NetherSX2 BIOS Troubleshooting
When launching PlayStation 2 games through Argosy using NetherSX2, some games may boot with the wrong language, fail to start, or crash. This is usually caused by a BIOS region mismatch.
The PlayStation 2 BIOS is region-specific firmware. Using the wrong region BIOS can cause compatibility issues.
| BIOS Region | Game Serial Prefix | Region |
|---|---|---|
| NTSC-U | SLUS, SCUS | North America |
| NTSC-J | SLPS, SCPS, SLPM | Japan |
| PAL | SLES, SCES | Europe, Australia |
Tip: You can identify a game's region from its serial number, usually visible in the filename or game metadata.
Fast Boot skips the BIOS startup sequence, which eliminates region issues for most games.
- Open NetherSX2 directly
- Go to Settings > System
- Enable Fast Boot
This works for approximately 95% of games.
Some games require the full BIOS startup sequence. For these games, configure them directly in NetherSX2:
- Open NetherSX2 directly (not through Argosy)
- Find the game in the game list
- Long-press the game
- Tap Game Properties > Game Settings
- Adjust BIOS or boot settings as needed
Once configured, launching the game through Argosy will use your saved settings.
If most of your games are from one region, set that as your default:
- Open NetherSX2 > Settings > BIOS
- Select a BIOS matching your primary game region
Recommendation: NTSC-U (USA) BIOS offers the broadest compatibility for mixed libraries.
- Games with language selection at startup
- Some Japanese exclusives
- Certain region-locked titles
If a game doesn't work with Fast Boot enabled, try configuring it with Solution 2.
NetherSX2 uses the BIOS configured in its own settings. Argosy launches games but cannot override NetherSX2's BIOS selection.
The game is reading the language from your BIOS settings. Configure that specific game in NetherSX2 (Solution 2) to use a BIOS matching the game's region.
- NTSC-U (USA) - Best for mixed libraries or primarily North American games
- PAL (Europe) - If your library is primarily European
- NTSC-J (Japan) - For Japanese-exclusive titles
- Verify your BIOS file is valid and not corrupted
- Try disabling Fast Boot for that specific game
- Check if the game has known compatibility issues on the NetherSX2 compatibility list
