• Show and Sort on a person's page. A person's page now has a filter button, like the Library. Show only photos, videos, favorites or screenshots of that person, and sort by date, name or size. The filter starts at All each time you open a person. The sort order is remembered.
• Android's text selection in Live Text. When you select text in a photo, Lumen now uses Android's own text toolbar, handles and magnifier, the same as in other apps:
  • Links, phone numbers, emails and addresses get Android's action for them (Open, Call, Map…).
  • Apps that work with text, such as Translate, are in the toolbar's ⋮ menu.
  • Cut and Paste are not there because text in a photo can't be edited.

• Shorter menus. The Library's menu now has three rows: Show, Sort and Grid. Each opens its own list.
• Album sort direction. In Collections, tap the current sort again to reverse it (newest or oldest first, A to Z or Z to A, most or fewest items). An arrow shows the direction.

Fixed

• Groups of strangers in People. Sometimes many unrelated faces (crowds, helmets, even animals) became one large "person". Lumen now checks that each face looks like the person as a whole, and breaks up these groups. People you named are not changed.

New

• Snapdragon NPU support. On phones with a supported Snapdragon chip (such as the 7 Gen 1, 8 Gen 1 and newer, up to the 8 Elite), Smart Search and text reading now run on the phone's NPU. Lumen checks that the NPU gives the right results first, and uses the GPU or CPU if it does not:

  • Indexing photos for Smart Search is about 3× faster than on the GPU, and about 9× faster than on the CPU.
  • Finding text in photos is about 2× faster.
  • The Accurate search model is a smaller download on these phones: 483 MB instead of 666 MB.
  • If you already downloaded it, Lumen gets the NPU version on Wi-Fi, and then deletes the old file. This saves about 180 MB.
  • Settings, then Smart Search now shows what each model runs on (NPU, GPU or CPU).
  • Snapdragon 888 and 888+ are not supported. Phones without a supported NPU work as before.

• New face recognition. Lumen now groups faces with much better models:

  • Accurate runs on the NPU of supported Snapdragon phones. It recognizes people in sunglasses, helmets and caps, from the side and with strong expressions.
  • Fast works on every phone. It is better and 2× faster than the old model.
  • People are split into fewer groups, and blurry or dark faces no longer join the wrong person.
  • To choose a model, go to Settings, then Smart Search, then Faces, then Recognition. Accurate needs a supported NPU.

• Faces without a name in the info panel. When you swipe up on a photo, faces that Lumen did not put with a person now show with Add Name.

When you update

If Lumen already found faces on your phone, it looks at them again with the new model:

• On phones with a supported NPU, Lumen asks first. "Update" downloads Accurate (about 133 MB). "Not Now" button downloads Fast (15 MB).
• On other phones, Lumen gets Fast on Wi-Fi without asking.
• People you named or hid stay as they are. All other faces are grouped again.

Fixed

• Crash when you took a screenshot in the viewer. Lumen closed if a new photo arrived while a photo was open. This is fixed.

Changed

• Smaller downloads. The APKs are smaller: 60 MB instead of 73 MB for most phones.

• New photos appear at once. Photos and screenshots you take while Lumen is open now appear in the Library in about a second. Before, they appeared only after you left Lumen and came back. (#7)
• Text in Videos settings. Go to Settings, then Smart Search, then Text in Videos. You can set how many frames each second Lumen reads for text in short, medium and long videos (1 to 60), and the maximum number of frames in a long video. More frames find quicker captions but take longer.
• Screenshots in Hidden. Lumen now blocks screenshots and screen recordings of Hidden, and Hidden is blank in recent apps. To allow screenshots, go to Settings, then Privacy, then Hidden, then Allow Screenshots.
• Star on GitHub. On the second day you use Lumen, it asks one time if you want to star the project on GitHub.

Fixed

• Viewer buttons on bright photos. In dark mode, the viewer's buttons and date were hard to see on white photos and screenshots. They are easy to see now. (#6)
• A person disappeared after you deleted their cover photo. The person now stays and gets a new cover at once.
• Setup:
  • If you refused photo access two times, the Allow Access button did nothing. It now opens Lumen's App Info page.
  • If you refused photo locations two times, setup now tells you that Android will not ask again.
  • When All Files or Media Management is on, you can now tap it to open Android's page and turn it off.
• Indexing:
  • If the model failed on a photo, Lumen skipped that photo permanently. It now tries the photo again on the next pass.
  • A model download that did not match its checksum tried again forever. It now stops after three tries and shows an error.
  • If a downloaded model file becomes damaged, Lumen now finds it and deletes it. Settings then lets you download it again.

• Faster text in videos. Lumen reads the text in videos 8–39% faster and finds the same text.
• Default frames in long videos. Lumen now reads 1 frame each second in videos longer than 2 minutes. Before, it read 120 frames in each video. To use the old way, set Max Frames to 120 in Text in Videos.
• Stronger protection for Encrypt Hidden. The file that lets you open your encrypted items after a reinstall now uses Argon2id. Lumen updates it automatically the next time you open Hidden with your PIN, pattern or password. A PIN or pattern can still be guessed if someone copies the vault folder from your phone. For the best protection, use a password.
• Backups. Android backups (Google, Seedvault and phone-to-phone transfer) now include only your settings. They do not include your lock, your vault key, your Hugging Face token, indexes or models.
• Software Update now checks that the downloaded APK matches the checksum on GitHub before it installs it.

A hotfix for the first setup.

Fixed

• Continue out of reach during setup. With large text, a large display size or a small screen, the Continue button on the Your Photos step could be below the bottom of the screen, and the step did not scroll. The setup steps scroll now, and the button stays at the bottom of the screen.
• Photo access after two refusals. If you refused photo access two times, Android stops asking, and the Allow Access button did nothing. It now opens Lumen's App Info page, where you can give access. Setup continues when you come back.
• Unrestricted Battery during setup. You can now turn the switch off. It opens Android's battery list.

• Setup buttons on Samsung phones. On some phones, Get Started, Continue and the other setup buttons needed many taps. One tap is enough now. (#1)
• Naming a person from Search. When Search suggested a name for a face, the Done button stayed grey. You can save the suggested name now.
• One person, shown twice. After you named a person from Search, Search showed them twice. It shows them one time now.
• Long-press to select. Sometimes long-press did nothing until you closed and opened Lumen again, for example after you took a screenshot. Long-press works every time now.
• Videos that stop. While Lumen indexes your videos in the background, a video you were watching could stop after a second. It keeps playing now.

The first release of Lumen: a photo gallery for Android with the smart features of Google Photos and the iPhone Photos app. All of the smart features work on your phone. Nothing leaves your phone.

Highlights

• Smart Search. Find a photo from a description, for example "cat on a sofa".
• Text in photos. Find photos from the words in them. Select and copy text in a photo.
• People. Lumen finds faces and puts the photos of each person together.
• Subtitles. Lumen writes subtitles for the speech in your videos.
• Hidden. Hide photos behind a PIN, a pattern, a password, or your fingerprint. You can also encrypt them.
• No account, no Google Play services, no cloud, no advertisements, and no analytics.
