Killer Instinct Accessibility Mod v0.2.2
Pre-release
Pre-release
Fourth test build of the Killer Instinct Accessibility Mod (Steam version, free base game and Anniversary Edition). This build adds costume colour descriptions and reads the Emporium's popups in Shadow Lords.
New in this version
- Costume colours: on the colour stage of Character Select, Ctrl+Shift+A adds a line for the colour under the cursor, for the default and the retro costume ("Colour 3: much of the costume changes; dark blue becomes dark grey, brown becomes grey"). The lines are generated from the game's textures and live in
kiaccess\data\costume_colors.json, so they can be edited. - Shadow Lords Emporium: the buy popup is read ("Buy Healing Pack? Pay 700 astral gems, 2 of 2"; Left and Right switch between KI gold and astral gems), as are the "Not enough" popup with its store options, the KI gold purchase popup, and the "Insufficient Materials" popup on the Craft tab with its Yes and No choices. Crafting an item announces "Crafted" with its name. The KI Gold tab reads each bundle's amount and price.
- Shadow Lords Emporium: when you buy a pack, the cards are read as you turn them ("Pack opened, 7 cards. Gibraltar Shield Mk III, rare, 1 of 7"), with the card's description on Ctrl+Shift+D. This reader has not been tested with a real purchase yet; please report what you hear.
- Shadow Lords item names and descriptions no longer contain the game's colour-tag markup.
Install
Unzip and copy dinput8.dll and the kiaccess folder next to KILLERINSTINCTX64_R.EXE in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Killer Instinct\. Run your screen reader (tested with NVDA) and launch the game from Steam. Upgrading from an earlier version: overwrite the same files. To uninstall, delete dinput8.dll.
Known issues
- Shadow Lords: the pack reveal reader is untested with a real purchase. The Barracks artifact list, the Spirit Lair detail and recharge popups, the Archives, the leaderboard and the daily rewards panel are not read yet. Cinematic subtitles are not spoken (the cinematics are voiced).
- When a popup opens, the first thing spoken can be a button of the previous popup; the popup itself follows at once.
- The colour descriptions name colours only, never which garment changes, and small details may be missed. The default look of each costume is still a hand-written text that no sighted person has reviewed.
- The first Shadow Lords run is a three-turn tutorial that cannot be left early; Enter continues a lesson popup, Tab skips a lesson once its "Need Help?" popup has appeared.
- The radar pauses during the "Ready, Fight" intro and for up to 3 seconds after a round ends. Store item names and online lobbies are not read yet.
- Narration is always in English. Only the Steam version is supported.
