FieldCraft v0.7.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 18 Oct 10:26
Immutable release. Only release title and notes can be modified.

FieldCraft is open-source CAE pre-processing in Rust: it turns geometry into analysis-ready
finite element models, writes Abaqus, Nastran and LS-DYNA decks, and solves linear static and
modal problems with its own solver. AI agents can drive it over MCP (fieldcraft-cli mcp).

What's new in 0.7.0: agentic hex meshing (#AHM)

0.7.0 is the meshing release: an agent (or you) looks at the part, plans the blocks from how it was built, and gets an all-hex mesh, then checks and repairs it.

  • Block plans from the feature graph. geometry.features replays a SolidCraft design's timeline; mesh.plan turns it into blocks (O-grid/butterfly rings round holes and bosses, swept and projected cells) and mesh.plan.apply meshes them. Symmetric bodies are meshed by their symmetry and mirrored, conforming on the plane.
  • Sizing. Local size controls on faces, bodies, boxes and spheres with a growth rate (mesh.size.*), honoured by every mesher; curvature-based divisions so curved faces lose at most 0.5 % of volume.
  • Clean-up before meshing. geometry.check finds short edges, slivers and near faces; geometry.defeature suppresses holes, fillets and bosses (with a proposal panel); virtual topology merges, absorbs, splits and stitches faces.
  • Quality and repair. mesh.quality.mark tags the bad elements in red; strong relaxation morphs the region round them (now a background job, adjustable reach and guards) and returns its best round; new Move Nodes tool to drag nodes on the surface with a ghost of the original and live quality.
  • More meshers. Octree all-hex for parts a block plan does not suit; hex-to-tet transitions with pyramids; tet sliver and needle removal; the same mesh on every run and every platform.
  • Responsive app. Plan apply, partitioning and cell meshing run as background jobs with progress and cancel.
  • Fluid. A GPU backend for the lattice Boltzmann solver (wgpu, checked against the CPU), velocity, pressure and temperature slices, surface colouring and streamlines, heat carried by the flow with buoyancy and the heat into every wall.
  • Verification. Scordelis–Lo roof and pinched cylinder shell benchmarks join the reference cases.

Thank you to @bluecmd for the GPU lattice Boltzmann backend, the flow results view, heat in the flow and a careful Windows test pass, and to @erkinalp for the shell benchmarks.

    shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS.txt --ignore-missing).

To start with a sample model, run the app with --sample cantilever (macOS:
/Applications/FieldCraft.app/Contents/MacOS/FieldCraft --sample cantilever).

Full Changelog: v0.5.4...v0.5.5

FieldCraft 0.5.4: Picking, release builds and tet quality

Choose a tag to compare

@jyviko jyviko released this 14 Oct 13:55

FieldCraft 0.5.4: Picking, release builds and tet quality

Selection by picking in the viewport (faces, edges, vertices, bodies, nodes, elements) feeding sets, supports and loads; release builds for macOS, Linux and Windows; tet mesh quality (one validity criterion for mesher and solvers, refinement, smoothing, sliver removal, tet10); community setup and branch protection.

This is a milestone on FieldCraft's history, tagged after the fact: it has no binaries, and its code reports version 0.1.0. Build it from source at this tag (git checkout v0.5.4), or download the latest release.

Changes

  • community: CODEOWNERS, issue and PR templates, code of conduct, claiming issues; CI on pull requests from forks
  • AGENTS.md: main is protected; the core team merges with --admin, contributors wait for review
  • README: the partitioned all-hex bracket with images, the nonlinear solver and materials, setup symbols, how to help
  • issue forms: observed failure, reproduction, evidence, expected behaviour, investigation
  • cli: fieldcraft-cli --version
  • app: reverse-DNS app id and the Windows executable icon
  • packaging: macOS app and dmg, Linux tar.gz and AppImage, Windows zip
  • ci: release workflow drafting a GitHub Release, and docs/releasing.md
  • render: watertight ray picking, element face ids and an overlay layer
  • ui-egui: select faces, edges, vertices, bodies, nodes and elements by picking
  • control: ui.select on the viewport and ui.selection
  • mcp: select and selection tools for the app's viewport selection
  • docs: the literature survey names FieldCraft
  • Tet mesh quality: one validity criterion, Delaunay refinement, ODT, Klingner–Shewchuk, tet10

FieldCraft 0.5.3: Octree all-hex

Choose a tag to compare

@jyviko jyviko released this 14 Oct 13:55

FieldCraft 0.5.3: Octree all-hex

Unstructured all-hex meshing of any part by octree (mesh.hex.octree), verified on the filleted bracket.

This is a milestone on FieldCraft's history, tagged after the fact: it has no binaries, and its code reports version 0.1.0. Build it from source at this tag (git checkout v0.5.3), or download the latest release.

Changes

  • mesh: unstructured all-hex octree mesher
  • engine: mesh.hex.octree command
  • oracle: filleted L-bracket on the octree all-hex mesh
  • testkit: octree hex column in the meshing corpus

FieldCraft 0.5.2: Plasticity and rubber

Choose a tag to compare

@jyviko jyviko released this 14 Oct 13:55

FieldCraft 0.5.2: Plasticity and rubber

J2 plasticity in the implicit solver at small and finite strain (one return map shared with explicit dynamics), Mooney–Rivlin and Yeoh rubber, thermal strain in nonlinear steps, load paths; verified against Hill's thick cylinder, the Bauschinger effect and Treloar-type tests.

This is a milestone on FieldCraft's history, tagged after the fact: it has no binaries, and its code reports version 0.1.0. Build it from source at this tag (git checkout v0.5.2), or download the latest release.

Changes

  • fem: J2 plasticity at the implicit material point, finite and small strain
  • model: load paths of nonlinear static steps
  • solver: J2 plasticity in nonlinear static steps, finite and small strain
  • verification: implicit plasticity oracle cases and documentation
  • fem, model: Mooney-Rivlin and Yeoh hyperelasticity in nonlinear steps
  • fem, solver: thermal strain in nonlinear static steps
  • verification: hyperelastic and thermal oracle cases and documentation
  • oracle: docs/oracle.md reads the same after a blessing run, so main's freshness check passes

FieldCraft 0.5.1: Partitioned all-hex

Choose a tag to compare

@jyviko jyviko released this 14 Oct 13:55

FieldCraft 0.5.1: Partitioned all-hex

Conforming multi-block hex meshing of a part split into cells (mesh.hex.blocks); the filleted bracket meshed all-hex from 30 SolidCraft cells, within 0.1 % of a fine tet10 solution.

This is a milestone on FieldCraft's history, tagged after the fact: it has no binaries, and its code reports version 0.1.0. Build it from source at this tag (git checkout v0.5.1), or download the latest release.

Changes

  • hex: conforming multi-block meshes of partitioned parts
  • mesh.hex.blocks: one conforming hex mesh of a design split into blocks
  • render: the bodies of a design with several in their own colours
  • corpus: the filleted bracket partitioned into 30 blocks, meshed all-hex
