
capture or its OpenXR swapchain cannot start. The mod no longer permits a
capture failure to leave the player with no aiming reference. kill_reticle = 0now works as an explicit emergency fallback to Halo's native,
head-centered crosshair.- The eye-order gate no longer risks leaving the native fallback in only one eye
after a successful floating-reticle redirect.
-QUEST users are highly encouraged to use STEAM LINK to achieve the smoothest performance
The corrected build was tested in a headset and confirmed working before this
package was created. All Alpha 0.1.2 gameplay, campaign-transition, scope, HUD,
and controller changes remain included.
Install or update
- Download and unzip
HaloMCCVR-alpha-0.1.3.zip. - Close MCC completely.
- Copy
halo3xr.dllandhalo3xr_launcher.exeinto your existing
Halo The Master Chief Collection\Halo_MCC_VRfolder, replacing the old files. - Start Steam and your OpenXR runtime, then run
halo3xr_launcher.exe.
Your halomccvr.cfg settings remain in place. If the floating reticle is still
unavailable on a particular runtime, close MCC, set kill_reticle = 0 in that
file, and relaunch to use Halo's native crosshair while collecting halo3xr.log.
Launch only through MCC's official anti-cheat-disabled mode. Do not use the mod in
anti-cheat-enabled matchmaking.

Alpha 0.1.2
Halo MCC VR — Alpha 0.1.2
A native OpenXR VR mod for Halo 3 in Halo: The Master Chief Collection (Steam).
Alpha 0.1.2 promotes the latest headset-tested build. It focuses on reliable
campaign transitions, correct stereo across headsets, usable weapon scopes, and
more flexible HUD and two-handed controls.
This is an early alpha. Halo 3 campaign is the tested path. ODST, online play,
custom games, Forge, every weapon, vehicle, headset/runtime combination, and long
session have not all been validated.
This code was written by AI. Every line was written by Anthropic's Claude and
OpenAI's Codex, directed by a human modder who made the decisions, ran the builds,
and confirmed results in a headset, but did not review every line. Treat it as
unaudited source. It is published under the MIT license so anyone can inspect,
learn from, or fork it.
What changed since 0.1.1
- Campaign transitions recover automatically. Leaving Halo 3 for the MCC shell
now detaches stale stereo state, and returning to Halo 3 recreates title-specific
hooks. The tested mission-exit/re-entry sequence restored 3D and tracking without
a fatal error or manual F1 toggle. - Cutscenes behave more naturally in VR. The mod preserves the VR frustum and
follows authored camera-shot facing through cuts and the return to gameplay. - Runtime-provided per-eye poses. Stereo cameras now use each OpenXR runtime's
reported eye positions and orientations instead of one fixed headset baseline. - Experimental universal scope. R3 opens a magnified world-only view aligned to
controller aim. Right-stick Y adjusts zoom while scoped. The final scope layout
and tighter lens were accepted in a Quest 3 headset test, but broader weapon
coverage is still needed. - Two-handed aim stays acquired. Once the support hand grabs the barrel zone,
two-handed aiming remains engaged while grip is held and releases with grip. This
exact DLL was headset-confirmed before packaging. - More HUD controls. Display & HUD now separates overall size, width/aspect,
curvature, and vertical height. The existing automatic headset correction stays
in place; the new controls are live trims. Width and height still need broader
headset calibration.
Install or update
- Download and unzip
HaloMCCVR-alpha-0.1.2.zip. Do not run files from inside
the ZIP. - In Steam, open MCC's Manage > Browse local files folder and create a folder
named exactlyHalo_MCC_VRinside it. - Copy
halo3xr.dllandhalo3xr_launcher.exeinto that folder. - Start Steam and your OpenXR runtime, then run
halo3xr_launcher.exe.
To update, close MCC and overwrite those two files. Your halomccvr.cfg remains.
Delete any old install.bat or uninstall.bat; current releases use manual file
copying only.

Halo MCC VR alpha 0.1.1
Halo MCC VR — Alpha 0.1.1
A native OpenXR VR mod for Halo 3 in Halo: The Master Chief Collection (Steam).
A small follow-up to alpha 0.1. Same VR core; this release is about giving you
control over the settings instead of locking them behind an installer prompt.
This is an early alpha. Halo 3 campaign is the tested path. ODST, online play,
custom games, Forge, every weapon, vehicles, scopes, and long sessions have not all
been validated.
This code was written by AI. Every line was written by Anthropic's Claude and
OpenAI's Codex, directed by a human modder who is not a programmer — he made the
decisions, ran the builds, and confirmed each result in a headset, but no human
reviewed every line. Treat it as unaudited source: the code is public precisely so
you can read it before you run it. Licensed MIT — fork it, learn from it, do whatever
is useful.
What changed since 0.1
Pick your own resolution. resolution_scale accepts any value from 0.35 to
2.00 and is honored exactly — type 0.90 and you get 90%, where before it silently
rounded down to the nearest of six presets. Anything above 1.00 supersamples; the
2.00 ceiling is 5824x4200. The named tiers (Potato/Low/Medium/High/Ultra/Keith
David) survive as one-click shortcuts in the F1 menu.
The settings file is now documented and hand-editable.
Halo_MCC_VR\halomccvr.cfg is written on first run with a plain-English
description, default value, and accepted range above every setting, so you can put
anything back the way it was without reinstalling. Delete the file and it
regenerates with defaults. F1 → Advanced also has a two-click "Reset ALL settings
to defaults".
The left hand can be resized. It never could before: the size trim was applying
the right wrist's bone list to the left hand, so no left-hand size value ever
reached a bone. There is now a separate left_hand_scale (F1: "Left hand size",
with a Match weapon button) covering the support hand and the second gun when
dual-wielding.
No more installer. install.bat and uninstall.bat are gone. Install is
copying two files into a folder you make; uninstall is deleting that folder. If you
still have an uninstall.bat from an older package, delete it rather than run it —
a version from before 2026-07-20 could delete your game installation.
Tuned defaults, from headset testing: weapon size 0.97 (was 0.85) and left hand
forward offset -0.093 (was 0.120).
Quest users: use Steam Link
Testers report the best performance on Quest with Steam Link rather than Virtual
Desktop. If the image stutters or feels behind your head, change that before you
change any mod setting.
Install
- Download the ZIP below and unzip the whole folder. Do not run files from inside
the ZIP. - In Steam, open MCC's Manage > Browse local files and create a folder named
exactlyHalo_MCC_VRinside it. - Copy
halo3xr.dllandhalo3xr_launcher.exeinto that folder. - Start Steam and your OpenXR runtime, then run
halo3xr_launcher.exe.
Updating from 0.1: close MCC and copy the two new files over the old ones. Your
halomccvr.cfg is left alone. Delete any install.bat/uninstall.bat still
sitting in the folder.
Required MCC settings
Set these in MCC's own menus. The mod does not change them for you, and you can
change them with the headset on from inside the VR session.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Settings > Video > Max Frame Rate | 120 |
| Settings > Video > V-Sync | Off |
| Halo 3 > Settings > Field of View | 120 |
Do not enable FSR in MCC's video menu. Field of View 120 is a rendering
requirement, not a comfort preference: at the default FOV the engine culls geometry
outside the flat-screen view and scenery pops in and out at the edges of the
headset image.
Safety
- The launcher starts MCC through its official anti-cheat-disabled mode. Do not
use this in anti-cheat-enabled matchmaking. - No game files are patched or redistributed. Normal Steam launches stay unmodded.
- The files are unsigned, so Windows or antivirus may flag them. Do not disable your
security software globally — only allow these files if you trust the source. - To uninstall, close MCC and delete only the
Halo_MCC_VRfolder you created.

Halo MCC VR — Alpha 0.1
GRAB THE LATEST VERSION ABOVE
A native OpenXR VR mod for Halo: The Master Chief Collection (Steam).
This is an early alpha. Halo 3 campaign is the tested path. Other MCC titles, online play, custom games, Forge, every weapon, vehicles, scopes, and long sessions have not all been validated.
Alpha 0.1 was refreshed on July 20. The current download includes the protected uninstaller and a fully manual, no-script installation option. If you downloaded Alpha 0.1 earlier, discard that ZIP and download the current one below.
This code was written by AI. Every line was written by Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's Codex, directed by a human modder who is not a programmer. He made the decisions, ran the builds, and confirmed results in a headset, but no human reviewed every line. Treat it as unaudited source; the code is public so you can inspect it before running it. Licensed MIT.
Pancreations is a 3D animator and does not use generative AI artwork in their work. This mod began as a request from a friend.
What works
- True per-eye stereo and 6DOF head tracking
- Motion-controller input: snap/smooth turning, melee, grenades, and menu control
- Controller-driven weapon aim with authored per-weapon VR crosshairs and enemy-red states
- Articulated VR arms, including a free left support hand on the shotgun
- Native HUD with the centered flat-screen reticle hidden
- Six picture-quality presets, from Potato (50%) to Keith David (150%)
Required MCC settings
Set these in MCC's own menus. The mod does not change them, and you can change them with the headset on.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Settings > Video > Max Frame Rate | 120 |
| Settings > Video > V-Sync | Off |
| Halo 3 > Settings > Field of View | 120 |
Do not enable FSR in MCC's video menu; it breaks VR image scale. Use the mod's picture-quality presets instead.
FOV 120 keeps the engine from culling scenery at the edges of the headset view. V-Sync or a 60 FPS limit can make frame pacing feel poor regardless of GPU speed.
Install - choose either method
Download HaloMCCVR-alpha-0.1.zip below and unzip it first. Do not run files from inside the ZIP.
Manual install (no scripts)
- In Steam, open MCC > Manage > Browse local files.
- Inside the main Halo The Master Chief Collection folder, create a folder named exactly halo3xr.
- Copy only halo3xr.dll and halo3xr_launcher.exe from the unzipped package into that new folder.
- Start Steam and your OpenXR headset runtime, then run halo3xr_launcher.exe.
- Optional: right-click the launcher and choose Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).
The final path should be:
Halo The Master Chief Collection\halo3xr\halo3xr_launcher.exe
Do not copy the files loose into the main MCC folder. To uninstall manually, close MCC and delete only the dedicated halo3xr folder you created.
Automatic install
- Close MCC, then run install.bat from the unzipped package.
- Pick a picture quality. Low is the safest first try; the F1 menu can change it later.
- Launch with the Halo MCC VR desktop shortcut it creates.
Requires Windows 10/11 64-bit, Steam MCC with Halo 3 installed, and a working OpenXR runtime. No compiler, CMake, or Visual C++ redistributable is needed.
Safety
- Launches MCC through its official anti-cheat-disabled mode. Do not use it in anti-cheat-enabled matchmaking.
- No game files are patched or redistributed. Normal Steam launches stay unmodded.
- The files are unsigned, so Windows or antivirus may inspect them. Do not disable security software globally.
- Automatic uninstall is available from the installed halo3xr folder. The current script validates the exact folder and deletes only known mod files.
Earlier Alpha 0.1 uninstaller notice
An Alpha 0.1 ZIP available before July 20 contained an unsafe uninstaller when package files were placed loose in the main MCC folder. That download was replaced. Do not use an older copy of uninstall.bat; download the current ZIP. If affected, restore MCC with Steam's file verification. The current uninstaller is protected by path checks, an explicit file allowlist, and regression tests.

Built from commit 1c6643e. Per-file hashes are included in BUILD-INFO.txt inside the ZIP.
Reporting problems
Open an issue with what appeared in the headset, plus halo3xr_launcher.log, halo3xr.log, the ZIP's BUILD-INFO.txt, and your headset, GPU, and OpenXR runtime.
Quest Pro and additional headset/controller combinations still need playtesters and may not work out of the box.
Known bugs
- Right-stick zoom is not implemented correctly and can clip or hide the character and nearby elements.
- Some toggles in the F1/thumb-stick-click menu remain unfinished.
- Loading another Halo title currently breaks the 3D hook.
Tips
- Click both thumb sticks to open the F1 VR settings menu.
- To pause, press both face buttons on the left controller together; this enters 2D mode and returns to 3D when resumed.
- A 120 FPS game cap is recommended even if the headset runs at 72 Hz. Keep V-Sync off.
- Keep in-game FSR off. External OpenXR scaling tools may work.
- Quad-view eye tracking is supported.
- Vehicles require strong VR legs. Steering currently follows right-hand movement because the right aim stick is tied to the right hand.
- Cutscenes, vehicles, turrets, and the flamethrower remain third-person.
- The IK rig can be hidden for floating hands.
- Dual-wield bullets, projectiles, and crosshair follow the right hand.
- Two-handed weapon placement can be adjusted.
