Summary

  • The prisma-client generator inferred moduleFormat by checking whether tsconfig.json's compilerOptions.module was literally "commonjs", treating anything else (including "nodenext"/"node16") as ESM.
  • Under nodenext/node16, TypeScript actually decides CJS vs ESM per file based on the nearest package.json's "type" field, not the module setting alone. A CJS project (no "type": "module") using nodenext therefore got an ESM-only client containing import.meta.url, which crashes at runtime once require()'d (ReferenceError: exports is not defined in ES module scope).
  • This PR makes inferModuleFormat mirror tsc's own resolution for nodenext/node16: look up the nearest package.json to the generator's output directory and infer "esm" only when its "type" field is "module", defaulting to "cjs" otherwise (including when no package.json is found). Other module settings (commonjs, esnext, etc.) are unaffected.

Test plan

  • Added packages/client-generator-ts/tests/module-format.test.ts — unit tests covering commonjs/esnext unconditional behavior, node16/nodenext (with casing variants) against package.json with type: module, type: commonjs, no type field, and no package.json found, plus the pre-existing extension-based fallback.
  • pnpm run build in packages/client-generator-ts — clean, no type errors.
  • Full package test suite (50 tests, including generator.test.ts) passes with no regressions.
  • Manually reproduced the exact bug report: CJS project (no "type" field) + tsconfig.json with module: nodenext + no explicit moduleFormat → generated client now has no import.meta.url, compiles cleanly with tsc, and runs under node without crashing.
  • Verified no regression for genuine ESM projects: "type": "module" + module: nodenext → generated client still correctly gets import.meta.url and runs under Node's ESM loader.

The prisma-client generator treated any tsconfig `module` value other than
"commonjs" as ESM, including "nodenext"/"node16". Under those modes,
TypeScript decides CJS vs ESM per-file based on the nearest package.json's
"type" field, so a CJS project (no "type": "module") using nodenext would
get an ESM-only client containing `import.meta.url`, which crashes at
runtime once required from CommonJS.

Now, for nodenext/node16, we look up the nearest package.json to the output
directory and only infer "esm" when its "type" field is "module",
defaulting to "cjs" otherwise (including when no package.json is found).

This release introduces `@prisma/prisma7`, a compatibility package that lets you retain a matching Prisma 7 CLI and configuration while installing Prisma 8 in the same project.

Once 7.10.0 is released, a side-by-side installation can use:

Use `prisma` for the directly installed Prisma 8 CLI and `prisma7` for Prisma 7:

Prisma 7 now prefers version-specific configuration files, allowing its configuration to coexist with Prisma 8's `prisma.config.*` files:

Without an explicit `--config` option, Prisma 7 searches for:

1. Root-level `prisma7.config.*` files.
2. `.config/prisma7.*` files.
3. Existing `prisma.config.*` files as a backwards-compatible fallback.

The supported extensions are `.js`, `.ts`, `.mjs`, `.cjs`, `.mts`, and `.cts`. An explicit config path always takes precedence:

New projects initialized by the Prisma 7 CLI use `prisma7.config.ts`. Existing projects containing only `prisma.config.*` continue to work without migration or additional warnings. If a `prisma7.config.*` file exists but cannot be loaded, Prisma reports the error rather than silently falling back to another configuration.

The `prisma7` identity is carried through CLI help, version output, shell completion, initialization, migration, database, and generation guidance. Stable Prisma concepts such as `schema.prisma`, Prisma Migrate, `@prisma/client`, and `PRISMA_*` environment variables remain unchanged.

Together, the separate executable and configuration namespace make it possible to operate Prisma 7 and Prisma 8 side by side without command or config-file collisions.

##### Prisma Studio security hardening

Prisma Studio's local HTTP server now:

- Binds explicitly to `127.0.0.1` instead of all network interfaces.
- Rejects browser requests from origins other than the active `localhost` or `127.0.0.1` Studio URL.
- No longer returns wildcard CORS headers.
- Applies the same protections across Node.js, Bun, and Deno.

This prevents network clients or malicious websites from accessing Studio's database endpoints while Studio is running.
