Welcome to the GS.Asteroids Wiki

An Asteroids clone for the Apple IIgs computer

Special thanks to Jeremy Rand for his invaluable help and advice, his build pipeline, and his inspiring Centipede clone "BuGS".

GS.Asteroids uses sound code and other bits from Jeremy's BuGS project.

Keys

OPTION - rotate left

COMMAND - rotate right

ENTER - thrust

SPACE - fire / respawn / start game

H - hyperspace

Q - quit game

F - toggle between "Fast" and "Fancy" graphics

P - toggle pause

Q - quit game

Note that due to hardware limitations on the GS, you cannot fire and thrust at the same time. Thrust and fire also use the machine's key repeat settings. It's weird, I know. I will look into joystick support to try and get around this somewhat.

Hardware requirements

GS Asteroids has two graphics modes that you can toggle between:

  • "Fast" - graphics are optimized for speed and running on a stock Apple IIgs.
  • "Fancy" - enhanced graphics for machines with an accelerator card.

TODO

  • FIX CRASH ON EXIT
  • improve look of "fast mode" player ship
  • add "thrust toggle" mode (user request)
  • reduce flicker, esp in fast mode
  • add "game over" and "lives" indicator to fast mode
  • hit test player against saucers
  • hit test player missiles against saucers
  • add small saucers
  • Base small/large saucer selection on score, etc
  • have saucers aim at player
  • when respawning level, add another asteroid
  • extra lives
  • game over when ships are gone
  • general difficulty ramp up as score goes up
  • num ships display
  • attract mode
  • allow quitting program
  • add hyperspace
  • sound
  • add intro screen

FUTURE

  • joystick support
  • application icon
  • pause/unpause looped sounds when game is paused
  • move remaining C code into ASM
  • generate a random number lookup table
  • color/B&W toggle?
  • high scores
