gl3w: failed to initialize when running 'make run'

I do happen to be using a debian system and installed prerequisite package listed in the README, but I not know anything else on how to circumvent this.

Could it be a graphics board not supported issue?
How to check?

It's likely your video hardware doesn't support OpenGL 3.3. The good
news is that if you're running Debain Jessie (currently stable), you
have Mesa 10.3.2, which includes a full, optimized OpenGL 3.3 software
pipeline. That means you can use OpenGL 3.3 no matter what GPU you have
installed. You probably just need to force software rendering, which can
be done by setting an environment variable.

LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 make run

If you're using Wheezy (oldstable), this won't work because it only has
Mesa 8. You'll need to upgrade either your OS or your hardware.

If you want to check your GPUs specific capabilities, run glxinfo. Look
for "OpenGL version string."

It is really enlightening.

I tried
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1
and then tried make run, and still the same thing happens.
(And yes I am running my antique 32 bit machine on Jessie and mesa version was 10.3.2)

I have figured at this point I have an antique machine so I will gladly take "just get a better machine!" as an answer.

But I would be happy if I can understand where is the point of failure for learning sake.
