fishpr 0.2.0: GNOME and Ubuntu
fishpr now works on GNOME and installs on Ubuntu and Debian, as well as on KDE Plasma and Arch.
Install
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/srafis/fishpr/main/install.sh | shOn Arch this adds the pacman repo, as before. On Ubuntu 24.04+ and Debian 13+ it adds a signed apt repo, so new versions arrive with apt upgrade.
New
- GNOME support. Hold Ctrl+Space to talk on GNOME 48 and later (Ubuntu 25.10 and 26.04). GNOME asks once whether to allow the shortcut. You can change it later in Settings → Apps → fishpr.
- Recording notification on GNOME. GNOME can't show the "Recording…" pill, so a "Recording…" notification appears while you speak and closes when you stop.
- Ubuntu and Debian packages from a signed apt repo.
- The installer sets up GNOME for you, and asks before changing anything:
- It turns on the AppIndicator extension if no tray is available, so the fishpr tray icon shows.
- On GNOME 46–47 (Ubuntu 24.04), which can't do hold-to-talk, it binds Ctrl+Space to start and stop dictation instead.
fishpr --togglestarts or stops recording in the running fishpr, like a tray click. Bind it to a key on desktops where fishpr can't register its own shortcut, such as sway or Hyprland.- Only one fishpr runs at a time. Launching a second copy exits with "fishpr is already running".
Fixes
- fishpr keeps running when no tray is available. On stock GNOME it used to exit at startup.
- Released builds no longer depend on the build server's CPU, so the voice check can't crash with "illegal instruction" on older processors. They now need a 2013 or newer x86_64 CPU (Intel Haswell or AMD equivalent).
- The "Ctrl+Space unavailable" notification appears once, not at every login.
Upgrading on KDE
Nothing changes for day-to-day use, and your custom shortcut is kept. A few things are named differently:
- The app's desktop entry is now
io.github.srafis.fishpr.desktop. If you pinned fishpr in the launcher, pin it again. - If pasting goes through the "Remote control" prompt (no uinput access), KDE asks for that permission once more.
- For logs, use
journalctl --user -u 'app-*fishpr*' -f.
To use the new version right away, run the install command again, or run pkill -x fishpr and launch fishpr from the app menu.
Not yet supported
- Fedora has no package yet. Build from source for now.
- The "Recording…" pill overlay is KDE-only. GNOME gets the notification instead.
