Envy 1.11.1: Back on Intel Macs

Envy runs on Intel Macs again.

• Intel Macs are supported again. Recent builds were compiled for Apple Silicon only, so on an Intel Mac Envy simply wouldn't open. Builds now carry both architectures and run natively on either. If you're on an Intel Mac, grab the new build from envynote.app — the old one couldn't launch far enough to update itself.
• Fixed: Envy advertised itself as working on macOS 14 and later when it actually requires macOS 26. On anything older it would get partway into launching and fail with an unhelpful error. It now states the real requirement, so the Finder tells you plainly instead of letting you find out the hard way.

Envy 1.11.0: Keep Your Place

Keep your place: pinned notes can stay put while the list scrolls, and searching now takes you to the match instead of only lighting it up.

• Pinned notes can stay visible while you scroll. Settings → General → Note List → "Keep pinned notes visible while scrolling" parks your pinned notes in a strip just under the search bar, so they stay reachable however far down the list you go. With the strip on you can pin up to three notes; leave it off and pinning works exactly as before, unlimited and scrolling away with everything else.
• Search jumps to the match. Typing in the search box used to highlight every match in the open note without moving it, so a match below the fold lit up entirely offscreen. The editor now scrolls the first match into view, about a third of the way down so there's context beneath it rather than pinning it to the bottom edge. Your cursor is left where it was.
• Fixed: submitting a fleeting note from the Inbox did nothing when its title matched a note you already had, instead of filing it as "Foo (2)". A regression from 1.10.0's path hardening.

Envy 1.10.0: Turn Off What You Don't Use

Make Envy only the parts you use: the Inbox and Continuity Camera can each be switched off completely.

• Turn off the Inbox. Settings → General → "Enable Inbox" hides it entirely: no count beside the search box, no notes set apart as fleeting, and the inbox: operator goes quiet.
• Turn off Continuity Camera. Settings → Import hides the camera button and its right-click item, while text recognition stays independently available, so images you drag or paste in are still searchable.
• Scanned documents span the full width. A tall, full-page scan can now stretch to the editor's edge instead of being capped short.
• Fixed: a quoted search-operator argument like folder:"test folder" now styles as one unit; and typing * reliably pairs it, with a second * making it bold, no stray asterisks.
• Security: hardened how attachment and subfolder paths are handled, so a crafted note or name can never reach outside your Index.

Envy 1.9.0 — Scan & Search the Physical World

Scan and search the physical world: photograph or scan straight into a note, and Envy reads the text so you can find it later. Everything runs on-device: no account, no network, nothing leaves your Mac.

Capture from your iPhone

A camera button beside the search bar (and right-click → "Import from iPhone or iPad" inside any note) takes a photo or scans a document with your phone. A photo becomes a fresh note; a scan comes in cropped to the page and straightened, one image per page, titled by the date.

Search the text inside your images

With OCR on (Settings → Import → Camera & Scanning), Envy reads your photos and scans on-device and search finds them: img: whiteboard searches only your images, and a plain search reaches image text too. Matching words light up right on the picture.

Live Text and transcription

Drag across the text on any scan to select and copy it, or right-click for "Copy Text from Image" and "Transcribe Text into Note" (which drops the words in as plain text below the picture).

Newer Kindles, via Moorage

Kindle import now also reads from an MTP Kindle mounted with Moorage (under ~/Moorage), so newer models work too, not just older USB-mounting ones.

Printed pages, whiteboards, and receipts read cleanly; handwriting is a coin flip.

Envy 1.8.9

Bring your reading home: Envy now imports Kindle highlights.

⚠️ Important — older Kindles only for now. This works only with older Kindles that mount as a USB drive in Finder. Newer Kindles connect over MTP, which macOS doesn't mount natively, so they are not supported yet. Support for MTP Kindles is coming later.

Import Kindle highlights and notes. Turn on Settings → Import → Kindle, plug in your Kindle, and press Import from Kindle (also in the File menu). Every highlight arrives in your Inbox as its own fleeting note, titled by the quote's first words and page (the map is not the territory, p42), the passage as a blockquote, the book as a [[link]]. A note you typed on the Kindle attaches beneath its passage; adjusted highlights collapse to their final form; bookmarks are skipped. No Kindle handy? "Choose Clippings File…" imports a copied My Clippings.txt from anywhere.

It remembers what it imported. Plug in after each reading session and only new highlights come in, even if you've since filed, retitled, or deleted the earlier ones. That memory lives in an Envy Data folder inside your Index, so it travels with your vault: import on one Mac and a second Mac on the same synced vault won't re-import. "Forget Import History" resets it.

Make the notes yours. Choose what the title carries (page, location, both, or neither) and whether each note's attribution shows the author and location.

Fixed: a folder dot's hover label no longer blanks the note-list date when the two aren't near touching.

Envy 1.8.8

Your vault, browsable: type an operator with nothing after it and the list becomes a catalog you can pick from, rename from, and trust.

Bare tag: reveals your whole tag catalog. Every tag as its colored pill with a note count, most-used first. Click one (or arrow to it and press Return) to see its notes; right-click to recolor, or Rename Tag… to rename it across every note at once. Renaming into an existing tag asks first, because that's really a merge: every note follows, and the surviving tag keeps its color.

Bare folder: does the same for folders, each with its colored dot and note count. Right-click for Rename Folder…: every note inside moves along, colors follow for the folder and everything nested in it (the thing a Finder rename silently loses), and adding a / re-files it under another folder. Collisions and reserved names are refused with a clear message.

What you click is exactly what you get. Quoting an operator argument now demands an exact match: tag:"tag" matches only #tag, never #tags; folder:"Work" means that folder and its nested folders, never Workshop. Every click produces the quoted form, so a row's count always equals what clicking shows. Bare arguments keep the friendlier partial match for typing.

Long titles in the note list yield gracefully: the date is never cut off; the title hard-stops before it, fades at the edge, and scrolls on hover to reveal the rest.

Fixed: checkbox clicks registering far right of the box; short titles twitching on hover; shortcuts acting on an invisible note while browsing; renames racing unsaved typing; floating notes dipping behind a pinned-on-top main window; browser highlights walking off-screen.

Envy 1.8.7

Checkboxes redrawn. Task checkboxes are now crisp vector shapes instead of a symbol glyph, so they scale properly with editor zoom (⌘+): the box grows with your text instead of staying tiny beside it, and a checked box is a filled box with a contrasting checkmark. They sit right at every size and on every theme.

Recolor a folder from the title bar. Right-click the folder chip beside a note's title for the same color menu the list's dot offers: presets, a custom color, or Remove Color. The color belongs to the folder, so it repaints everywhere at once.

Fixed: the folder-dot hover label no longer clips at the top of the list or floats over the note title. On a trailing dot (the default) it now sits in the empty space just to the right of the dot, on every row.

Envy 1.8.6

Keep Envy on Top. Right-click the menu bar eye and choose Keep Envy on Top: the whole window floats above every other app's windows until you toggle it off, the whole-app version of pinning a peek, for transcribing or referencing while you work elsewhere. ⌥⌘T flips it from anywhere (rebindable in Settings > Shortcuts), it survives relaunches, and it wins over hide-on-focus-loss while on. Deliberate hiding (hotkey, menu bar click) still works.

Fixed: submitting several fleeting notes to the same folder in a row: the second consecutive submit silently did nothing until you left and re-entered the inbox. Each submit now files the note actually on screen.

The footer's vault-counts divider now matches the bar's own rule: full height, same 1pt thickness and color.

Envy 1.8.5

Folders, everywhere you look: the answer to "where does this note live?" is now one glance (or one click) away from wherever you are.

• The open note names its folder in the title bar. A chip in the folder's own color, beside the title: a folder glyph in an outlined capsule, deliberately a different species from the filled tag chips. Click it to see that folder's notes; absent for root and Inbox notes. Settings > General > "Show folder in title bar" hides it.
• Click a folder dot to see that folder. The dot (or name chip) in the note list now pivots the search to folder:"Name" on click, the same jump a tag chip makes. Right-click still recolors; hover still names it.
• Ghost text for tags. Start typing # in a note and the rest of an existing tag appears in grey, your most-used match first, exactly like [[link]] completion: Tab or Right-arrow accepts. Works in peeks and pop-outs too.
• Vault totals in the footer. How many notes and folders you have, sitting to the right of the word and character counts behind a small divider. Settings > General turns it off.
• Fixed: a long folder name on a dot's hover label no longer gets cut off at the window edge. Clicking the menu bar icon while Envy is in full screen no longer hides the window; it just brings Envy front.

Envy 1.8.4

Filing and finding: every organizing axis in Envy now has a first-class search operator, and folders can be targeted from everywhere a note is born or reviewed.

• interlink:Note Title matches everything connected to a note in either direction: the notes linking to it plus the notes it links out to. Composes with everything: interlink:Project todo: finds open tasks across everything touching Project.
• Ghost links. A [[link]] whose target note doesn't exist yet renders dimmed (still clickable; clicking creates the note). Search ghost: to round them all up; -ghost: for notes whose links all resolve.
• folder:name finds notes filed under a folder, partial and case-insensitive, matched against the whole relative path. Bare folder: means anything filed; -folder: alone means the unfiled notes at the root.
• title:word restricts matching to titles only: the note named for a thing, not every note that mentions it.
• Bare tag: / -tag:: any tagged note, or the completely untagged. -tag: orphan: stale: is the full hygiene sweep.
• Autofill for operator arguments. link:, interlink:, title:, and folder: complete their arguments as you type; accepting auto-quotes anything with spaces.
• Submit a fleeting note straight into a folder from the Submit button's menu; a plain click still files to the Index root.
• Create into a folder from the search box. Type Work/Retro notes and press Return: the note is born inside Work/. The slash only acts as a path when the part before it is a real folder.
• Fixed: commas inside quoted operator arguments no longer split the search into meaningless OR groups; img:/embed:/stale: register as operators in the search box again; the blockquote rule no longer draws through single-line quote text.
