The goal of this lab is to create a Kali Linux VM within our Proxmox environment.
In this section of the lab we will be using Proxmox to create the Kali VM.
- Click "Create VM" in the Proxmox web interface.
- Set VMID to 606
- Change VM name to InternKali-Emma
- Change Resource Pool to "interns"
- Select "Use CD/DVD disc image file (iso)"
- Set storage to "local"
- Select "kali-linux-2024.3" from the "ISO image" drop down box.
- Under Guest OS: Set type to "Linux" and version to "6.x - 2.6 Kernel"
- Leave everything as default but make sure the SCSI controller is "VirtIO SCSI single".
- Change Storage to "SYN-CR-MAIN"
- Make sure Bus/Device is SCSI and set to 1.
- Leave everything default
- Leave section defaults
- Change Cores to 2
- Leave section defaults - 2048 MiB
- Set bridge to "vmbr4" since that is the intern bridge
- Make sure Model is "VirtIO (paravirtualized)"
In This section we will be setting up and configuring the Kali Box. Navigate to the "Pool view" on Proxmox to see all the intern Kali Boxes.
- Select graphical interface (Something happened during boot and I didn't get a graphic interface option, the rest of my configuration will be command line based.
- Select English as the language
- Select United States as the Location
- Set Keyboard type as American English
- Select "Configure the Network Manually"
- Input IP address
- Input Default Gateway address
- Input DNS server addresses (I used 8.8.8.8 as a default for now).
- Enter Hostname: Kali1-Sullivan
- Skip Domain Name
- Create User: Username: Emma-Reg
- Select Time Zone
- I selected guided partitioning
- I selected the only disk option for partitioning
- I used the recommended scheme: All files in one partition
- Confirm and finish
- In the terminal, ping -c 1 the default gateway to check network connectivity
- In the terminal, ping -c 1 google.com to check out of network connectivity (I set my default DNS to start with at 8.8.8.8 so I should be able to ping by name)
In this lab I learned how to set up a Kali Box in Proxmox. This was an interesting lab because I've created Kali VMs in both VMWare and Parallels on my laptop, but now I've got a third virtualization software under my belt. This again will be helpful to know for future classes.
