Organising knots

The Knots list

The Knots tab lists your knots, newest first, each with its time, place, text preview and any photos, videos or voice recordings. Tap a knot to open its page, where you can play media, transcribe voice, edit, share, check off or delete it.

Across the top of the list: 🔍 (search), 🎲 Random and Select (for sharing several knots; see Sharing).

While Google Drive is connected, a knot that isn't in Drive yet carries a small badge, and a knot edited on two devices carries a conflict badge. Both are explained in Cloud backup.

Search

Tap 🔍 next to the title to open the search field; the keyboard opens at once. Type to filter the list.

  • What it searches: the knot's text items, voice-recording transcripts (including older whole-knot transcripts) and its place (a resolved address or a manual label).
  • How it matches: it ignores case and accents, every word you type must match somewhere in the knot (in any order), and it isn't fuzzy.
  • Checked-off knots are included in results (faded), even if they're hidden from the normal list.
  • The list shows "N knots match" or "No knots match" your query, with the matching words highlighted in the preview.
  • ✕ (or Escape) clears the search and closes the field. While a query is active the field stays open and the 🔍 icon is highlighted.
  • Search stays usable in Select mode, so you can select and share the results.

Search is held in memory only: it isn't saved, and it is cleared when you close the app.

Calendar

The Calendar tab shows a month grid. Days that have knots are marked, with a count when there are several. Tap a day to list its knots below the grid ("Knots on …"); each row shows the time, the text, and a small thumbnail per kind of media on the right:

  • a photo thumbnail (the first photo of the day's knot),
  • a video thumbnail with a ▶ mark,
  • a ▶ tile for a voice recording,

with a number when a knot has several of one kind. Knots with only text show no thumbnails. Thumbnails make knots without text easy to recognise. Checked-off knots appear faded.

Search on the Calendar

The Calendar uses the same search as the Knots list: one query, shared by both screens, with a 🔍 at the right of the title.

  • Days with a matching knot are highlighted; other days with knots are dimmed.
  • An info line says "N matches on M days", and ‹ › jump to the previous or next matching day, across months.
  • Tapping a matching day lists only that day's matching knots, with the matching words highlighted.

Checking off a knot

When you've dealt with a knot, check it off. It isn't the same as deleting it.

  • Each entry in the Knots list has a check-off button (✓, or ↩ once checked off). The knot's page has the same tick beside the timestamp, and a green ✓ Checked off · date and time pill while it's checked off (shown in your Settings time zone and format).
  • You get a Checked off · Undo (or Unchecked · Undo) toast, so a slip of the thumb is easy to reverse.
  • A checked-off knot stays in the Knots list, faded and struck through, until the next New day starts at time. The default is 03:00; change it in Settings → Date & Time. It is evaluated in the time zone you chose there. A knot checked off at 01:00 leaves the list at 03:00 that morning; one checked off at 23:00 leaves it at 03:00 the next day.
  • After that it is hidden from the Knots list only. It stays in the Calendar (faded) and on its page, where you can uncheck it. A Show N checked-off knots button at the top of the list brings the hidden ones back (and Hide checked-off knots tucks them away again). The list updates by itself when a cutoff passes while it's open. If every knot is checked off you'll see "All your knots are checked off."
  • Checking off is not an edit: it doesn't change the knot's content, so it never causes an "edited on two devices" prompt and never re-uploads the knot's photos or recordings. It syncs to your other devices on its own, and it never restores a backup you deleted.
  • In Manage backups, a checked-off knot's backup carries a Checked off badge, so you can see which backups are safe to delete (Cloud backup).

Random knot

Not sure which knot to deal with next? Tap 🎲 Random (next to Select) to open a random knot that isn't checked off, even if the list is currently hiding checked-off ones. On that page, 🎲 Another random knot draws a different one (never the one you're looking at).

If nothing is left you'll see "No unchecked knots yet", or "This is your only unchecked knot" when only the current one remains. Random is hidden while you're selecting knots to share, and Another random knot is hidden while you're editing.

Editing and deleting

On a knot's page: Edit changes its text, media and location label; a knot must keep at least one item. Delete removes the knot from this device only. Its cloud backup, if any, is kept, and your other devices keep their copies (Cloud backup explains the difference from deleting a backup).
