Einstein now supports ATA PC-Card images

To use those in NewtonOS, you must install Paul Guyot's ATA Driver first:

In the Einstein Setting panel are new menus for integrating and creating ATA images into the Newton PCMCIA card list. You can create new cards of various sizes, and you can also mount existing ATA Card images. To do that, you need to take your card out of the Newton and put it into a PC Card or CF Card reader. Dump the entire card as a binary image (Einstein supports up to 128MB cards) onto your PC. Make sure that the filename of the image that you create ends with the letters ".ata" . Now you can use the Settings dialog to att that ATA image to your list.

The Einstein driver should connect Paul's ATA Software to the image file. You have full read and write access to the card image.

The reverse is true as well. If you mount the ATA image file in Einstein, and write data to it, the image will stay compatible. You can use the same PC Card reader to write the image back to the physical card, and the use the card in your MP2x00.

Using ATA Card Images

Add a card image

  • download the ATA Driver from Paul Guyot and install it on your Einstein Newton
  • if you have an existing ATA card image:
    • take the disk image of your ATA card and store it somewhere where you store other Einstein resources. Make sure the file name end in ".ata"
    • open Einstein. Go to Settings. In the PC Cards tab, click on [+]
    • in the [+] pulldown menu, the first entry is "Add existing image...". Choose your ATA image file and it will be added to the list of known cards
  • if you want to create a new ATA image:
    • open Einstein. Go to Settings. In the PC Cards tab, click on [+]
    • in the [+] pulldown menu, choose one of the "New ATA Card" menu items. This will open a file chooser dialog. Just save the new image in a convenient location
  • save your settings (bottom right of the Settings dialog window)

Used a card image

  • make sure that Paul's ATA driver is installed
  • to insert the image into a running Newton emulation, go to main menu: "Platform" -> "PCCard Slot 0" -> Choose your card from the list
  • a dialog box should pop up that gives you the detail on the card that you inserted
  • you can now use the ATA card image just like on a physical MP2x00 device
