fishpr 0.3.0: retry, a new HUD, and galactic speeds

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 01 Oct 18:09

fishpr 0.3.0 is out now! ✨

Handles disfluencies the best you'll see anywhere

Talk the way you actually talk. fishpr cleans it up before it pastes:

  • Filled pauses (or fillers): "um", "uh", "ah".
  • Repetitions: "I want, I want to go".
  • False starts: starting a sentence, dropping it, and starting again.
  • Self-repairs (or self-corrections): saying something wrong and fixing it on the fly.

Galactic speeds

Your audio streams while you're still talking, so the text lands about half a second after you let go of Ctrl+Space, however long you spoke.

Built-in retry

Nothing you say is lost to a network hiccup anymore. If transcription fails, the pill stays on screen with a retry button, ringed by a three-second countdown. Click it and the same recording is sent again, with no need to say it twice. Hover over the button to pause the countdown.

If fishpr hears no speech, the pill says No speech detected and offers the same retry, which skips the voice check in case it got it wrong. Both replace the old error notifications.

Better HUD

  • A new pill: solid black, with bars that move with your voice, and no more "Recording…" label.
  • It stays while transcribing, with a spinner, instead of vanishing the moment you let go.
  • It pops in with a little bounce and fades out as your text lands.
  • A new tray icon that's the same in every state, now that the pill shows what's going on. It's in color, so it's finally visible on light panels too.

Heads-up

  • Dictation now goes to Google's speech service, the one behind the microphone button on gemini.google.com, instead of ChatGPT's. It's an unofficial endpoint, and your audio is sent as you speak, including on an accidental press where nobody talks.
  • GNOME is no longer supported. fishpr targets KDE Plasma 6 on Wayland. On other desktops, bind fishpr --toggle to a key; there's no hold-to-talk or on-screen pill there.

Updating

  • Ubuntu / Debian: sudo apt update && sudo apt install fishpr
  • Arch: sudo pacman -Syu

Then restart fishpr: run pkill -x fishpr and launch it from the app menu. Or run the install command again, which updates and restarts in one go.

fishpr 0.2.1: Ubuntu 24.04 fixes

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 30 Sep 08:08

A fix for Ubuntu 24.04, where every recording failed.

Fixes

  • Recording works on Ubuntu 24.04 again. Dictation failed with "pw-record failed: unrecognized option '--raw'", because Ubuntu 24.04's PipeWire (1.0) doesn't have that option. fishpr now only uses it where the installed PipeWire supports it.
  • The installer recognizes GNOME when run from an IDE's built-in terminal, or from tmux or ssh. Before, it skipped the GNOME setup there and wrongly said "Hold Ctrl+Space". On GNOME 46–47 (Ubuntu 24.04), that meant no shortcut was set up at all.

Updating

  • Ubuntu / Debian: sudo apt update && sudo apt install fishpr
  • Arch: sudo pacman -Syu

Then restart fishpr: run pkill -x fishpr and launch it from the app menu. Or run the install command again, which updates and restarts in one go.

On Ubuntu 24.04: GNOME 46 can't give fishpr a hold-to-talk shortcut. If Ctrl+Space does nothing, run the install command again from a regular terminal and answer y to the Ctrl+Space question. Or add a custom shortcut in Settings → Keyboard → Custom Shortcuts with the command fishpr --toggle. Either way, press once to start and again to stop.

fishpr 0.2.0: GNOME and Ubuntu

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Sep 19:12

fishpr now works on GNOME and installs on Ubuntu and Debian, as well as on KDE Plasma and Arch.

Install

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/srafis/fishpr/main/install.sh | sh

On Arch this adds the pacman repo, as before. On Ubuntu 24.04+ and Debian 13+ it adds a signed apt repo, so new versions arrive with apt upgrade.

New

  • GNOME support. Hold Ctrl+Space to talk on GNOME 48 and later (Ubuntu 25.10 and 26.04). GNOME asks once whether to allow the shortcut. You can change it later in Settings → Apps → fishpr.
  • Recording notification on GNOME. GNOME can't show the "Recording…" pill, so a "Recording…" notification appears while you speak and closes when you stop.
  • Ubuntu and Debian packages from a signed apt repo.
  • The installer sets up GNOME for you, and asks before changing anything:
    • It turns on the AppIndicator extension if no tray is available, so the fishpr tray icon shows.
    • On GNOME 46–47 (Ubuntu 24.04), which can't do hold-to-talk, it binds Ctrl+Space to start and stop dictation instead.
  • fishpr --toggle starts or stops recording in the running fishpr, like a tray click. Bind it to a key on desktops where fishpr can't register its own shortcut, such as sway or Hyprland.
  • Only one fishpr runs at a time. Launching a second copy exits with "fishpr is already running".

Fixes

  • fishpr keeps running when no tray is available. On stock GNOME it used to exit at startup.
  • Released builds no longer depend on the build server's CPU, so the voice check can't crash with "illegal instruction" on older processors. They now need a 2013 or newer x86_64 CPU (Intel Haswell or AMD equivalent).
  • The "Ctrl+Space unavailable" notification appears once, not at every login.

Upgrading on KDE

Nothing changes for day-to-day use, and your custom shortcut is kept. A few things are named differently:

  • The app's desktop entry is now io.github.srafis.fishpr.desktop. If you pinned fishpr in the launcher, pin it again.
  • If pasting goes through the "Remote control" prompt (no uinput access), KDE asks for that permission once more.
  • For logs, use journalctl --user -u 'app-*fishpr*' -f.

To use the new version right away, run the install command again, or run pkill -x fishpr and launch fishpr from the app menu.

Not yet supported

  • Fedora has no package yet. Build from source for now.
  • The "Recording…" pill overlay is KDE-only. GNOME gets the notification instead.
