Setting Up CI/CD

Conscience includes a GitHub Actions workflow that runs ethical analysis on pull requests and on a weekly schedule.

Quick version

Copy the workflow file into your repo:

cp .github/workflows/conscience.yml your-repo/.github/workflows/

What the workflow does

  • On PRs: runs conscience examine against the repository and posts signals as GitHub annotations, then runs conscience examine --pr ... --comment to post the PR-scoped analysis as a comment. The comment is edited in place on later pushes. A runner has no AI session logs, so the comment covers the GitHub side and tells the reader the local command that adds AI data to the same comment.
  • Weekly: runs a full analysis and creates a summary

The workflow needs pull-requests: write permission for the comment step; the shipped file sets it.

Setup

  1. The workflow needs a GitHub token with repo access. The default GITHUB_TOKEN provided by Actions works for public repos. For private repos, create a personal access token and add it as a repository secret.

  2. Copy .github/workflows/conscience.yml from the conscience repo into your project's .github/workflows/ directory.

  3. The workflow installs conscience via cargo install conscience. For faster CI runs, you can download the prebuilt binary from the releases page instead:

- name: Install Conscience
  run: |
    curl -sL https://github.com/subversivesoftwareorg/conscience/releases/latest/download/conscience-linux-amd64 -o conscience
    chmod +x conscience
    sudo mv conscience /usr/local/bin/

Evaluating PRs in CI

You can also use conscience examine --pr in CI to check individual PRs:

- name: Evaluate PR
run: conscience examine --pr ${{ github.event.pull_request.html_url }} --json
