OSM Relatify

OSM Relatify is a web editor for mapping public transport routes (bus and tram) in OpenStreetMap. It downloads a relation - or a patch of map to start a new one - lets you click the ways the route follows, and uploads a clean changeset when you're done.

Application preview

This wiki documents this fork (ryan-bush/osm-relatify), which adds several things on top of the original project by Kamil Monicz: tag editing, custom changeset comments, U-turns without a turning circle, creating relations from scratch, and NaPTAN integration for Great Britain.

The upstream wiki documents the original tool and still applies to everything the two share — loading a relation, clicking ways to build the route, setting stop roles, and uploading. The pages here cover only what this fork adds on top of that.

Pages in this wiki

  • NaPTAN - how the NaPTAN download works, suggesting and adding missing stops, filling in tags on stops already in OSM, and resolving disagreements between NaPTAN and OSM.
  • Stop Location & Area - adding the stop_position node where the bus actually halts, and grouping a stop's platforms and positions into a stop_area relation.
  • Editing Relation Tags - changing a route's tags without leaving the editor.
  • U-Turns Without a Turning Circle - letting the router turn a bus around somewhere OSM doesn't tag as a turning circle.
  • New Relations - building a route relation from scratch instead of editing an existing one.
  • Route Masters - creating and editing route masters
  • Overpass - what Overpass is used for, its limitations, configuring fallback mirrors, and the errors it can produce and how to fix them.

Running it locally

There is no hosted instance yet. See the README for how to set one up — you'll need an OSM OAuth2 application and Python 3.13 with uv.

Supported routes

Only bus, trolleybus and tram relations tagged public_transport:version=2 are supported, on one-way roads, roundabouts, and either side of the road. See the README for the full feature list.
