Insert a disc and wait for identification. Play becomes active only after mounting, platform detection, runtime/firmware checks, and virtual-cart setup.
- PS1 original/backup CD: raw 2,352-byte sector streaming with track-aware CUE
- PS2 CD/DVD: BOOT2 detection, PCSX2 physical-drive mode, or internal rip
- GameCube/Wii backup/data disc: Dolphin when the PC drive can read it
- Dreamcast backup CDI/GDI/MIL-CD layouts
- Strongly identified Sega CD, Saturn, and PC Engine CD backups
- DVD movies, audio CDs, and data discs containing recognizable loose ROMs
Most ordinary PC DVD drives cannot read original Nintendo GameCube/Wii discs or
Dreamcast GD-ROMs. PS1 needs scph5501.bin; PS2 and several Sega/PC Engine
systems need their matching firmware.
Optical spin-up can take tens of seconds. Re-inserting an identified title reuses its stable save ID. When burning, wait for Finalized/Ejected before removing media. Dual-layer discs work only when both the writer and selected content support them.
