macOS update notice, October 21

Minutes 0.30.8 is now available and fixes the macOS restart crash after updates or permission changes. If you saw “Minutes quit unexpectedly” after updating, try reopening Minutes first: the update may already have installed. If it will not open, use the latest installer or follow the reinstallation steps; replacing the app keeps your meeting files and settings.

Minutes 0.30.7 makes the audio source an explicit choice before a meeting starts and keeps your selected speech models during setup and background repair.

What changed

  • Choose Microphone only for a room meeting or Microphone + system audio for a computer call. Minutes remembers the choice, including for tray and shortcut starts. Call detection is optional.
  • Two-source desktop capture stops with an error if it cannot start. It no longer silently falls back to microphone-only capture. Memos keep using the microphone.
  • The selected microphone stays consistent across native call capture and loopback configurations. The recording-consent dialog preserves the requested route.
  • When Sherpa processes a meeting in chunks, it now keeps one model loaded for that meeting instead of reloading it for each chunk.
  • Linux prebuilt assets were rebuilt from the unchanged release tag on Ubuntu 24.04 and checked for glibc 2.39 compatibility, including Sherpa shared-library loading.
  • The MCP server updates its runtime dependencies and bounds tool-input validation and local HTTP request sizes.
  • Background model installation and plain minutes setup preserve your selected model and engine. minutes setup --model base --download-only installs a model without selecting it.
  • Desktop onboarding recommends Small for meetings, offers Base for lower resource use, and keeps Tiny available as an explicit advanced choice. Missing companion models are reported before saving a new selection.

Sherpa model reuse: #1185. Capture: #286. Model selection: #1177, #1180.

Who should care

Anyone recording computer calls, especially through headphones or without a call-detection banner; people using MCP model installation; and anyone setting up Minutes or choosing a specific speech model.

CLI / MCP / desktop impact

Desktop Meeting recordings gain a persistent audio choice. Native desktop call capture requires macOS 15+, Microphone access and Screen Recording access. Other apps' sounds may be included in system audio. On other supported setups, two-source recording needs separate microphone and system-audio routes.

The Linux prebuilt CLI requires glibc 2.39+ and the ALSA/PipeWire runtime libraries; older distributions should build from source.

The CLI adds setup --download-only. MCP asset repair uses that install-only path and reports upgrade guidance when the installed CLI is too old. No public MCP tools are added. The audio setup guide now documents both recording.capture_backend = "core-audio-tap" and recording.sources.call = "auto" for CLI Process Tap capture on macOS 14.4+.

Breaking changes or migration notes

An unconfigured desktop Meeting start now asks you to choose the audio source. Existing explicit call-source configurations are retained. The desktop choice does not rewrite CLI backend/source preferences, and microphone-only sessions do not remove saved call routing.

The local MCP HTTP endpoint now rejects request bodies larger than 1 MiB. Tool input validation is limited to 10,000 elements; pass audio by file path rather than embedding it in a request. See #1187.

Stored meetings need no migration. Existing model choices are retained, including Tiny. Dictation and Live selections remain independent of the meeting model.

Known issues

This patch does not resolve the overlapping-speaker transcription report #1176 or mixed summary languages under automatic language selection #1179. Windows desktop remains experimental and unsigned.

Thank you to @astro-roro for the detailed capture and model-selection reports, and to the earlier reporters in #286 who helped establish the failure pattern.

Install or update

After updating the desktop app, reopen Recall so its terminal uses the matching bundled CLI.

  • macOS desktop: download the DMG below, or run brew update followed by brew upgrade --cask silverstein/tap/minutes.
  • Command line: cargo install minutes-cli --version 0.30.7, or brew upgrade silverstein/tap/minutes for an existing Homebrew install.
  • MCP server: npx minutes-mcp@0.30.7 with the updated local Minutes engine, or install the updated desktop extension below.

Minutes remains free and open source. Meeting capture and transcription run locally. Optional cloud AI and connected assistants receive the content you authorize under their settings; file sync and backups you configure are separate.
