PaperOtter v1.0.1
What's new in 1.0.1
A bug-fix release. If 1.0.0 works for you, nothing changes except the two fixes below.
- Linux AppImage now starts in sandboxes. In 1.0.0 one file inside the AppImage could only be run by its owner, so starting PaperOtter inside firejail, or anything else that runs it as a different user, closed it immediately with
AppRun.wrapped: Permission denied. Every file inside is now runnable, and the release pipeline checks this before publishing. - Compress gives the right reason for protected PDFs. Many published PDFs (annual reports, statements) open without a password but are protected against changes. Compress still leaves them alone, since compressing would strip that protection, but it now says so instead of claiming the file is password-protected. Translated into all nine languages. (#8)

Mac users: PaperOtter has no Apple developer certificate, so macOS stops the first open. Which way it stops you depends on your Mac:
- "Apple could not verify PaperOtter is free of malware" — click Done, then open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to Security, and click Open Anyway next to PaperOtter. Do it within an hour or the button expires. Open the app again and click Open Anyway in the dialog.
- "PaperOtter is damaged and can't be opened" — there is no Open Anyway for this one. Drag the app into Applications, then run this in Terminal:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/PaperOtter.appThen open PaperOtter normally. Neither message means anything is wrong with the app.
What that command does:
xattredits extended attributes, the small labels macOS attaches to files.-d com.apple.quarantinedeletes one named label — the "this came from the internet" tag.-rapplies it through the bundle, because an app is a folder. The path is the only thing it touches. What it does not do: there is no
sudo, so it needs no admin rights. It does not turn Gatekeeper off and it does not affect any other app — every other download on your Mac stays checked exactly as before. Runxattr /Applications/PaperOtter.appbefore and after if you would rather check than trust.
Windows users: If you see "Windows protected your PC" (a SmartScreen warning), click More info, then Run anyway. This happens because the app is not yet signed with a Windows code-signing certificate: it is safe to use.
Note: Ebook conversion (EPUB, MOBI) requires Calibre: most users won't need this.
Verifying your download
SHA256SUMS.txt in the Assets below lists the SHA-256 of every file
in this release. To check the one you downloaded:
shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS.txt --ignore-missing
On Linux the command is sha256sum instead of shasum -a 256.
This proves the file arrived intact and unaltered in transit. It is
not a signature: it says nothing about who built the file, only that
the bytes match what this release published.
What are the Assets below?
The Assets section below is GitHub's automatic list of the same installer files from the table above. You don't need to use it: the download links in the table are the same files. The Source code entries are the raw project code and are only useful for developers.
