Pocket Sense v2.2.8

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 17 Oct 18:48

🔒 Fixes

  • Fixed: on some phones, reopening Pocket Sense after closing it could lose the encryption key, and the app said it couldn't open your data. Reported on a RedMagic 8S Pro (Android 13). The most likely cause: by default, the secure-storage library deletes everything it holds when Android's Keystore gives it an error at startup. That's now turned off: if the Keystore misbehaves, you get an error with Try again, and nothing is deleted. Data already lost this way can't be recovered, so keep automatic backups on (Settings → Backup).
  • With a PIN set, the app now stays locked if the Keystore can't be read. Before, an error there opened the app without asking for the PIN.
  • On Android, the error now names Android's keystore instead of the Linux keyring.

Download

Android

  • Also on F-Droid, which keeps it updated. It ships these same signed APKs, so you can switch between the two and keep your data.
  • PocketSense-v2.2.8-arm64-v8a.apk: almost all modern Android phones. Use this one if unsure.
  • PocketSense-v2.2.8-armeabi-v7a.apk: older 32-bit phones
  • PocketSense-v2.2.8-x86_64.apk: emulators and Chromebooks

Installs as an update over any earlier version and keeps your data.

Linux (x86_64): pick one.

  • Debian, Ubuntu, Mint: PocketSense-v2.2.8-linux-x64.deb
    sudo apt install ./PocketSense-v2.2.8-linux-x64.deb
  • Fedora, openSUSE: PocketSense-v2.2.8-linux-x64.rpm
    sudo dnf install ./PocketSense-v2.2.8-linux-x64.rpm # or: sudo zypper install
  • Any distro: PocketSense-v2.2.8-linux-x64.AppImage. Make it executable and run it.
  • Any distro: PocketSense-v2.2.8-linux-x64.tar.gz. Unpack it and run ./PocketSense/pocket_sense.

All need glibc 2.35 or newer and a running keyring (GNOME Keyring or KWallet). With the AppImage or the tarball you also need GTK 3, and parecord for voice entry (pulseaudio-utils on Debian/Ubuntu/Fedora, libpulse on Arch).

🐛 Fix

  • With 3-button navigation, the Save button of the transaction form sat behind the navigation bar (Android 15 and later), so tapping its middle could press Home instead. It now sits above the bar. This affected adding, editing and voice entry. Thanks to the F-Droid tester who reported it.

@github-actions github-actions released this 11 Oct 16:19

🔒 Private screen

  • Your balances no longer show in Android's recent-apps screen, and Pocket Sense can't be captured in screenshots or screen recordings, as banking apps do.
  • It's on by default. Turn it off in Settings → Security → Private screen, for example to take a screenshot.

Also

  • Linux downloads now come with SHA256SUMS-linux.txt. Check a download with sha256sum -c --ignore-missing SHA256SUMS-linux.txt.

  • The release build now uses pinned versions of its CI tools, so a tampered tool can't sneak into a release.

Pocket Sense v2.2.4

@github-actions github-actions released this 07 Oct 18:56

A build-only release: the app works the same as v2.2.3.

  • Android version codes now follow F-Droid's scheme (build number × 10 + CPU type), so the newest version always wins whatever your phone's CPU. Updates from earlier versions install as usual.

@github-actions github-actions released this 07 Oct 15:30

A build-only release: the app works the same as v2.2.2.

  • The Android APKs no longer include Google Play's encrypted dependency list, which F-Droid doesn't accept.

Pocket Sense v2.2.2

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 06 Oct 21:27

A build-only release: the app works the same as v2.2.1.

  • Reproducible builds. The Android APKs are now built so that anyone can rebuild them from this source and get byte-identical files. This is what lets F-Droid ship these APKs, signed by the developer, instead of re-signing its own: you can move between the GitHub and F-Droid versions without uninstalling.

@github-actions github-actions released this 06 Oct 20:23

A small release: screenshots and documentation. The app works the same as v2.2.0.

  • Screenshots of every screen, phone and desktop, in English and Arabic, in the README and the store listing.
  • A demo backup (docs/demo-backup.json) with three months of made-up data. Import it from Settings → Backup → Import data to try the app before entering your own.
  • The README now covers every feature.

🔄 Sync between your devices

  • Pair your phone with your computer, or two people's phones, and they keep the same data, directly over your Wi-Fi. There's no server, no account and no internet involved.
  • Turn it on in Settings → Sync and give the device a name. Then open Pair a device on both devices, tap the other one, and check that both screens show the same 6-digit code.
  • If both devices already have data, you can combine the two or replace this device's data with the other's.
  • Devices sync when the app opens or comes back, when a paired device appears on the network, and a couple of seconds after each change. The sync button in the top bar syncs right away.
  • If two devices change the same entry while apart, the later change wins. Two categories with the same name merge into one.
  • Sync runs while the app is open: two phones sync when both have Pocket Sense open.

🔐 Private by design

  • Everything synced is encrypted and authenticated with a key only your two devices share. A device you haven't paired gets nothing.
  • Pocket Sense talks only to devices on your local network, and only listens while sync is on. It's off until you turn it on.
  • Android now asks for network access. Android requires it for any network use, even on your own Wi-Fi. Pocket Sense still never connects to the internet on Android.

Also

  • Erasing all data now also unpairs the device.
  • Importing a backup on a synced device replaces the data on your other devices too, at their next sync.
  • Once a device is paired, the starter categories no longer rename themselves when you change the language.

⚠️ Before updating

This version upgrades the database, and older versions can't open it afterwards. Export a backup first if you might want to go back.

Linux firewall: if your firewall blocks incoming connections (ufw on some distros, firewalld on Fedora), allow port 47823 or devices won't find each other:

sudo ufw allow 47823
# or, on Fedora:
sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --add-port=47823/tcp --add-port=47823/udp && sudo firewall-cmd --reload
