Setting up a new project

Joel Meador edited this page Jun 8, 2026 · 1 revision

What are the general steps you should take when setting up a new project, regardless of project type?

Generally speaking, you can follow these steps to set up a new project:

  1. Clone the project
  2. Install any languages the project uses via asdf
  3. Install any external services the project uses (postgres, elasticsearch, redis, etc)
  4. Install project dependencies (bundle install, mix deps.get, yarn install)
  5. Configure the database (config/database.yml, .env.dev, config/dev.exs)
  6. Create the database (rails db.create, mix ecto.create)
  7. Migrate and seed the database (rails db.migrate, mix ecto.migrate)
  8. Run the server (rails s, mix phx.server)

Some project may have automated means of setting themselves up. Please check the README in the project you're working on for specific installation instructions.
