Libby reader 0.3.2

Choose a tag to compare

@snydersaurus snydersaurus released this 11 Oct 00:55

Read Libby library loans on a reMarkable Paper Pro Move (and, untested, the Paper Pro), in Libby's own web reader. This is rmweb 0.9.7 plus this fork's Libby changes, packaged as one AppLoad app.

Tested on: one reMarkable Paper Pro Move, OS 3.27.3. Expected to work on the Paper Pro but not tried there yet. Not for the Paper Pro Pure.
Needs: developer mode, reManager (or Vellum on the tablet), and a library card.

New in 0.3.2: magazines

  • Scroll articles. In a magazine article (Libby's reading mode), swipe up and down to scroll.
  • Next and previous article. In an article, swipe left for the next article and right for the previous one. Libby has no button for this inside an article, so the app closes the article, moves to the next one in the magazine and reopens it in reading mode: you briefly see the magazine page in between.
  • Done works. Taps near the screen edges in a magazine now reach Libby's own buttons (such as Done) instead of turning the page. Swipes still turn pages; books keep their edge taps.

Magazine pages in page mode are large pictures and take a few seconds to draw on the tablet.

0.3.1 made the package size itself for the Paper Pro as well as the Move. The Paper Pro is still untested: if you try it, please open an issue saying how it went. Features from 0.3.0 (AppLoad window, minimising with the book open, pen highlights, typed notes) are described in the 0.3.0 release.

Install with the reManager desktop app

  1. Download libby-reader-0.3.2-r0.apk from the assets below (about 107 MB).

  2. Open reManager and connect to the tablet.

  3. Utilities tab, File Browser: go to /home/root and drag the .apk in (or use Upload File). Wait for the transfer to finish.

  4. Utilities tab, Terminal: install it.

    /home/root/.vellum/bin/vellum add --allow-untrusted /home/root/libby-reader-0.3.2-r0.apk

It ends with a line starting OK:. Upgrading from an earlier version is the same command, and keeps your Libby sign-in.

  5. In the same terminal, delete the uploaded file and restart the reMarkable interface so AppLoad notices the new app:

    rm /home/root/libby-reader-0.3.2-r0.apk
    /home/root/xovi/start

The tablet's screen restarts and asks for your passcode if you have one.

  6. On the tablet, open AppLoad and tap Libby.

It is not in Vellum's official index, so it will not appear in reManager's list of available packages. Once installed, it shows up under Mods as libby-reader.

First launch

  1. Libby opens in an AppLoad window and shows a page about one TLS option Libby needs. Tap Turn it on and restart if you accept it; docs/tls.md explains what it changes. Libby reconnects in the same window a few seconds later.
  2. Libby asks whether you have a library card. Sign in with your card, or choose to copy from another device and enter the code it shows into the Libby app on your phone (Menu, Settings, Copy To Another Device).

Using it

  • Toolbar: Shelf, B&W/Colour, Font, A-, A+, Refresh. Tap the top of the screen to bring it up, or long-press while a book is open.
  • In a book: tap the middle to show or hide Libby's controls; swipe, or tap the left or right edge, to turn pages once Libby's controls are hidden.
  • Leaving: drag down from the top centre of the screen for AppLoad's window bar. _ minimises Libby (tap _ on the leftover bar to bring it back, book still open); X closes it. Don't reopen a running Libby from its icon.

Libby reader 0.3.1

Read Libby library loans on a reMarkable Paper Pro Move (and, untested, the Paper Pro), in Libby's own web reader. This is rmweb 0.9.7 plus this fork's Libby changes, packaged as one AppLoad app.

Tested on: one reMarkable Paper Pro Move, OS 3.27.3. Expected to work on the Paper Pro but not tried there yet. Not for the Paper Pro Pure.
Needs: developer mode, reManager (or Vellum on the tablet), and a library card.

New in 0.3.1: Paper Pro support (untested)

The app now lets AppLoad size its window for whichever tablet it is on, instead of always asking for the Move's shape. It already detected the Paper Pro and used its screen size, so this should be all the Paper Pro needed, but nobody has tried it on one yet. If you do, please open an issue saying how it went, working or not.

Nothing else changed: on the Move, 0.3.1 behaves exactly like 0.3.0. Features from 0.3.0 (AppLoad window, minimising with the book open, pen highlights, typed notes) are described in the 0.3.0 release.

Install with the reManager desktop app

  1. Download libby-reader-0.3.1-r0.apk from the assets below (about 107 MB).

  2. Open reManager and connect to the tablet.

  3. Utilities tab, File Browser: go to /home/root and drag the .apk in (or use Upload File). Wait for the transfer to finish.

  4. Utilities tab, Terminal: install it.

    /home/root/.vellum/bin/vellum add --allow-untrusted /home/root/libby-reader-0.3.1-r0.apk

It ends with a line starting OK:. Upgrading from an earlier version is the same command, and keeps your Libby sign-in.

The tablet's screen restarts and asks for your passcode if you have one.

Libby app 0.3.0

@snydersaurus snydersaurus released this 04 Oct 15:11

Read Libby library loans on a reMarkable Paper Pro Move, in Libby's own web reader. This is rmweb 0.9.7 plus this fork's Libby changes, packaged as one AppLoad app.

Tested on: one reMarkable Paper Pro Move, OS 3.27.3. Nothing else.
Needs: developer mode, reManager (or Vellum on the tablet), and a library card.

New in 0.3.0: Libby runs as an AppLoad window

The normal reMarkable interface keeps running underneath, instead of being shut down while you read.

  • No passcode prompt when you leave Libby.
  • Minimise and come back. Libby keeps your book open while you use your notebooks, even with wifi off.
  • The tablet's own sleep and power button work as usual.
  • Pen highlights. Hold the pen on a word until it highlights, drag to the end of the passage, lift, then tap Highlight. Tap a highlight, then Make a note, to type a note.
  • The TLS option reconnects in the same window instead of restarting the app.

Install with the reManager desktop app

  1. Download libby-reader-0.3.0-r0.apk from the assets below (about 107 MB).

  2. Open reManager and connect to the tablet.

  3. Utilities tab, File Browser: go to /home/root and drag the .apk in (or use Upload File). Wait for the transfer to finish.

Libby app 0.2.1

@snydersaurus snydersaurus released this 03 Oct 15:19

Install with the reManager desktop app

  1. Download libby-reader-0.2.1-r0.apk from the assets below (about 107 MB).

  2. Open reManager and connect to the tablet.

  3. Utilities tab, File Browser: go to /home/root and drag the .apk in (or use Upload File). Wait for the transfer to finish.

  4. Utilities tab, Terminal: install it.

    /home/root/.vellum/bin/vellum add --allow-untrusted /home/root/libby-reader-0.2.1-r0.apk

It ends with a line starting OK:.

  5. In the same terminal, delete the uploaded file and restart the reMarkable interface so AppLoad notices the new app:

    rm /home/root/libby-reader-0.2.1-r0.apk
    /home/root/xovi/start

  3. The toolbar along the top belongs to this app: Shelf, B&W/Colour, Font, A-, A+, Refresh, and X to quit. Tap the top of the screen to bring it up, or long-press while a book is open.

In a book

  • Tap the middle of the page to show or hide Libby's own controls.
  • Swipe, or tap the left or right edge, to turn pages. This works once Libby's controls are hidden.
  • Press the power button to sleep with the book kept open; press again to wake. An open book keeps paging without wifi until you quit the app.

Other ways to install

What's new in 0.2.1

  • Swipes that start on the bezel turn the page. Swipe distances now scale to the screen, and a quick short flick counts.
  • Typed notes. Tap a highlight, then Make a note, and type with the on-screen keyboard.
  • The signing key's public half is now in the repo (packaging/vellum) instead of on the release page.

Making new highlights still needs the experimental AppLoad-window version, which is not part of this release.

@snydersaurus snydersaurus released this 02 Oct 10:47

Self-contained AppLoad app: rmweb 0.9.7 plus this fork's Libby changes, in one folder. A separate rmweb install is not needed.

Tested on: one reMarkable Paper Pro Move, OS 3.27.3. Nothing else.

Needs: developer mode, XOVI and AppLoad already installed, a library card.

Install (tablet on USB):

ssh root@10.11.99.1 'tar -C /home/root/xovi/exthome/appload -xzf -' < libby-0.1.0.tar.gz

Then restart xochitl through XOVI so AppLoad shows the Libby icon.

Or install with Vellum / reManager (not in Vellum's official index, so from a file):

scp libby-reader-0.1.0-r0.apk root@10.11.99.1:/home/root/
ssh root@10.11.99.1 '/home/root/.vellum/bin/vellum add --allow-untrusted /home/root/libby-reader-0.1.0-r0.apk'

Details, including verified-signature install: packaging/vellum/README.md

TLS: Libby will not connect until you turn on the opt-in TLS option. Read docs/tls.md first; it explains what changes.
