Create an Ubuntu Box in Proxmox

Introduction

This lab is the same steps as the "Create a Kali Box in Proxmox" lab but we are using an Ubuntu ISO instead. I'm creating this tech journal page for anything different in the process. I'm going to block out any information specifically about CyberRange's Proxmox environment.

Note: In my lower section my computer name is Ubuntu1-Kali. That was a mistake I'm going to change my computer name to Ubuntu1-Sullivan.

Uploading an ISO to Proxmox

In the previous labs the ISOs had already been uploaded. So I want to document these steps for further use.

Step 1: Download the ISO

  1. I downloaded this ISO from the google drive folder.

Step 2: Find the local storage for the node

  1. Navigate over to the node and drop down the menu to find local storage

Step 3: Upload

  1. Click the upload button
  2. Select the file

  1. Click upload and wait for it to upload

VM Creation

Refer to Create a Kali Box in Proxmox.

Box Setup

Step 1: Configure Options

My box booted up into a GUI setup

  1. Choose English as the language
  2. Enable accessibility options if needed
  3. Select a keyboard layout, we are using English (US)
  4. Don't connect to the internet yet
  5. Install Ubuntu
  6. Interactive Installation
  7. Default selection of applications
  8. Install recommended proprietary software
  9. Erase disk and Install ubuntu
  10. Create account
  11. Select Timezone
  12. Review and Confirm Choices.

Step 2: Configure the Network

  1. Navigate to settings
  2. Network -> Wired -> click the + button
  3. Navigate to IPv4
    • Change IPv4 Method to Manual
    • Add an IP address, netmask and gateway
    • I added 8.8.8.8 as a dns just to start with.

Testing Connectivity

Step 1: Testing in-network connectivity

  1. In the terminal ping -c 1 the default gateway.

  1. For fun I'm going to edit /etc/hosts and add my Kali IP
  2. In the terminal ping -c 1 Kali1-Sullivan

My Ubuntu Box can ping the default gateway and my Kali Box.

Step 2: Testing Out-of-network connectivity

  1. ping -c 1 google.com

Changing Computer Name in Ubuntu

Settings -> System -> Device Name
