Killer Instinct Accessibility Mod v0.2.0
Pre-release
Pre-release
Second test build of the Killer Instinct Accessibility Mod (Steam version, free base game and Anniversary Edition). This build adds narration for the Shadow Lords mode.
New in this version
- Shadow Lords: the hub (day, currencies, the focused tab with its notification count), the War Room (turn, record, each mission with name, region, difficulty and turns remaining; Ctrl+Shift+D reads the briefing and rewards), the loadout popup (fighter slot with consumable and guardian sub-slots, fighter picker, launch button), the versus screen with every line of the pre-fight dialogue spoken with the speaker's name, match rewards, the Emporium (tabs and the focused pack, item or recipe with its price or crafting state), the Barracks (fighter in the centre as the roster rotates), the Spirit Lair (guardian types and how many you own), encounter popups with their choices, turn changes and the tutorial's guided prompts.
- Popups that the game repopulates every frame (the tutorial's fighting lessons) are spoken once instead of dozens of times.
- Popup button names follow your keyboard binds: the key shown in the popup's own legend is announced ("Tab: Skip Lesson").
- Attack placeholders in popup text are spoken as the attack name ("light punch") instead of an internal token.
- Popups and screens whose text contains apostrophes or line breaks are read in full now, buttons included.
Install
Unzip and copy dinput8.dll and the kiaccess folder next to KILLERINSTINCTX64_R.EXE in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Killer Instinct\. Run your screen reader (tested with NVDA) and launch the game from Steam. Upgrading from v0.1.0: overwrite the same files. To uninstall, delete dinput8.dll.
Known issues
- Shadow Lords: the cards of an opened pack, the Emporium's purchase and crafting popups, the Barracks artifact list, the Spirit Lair detail and recharge popups, the Archives, the leaderboard and the daily rewards panel are not read yet. Cinematic subtitles are not spoken (the cinematics are voiced).
- The first Shadow Lords run is a three-turn tutorial that cannot be left early; Enter continues a lesson popup, Tab skips a lesson once its "Need Help?" popup has appeared.
- Store item names and online lobbies are not read yet.
- The appearance descriptions have not been reviewed by a sighted person; the radar assumes Player 1 vs CPU and has not yet been evaluated by ear.
- Narration is always in English. Only the Steam version is supported.
