Coming from 1.x

LinkUnbound 2.0 is a rewrite: a new picker, a new settings window, rules by app, and its own format for rules and preferences. It doesn't promise to carry over everything from 1.x. It starts from what it can read and keeps the rest out of the way, so you can always go back.

Windows

Remove 1.x first. If both are installed, they fight over the same registration. The 2.0 installer offers to remove a standalone 1.x when it finds one. A 1.x installed from the Microsoft Store has to be uninstalled by hand (Settings › Apps).

What's carried over. From a standalone 1.x install, 2.0 reads your rules and browsers where they are, in %LOCALAPPDATA%\LinkUnbound\. Before writing its own format, it keeps a copy of the originals as rules.1x.json and browsers.1x.json.

A Store copy of 1.x kept its files inside its package, and those aren't read: you'll start with no rules.

Going back to 1.x. Uninstall 2.0, copy rules.1x.json over rules.json and browsers.1x.json over browsers.json, and install 1.x again.

macOS

2.0 has a new bundle identifier (dev.rgdevment.linkunbound; 1.x was com.rgdevment.linkunbound), so macOS sees them as two different applications. Nothing from 1.x is read.

1. Quit 1.x and remove it. If 2.0 notices that 1.x is still installed, Settings › Links offers Remove the older version, which moves it to the Trash.
2. Open 2.0's settings and set LinkUnbound as the default browser again (Links › Set).
3. If an old entry is left in System Settings › General › Login Items, remove it.

Leftovers you can delete

• navigate.log and startup_crash.log in the data folder: 1.x wrote them, 2.x never reads them.
• %APPDATA%\LinkUnbound\ on Windows, from very old versions.
• On a Mac, ~/Library/Preferences/com.rgdevment.linkunbound.plist.

The 1.x line

1.x lives on the v1-stable branch of the repository, frozen at 1.4.x: it only gets security and crash fixes. New features land on 2.x.
