Read Libby library loans on a reMarkable Paper Pro Move (and, untested, the Paper Pro), in Libby's own web reader. This is rmweb 0.9.7 plus this fork's Libby changes, packaged as one AppLoad app.

Tested on: one reMarkable Paper Pro Move, OS 3.27.3. Expected to work on the Paper Pro but not tried there yet. Not for the Paper Pro Pure.
Needs: developer mode, reManager (or Vellum on the tablet), and a library card.

New in 0.3.2: magazines

  • Scroll articles. In a magazine article (Libby's reading mode), swipe up and down to scroll.
  • Next and previous article. In an article, swipe left for the next article and right for the previous one. Libby has no button for this inside an article, so the app closes the article, moves to the next one in the magazine and reopens it in reading mode: you briefly see the magazine page in between.
  • Done works. Taps near the screen edges in a magazine now reach Libby's own buttons (such as Done) instead of turning the page. Swipes still turn pages; books keep their edge taps.

Magazine pages in page mode are large pictures and take a few seconds to draw on the tablet.

0.3.1 made the package size itself for the Paper Pro as well as the Move. The Paper Pro is still untested: if you try it, please open an issue saying how it went. Features from 0.3.0 (AppLoad window, minimising with the book open, pen highlights, typed notes) are described in the 0.3.0 release.

Install with the reManager desktop app

  1. Download libby-reader-0.3.2-r0.apk from the assets below (about 107 MB).

  2. Open reManager and connect to the tablet.

  3. Utilities tab, File Browser: go to /home/root and drag the .apk in (or use Upload File). Wait for the transfer to finish.

  4. Utilities tab, Terminal: install it.

    /home/root/.vellum/bin/vellum add --allow-untrusted /home/root/libby-reader-0.3.2-r0.apk

It ends with a line starting OK:. Upgrading from an earlier version is the same command, and keeps your Libby sign-in.

  5. In the same terminal, delete the uploaded file and restart the reMarkable interface so AppLoad notices the new app:

    rm /home/root/libby-reader-0.3.2-r0.apk
    /home/root/xovi/start

The tablet's screen restarts and asks for your passcode if you have one.

  6. On the tablet, open AppLoad and tap Libby.

It is not in Vellum's official index, so it will not appear in reManager's list of available packages. Once installed, it shows up under Mods as libby-reader.

First launch

  1. Libby opens in an AppLoad window and shows a page about one TLS option Libby needs. Tap Turn it on and restart if you accept it; docs/tls.md explains what it changes. Libby reconnects in the same window a few seconds later.
  2. Libby asks whether you have a library card. Sign in with your card, or choose to copy from another device and enter the code it shows into the Libby app on your phone (Menu, Settings, Copy To Another Device).

Using it

  • Toolbar: Shelf, B&W/Colour, Font, A-, A+, Refresh. Tap the top of the screen to bring it up, or long-press while a book is open.
  • In a book: tap the middle to show or hide Libby's controls; swipe, or tap the left or right edge, to turn pages once Libby's controls are hidden.
  • Leaving: drag down from the top centre of the screen for AppLoad's window bar. _ minimises Libby (tap _ on the leftover bar to bring it back, book still open); X closes it. Don't reopen a running Libby from its icon.
