Installation
Use a stable release for an installation. The wiki helps you find the correct guide; exact instructions remain in the repository so they can be reviewed with the corresponding application version.

Download the Windows-x64-Setup.exe asset from the latest stable release on the computer or VM where ALPR will run. Setup provides fresh installation, verified backup import, retained-data recovery and in-place update options. It installs the required components and automatic services; Docker and WSL are not required.
The Windows guide explains the exact Setup choices, initial password, first login, local-network access, backups and future UI updates. For service, architecture or recovery details, use Native Windows maintenance.
From v0.1.54, fresh installs and migrations let you select the application and database ports in Setup. If the original Docker application uses port 3000, choose an unused native application port such as 3001. Windows installs a separate PostgreSQL 17 cluster; it does not replace the original Docker database. Later application-port changes are available in Settings → General → Windows connection ports, with automatic restart and a link to the new address. Update Blue Iris's destination port after changing it. See the Windows port and migration guidance.
From v0.1.55, the same General card also provides Local PostgreSQL port. Changing it coordinates PostgreSQL and ALPR restarts while keeping your browser address, Blue Iris URLs, credentials, records and images. The database remains local. Failed or interrupted changes restore the original configuration, and later updates, software rollback and retained-data reinstall preserve the selected port. Restart Windows once after updating from an older release if the control asks for activation.
Follow the README quick start and Linux installation guide. The verified bootstrap installs supported prerequisites and runs the guided installer. Review the explicit host compatibility matrix first.
From v0.1.53, successful fresh Linux installations and activated migration targets set up the restricted Software Updates helper automatically on systemd hosts, including startup after reboot and a verified heartbeat. Matching existing helpers are preserved. If setup needs attention, ALPR stays installed and prints the manual recovery command. See Linux browser updates.
Open Help in ALPR for the searchable User Guide and its downloadable PDF. Settings → Release identifies the running version. Configure cameras and integrations deliberately, and review Settings → Software Updates for later stable releases. The latest release also provides the standalone User Guide PDF.
For an older version, open its release page, select the tag and use that tag's docs directory. Avoid applying instructions from moving main to an unrelated older installation.
Detailed guides are versioned in the Community repository. For the exact installed version, use its release tag. Public reports must exclude credentials, private plate data and imagery.
