Potential bugs: outdated code used in new websockets implementation

I was excited to use the new websocket code and am in the progress of migrating from httpx + httpx-ws. I was surprised to find that I immediately ran into a bug, since I knew that the new websockets implementation is based on httpx-ws. However, upon investigation it seems that the httpx-ws code used is actually pretty old, despite #1042 stating that "The vendor commit merges httpx-ws's complete history." In reality the newest commit used is frankie567/httpx-ws@6bc568b, meaning we're missing several years of changes and bugfixes (70+ commits)!

My first question is whether this was a mistake, and if not, what the reasoning behind starting from the older code was?

As for the actual bug, I'm running into issues similar to frankie567/httpx-ws#29 and frankie567/httpx-ws#107. However given that the code is old it seems like there may be other issues present inherited from the old code. @Kludex interested in your thoughts on this.

Gotcha. I'm willing to take a look at a diff and contribute a PR to reapply some of the changes. Alternatively you could try to preserve commit history still but that might require some git wizardry.
