v1.4.0

An independent, open-source Android app to control Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 — fully offline: no Google Play services needed, no INTERNET permission, no location permission, no account.

Features: noise control (Noise cancellation, Adaptive, Transparency, Off) and a Quick Settings tile, switched on the app's own channel — a press-and-hold on a bud shows in the app at once, on any tab ("Changed by the Buds" in the details) · equalizer with presets and Volume EQ · battery Left/Right (with charging), the Case and a "probably worn" line · Find My Buds (ring Left, Right or both) · touch controls, press and hold per bud and its noise-control modes · head gestures, Multipoint, conversation detection, in-ear detection · balance (finer near the centre), mono audio · case sounds and dark mode on gear → Settings · firmware and serial numbers on gear → Info.

Not included: ringing the Case, firmware updates, choosing the devices of a multipoint connection, anything that needs a Google account.

Requirements: Android 14 (API 34) or newer. Tested on a Pixel 9a with GrapheneOS (Android 17) and Buds firmware release_5.203 only. On any other firmware the app opens in read-only Safe Mode and sends no setting changes.

Install: download opencontrol-pixelbudspro2-1.4.0.apk below, allow "Install unknown apps" for your browser or file manager, and open the file. Updates: install a newer APK from the Releases page over the old one — it is signed with the same key, so your settings stay. The app never checks for updates itself.

Verify the download:

  • SHA-256 of the APK: 2f75ad86273ac04d27ab57f2b0a8c95d56d4a1af8e17b8136108fc20cd511172

Changes: see CHANGELOG.md. Third-party licences: THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt below.

Known issues in 1.4.0 (hardware run CAP-079; fixes are prepared for 1.4.1):

  • "Stopped on the bud" does not appear: the app listens for the Buds' stop for at most 20 s, but they ring about a minute when nothing is touched — "Ringing …" stays until you tap Stop.
  • In the user with Google Play services, Play takes the shared channel back about 5 s into a ring; the app then keeps "Ringing …" until you tap Stop. A Ring can collide with Play's claim (it then usually works at the second attempt).
  • The red "The Buds don't allow changing noise control right now …" line can stay after the Buds allow a change again (until a mode tap or Refresh).
  • Three texts still describe 1.3.x: the noise-control card's "Tapping a mode checks again first", the battery details' "Message Stream" line, and Find's "Each action briefly claims …".
  • After the Buds' own close of the session the mode shown can be a few seconds old until the re-open's read.

Risk: this app sends reverse-engineered commands to your earbuds; use it at your own risk (see the README's "Safety and Safe Mode").
