Conker's Bad Fur Day: Recompiled V0.1.6
Almost everything in it started as a report, a request or a test from someone playing. Thank you all, credits are at the bottom. 🐿️
New
- Save states. F5 saves the game exactly as it is, anywhere. F7 loads it back, and F6 picks one of nine slots. States made by an earlier version usually still load, and they never touch the game's own save. More in
docs/save-states.md. (#94) - Achievements. 37 of the program's own, from your first death to the end of the game, plus one for reaching every scene. They're in the new Achievements settings tab and kept on your computer, with no account needed. Only what you do while playing counts. A save that's already further along unlocks them again as a new game reaches each scene, and loading a save state earns nothing.
- Reticle. A green aiming ring like Live & Reloaded's. (#74)
- Overscan Borders. Hides the N64's black border down each side of the picture, without stretching it. (#72)
- Swap Sticks plays like a shooter. A real strafe, the shotgun's laser on R, and Lock-On can be turned off. (#84)
- Conker's Detail. Keeps Conker on his most detailed model, so he no longer swaps models as he moves.
- The Russian fan translation plays. Load it with Add ROM, and it shows as Version: US Russian.
- Settings reorganised. The tabs scroll, Camera and Mouse & Gyro have their own tabs, and Texture Pack has moved to Graphics.
Fixed
Crashes
- Returning to the starting area after the horror chapter no longer crashes, and Windy no longer stops when the game runs out of memory. Busy scenes were overrunning the frame's drawing lists. (#98)
- The smoke over Windy's beehive no longer crashes the game.
- Connecting a controller while playing no longer crashes on macOS. (#88)
- Mods no longer stop the game on macOS. (#81)
Camera and aiming
- Free camera: looking up raises the view once the camera is low, and it stays steady at walls and the floor. (#70)
- In the bank's slow-motion leaps, the mouse moves the crosshair. (#85)
Graphics
- Windy's tickly bees no longer vanish beside the old 4:3 area in widescreen, and the sunflower is no longer drawn over bees in front of it. (#101)
- Split screen: every player's view draws its own level, not just the last player's. In widescreen, every view is widened the same way, with characters and HUD centred. (#78)
- Shadows: no dark patch for a frame when walking into a room, no dark line following Conker, and no growing between frames. (#73, #75, #76)
- Conker no longer snaps between poses while moving. (#76)
- Drunk Conker's blurry vision is back. (#77)
- Steam Deck: the left 4:3 bar shows correctly. (#82)
- Light glows, like the lamps over the Feral Reserve's doors, stay visible past the old 4:3 edges.
Other
- RetroAchievements is removed, since it doesn't accept recompilations. The program's own achievements take its place.
Known issues
- Rock Solid with modded-audio ROMs: the sliding rock cutscene can get stuck on some ROM hacks. A fix is ready and waiting on a test. (#79)
- Cutscene dialogue is sometimes missing. It's intermittent and hard to reproduce, so if it happens to you, please say where in #99.
Thank you
Every one of these came from someone taking the time to report, describe, record or test:
- @IceBaronTwinAcc played through the whole game and reported as they went:
- @urbangangsta101 asked for save states (#94) and tried every test build on Linux and the Steam Deck until they were solid. They also suggested the Swap Sticks improvements (#84) and rounded up a list of V0.1.5 bugs (#82).
- @KohlsAdrian tracked down two macOS crashes: mods (#81) and connecting a controller mid-game (#88). They also started the Hollywood Subtitles mod, which is coming along in #108.
- @huguitocloud helped narrow down the macOS mod crash (#81) and the V0.1.5 bugs (#82). They also found the exact ROM bytes behind the Rock Solid softlock (#79).
- @jxlanda reported the black line following Conker (#73) and the dark flickering shadow (#75), and helped with the free camera (#70).
- @drencoss reported the free camera's problems (#70).
- @fizzlepicklepop asked for the reticle (#74) and the overscan option (#72).
- @Urshak84 and @Rukario reported and helped pin down Conker's stuttery animation (#76).
- @Atrus99 noticed the drunk vision was gone (#77).
- @fufiplayyy, @blackpath92-code and @dankor66 reported and tested split screen (#78).
- @Shurrick asked for the Russian translation.
- @nitrostemp for the macOS port.
- DevOldSchool for the decomp, which keeps making the game easier to understand.
If something's still not right, please open an issue: that's how most of this list came about. Thanks again, everyone.
