Experimental Stage 1 test candidate — 2026-10-04

Choose a tag to compare

@ricperry ricperry released this 04 Oct 20:26

Experimental Stage 1 test candidate for Debian 13 x86_64 and Fedora 44. Not production acceptance. GUI/FUSE launch, Fedora desktop import/export/save/reopen, and clean-Debian runtime workflows have not yet been verified. This prerelease is not marked latest and does not replace or modify v0.2.0.

The pinned Debian build completed, and both the final AppDir and actual extracted AppImage passed the audit: 119 ELF files, zero errors, maximum GLIBC requirement 2.39 against the proposed 2.41 ceiling. The pinned outer runtime and Debian relocation checks passed. Extracted files and symlinks match the audited AppDir. All 13 packaging tests passed. These checks do not certify clean-machine runtime compatibility.

Downloads and testing

  • Chromiator-0.2.0-x86_64.AppImage: the verified candidate, 28,228,088 bytes.
  • Chromiator-stage1-test-kit-20261004.tar.gz: candidate plus fixtures, test instructions, exact application source inputs, patches, dependency/audit reports, and provenance, 29,998,606 bytes.
  • SHA256SUMS: checksums for both downloads.

Download the test kit and follow chromiator-stage1/TESTING.txt on each machine. It separates ordinary FUSE launch from extracted AppRun, then specifies welcome → import → export → save/reopen and exact decoded-pixel/source-byte comparisons. Verify the asset checksums before running:

sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS --ignore-missing
tar -xzf Chromiator-stage1-test-kit-20261004.tar.gz
cd chromiator-stage1
sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS

Runtime prerequisites are x86_64 Linux with glibc 2.41+, a working desktop/session D-Bus, fonts/font configuration, and host graphics drivers/API loaders. FUSE support is needed only for normal AppImage mounting. No Rust compiler or GTK development packages are needed to run the kit. The included instructions and lock record further prerequisites and outstanding checks.

Exact build provenance

The release tag points to source checkpoint da9e79ed2eecfc372e47e418bb992c22de7446c2, containing the packaging fix, its regression, and verification documentation.

The candidate was built before that commit; it is not a clean-tag rebuild. Its inputs were base 425760cd51ad868b2a6c06c48885e3958d22c476, the included packaging fix, and a pre-existing local packaging-icon edit. Source-file hashes confirm that the icon is the only build-input difference from the release checkpoint. The test kit contains the exact source snapshot, packaging-fix.patch, local-icon.patch, and PROVENANCE.json. GitHub's automatically generated source archive contains the tagged commit; use the test kit's snapshot/patches to recover the exact candidate inputs.

The raw host build log is omitted from the public kit, and tar ownership/timestamp metadata is normalized. Source-file contents and AppImage bytes are unchanged. No private configuration, caches, or unrelated user artwork is included. Rendering, blending, presets, and saved-format semantics are unchanged.

The candidate remains experimental. Stage 1 runtime acceptance is pending; no PR merge or main-branch update is part of this test publication.

Chromiator 0.2.0 - Linux preview

Artist-directed perceptual color-space partitioning and remapping, built with
native GTK4. This is pre-alpha software; keep backups of artwork and projects.
Saved-project and preset formats are not yet guaranteed stable.

Downloads

  • AppImage (x86_64): make executable and run. Built on Fedora 44; compatibility
with older distributions is not established. GTK is bundled; graphics drivers
and core system libraries remain host dependencies.
  • Flatpak (x86_64): install with flatpak install --user ./Chromiator-0.2.0-x86_64.flatpak,
then run flatpak run io.github.chromiator.Chromiator. Requires GNOME runtime 50.
Flatpak stores personal presets separately from the native application.
  • Source archive: exact checkpoint plus vendored Rust dependencies and Cargo
configuration for offline dependency resolution. Native GTK development tools
are still needed to compile it.
  • Third-party notices: accompanying Fedora library/resource notices for the
AppImage. Both application bundles also contain the project's license notices.
  • Verify downloads with the accompanying SHA256SUMS.

Highlights

  • Independent Source/Target sites, perceptual matching, smooth color transitions.
  • Nineteen built-in presets, including edited and newly supplied artist presets.
  • GTK4 color picker, accessible site controls, and a case-insensitive project chooser.
  • Revised user guide, dependency attribution, and GPL-3.0-or-later licensing.

Verification and limits

Built from source checkpoint 7f7f7353ff315c73636e5e3afc7a82ac9e7a37be.
The source passed 106 regular tests and strict Clippy. Each Linux package passed
six scripted native GTK scenarios in private Sway (shell, Voronoi, presets,
picker, I/O cancellation, responsive layout), with no reported warnings or panics.
The GTK project-filter regression also passed before packaging.

These are bounded smoke tests, not a clean-system compatibility matrix or full
portal save/export verification. AppImage screenshot rendering was inspected;
the private AT-SPI discovery helper timed out for that package, so packaged
assistive-technology support is not certified. Windows and macOS packages are
not included in this release.
