Real Steel — Linux v1.0

First release of the native Linux port of Yuke's Real Steel (Xbox 360 XBLA, title ID 584111E0), recompiled with the ReXGlue SDK and shipped with the bespoke Factual Metal Launcher.

Status: playable. Tested end-to-end on the development machine (import from the original .rar archive → play): menus, robot builder, and fights all working, with sound and gamepad.

Downloads

  • RealSteel-x86_64-v1.0.AppImage — the launcher + game program in one file. Just run it.
  • RealSteel-Linux-v1.0.zip — the same AppImage plus a README.txt.

No game data is included in either file, and none is downloaded. You supply your own legally obtained XBLA package of Real Steel (the STFS package for title 584111E0) — the launcher's import accepts the package file directly, or a .rar / .zip / .7z archive containing it (a 7-Zip binary is bundled for that).

First run

  1. Run the AppImage.
  2. Click "Import XBLA package or archive..." and pick your package or archive; choose where the game data lives.
  3. Click PLAY.

Notes & known issues

  • Vsync defaults to OFF in this launcher, on purpose. With the SDK's vsync emulation on, fights ran at ½–⅓ speed (slow motion) while menus ran full speed; the frame-rate limit still paces the game. This is the single biggest performance fix in this port — leave it off unless experimenting.
  • Built on Ubuntu 26.04: needs glibc 2.43 or newer. A future build from the Ubuntu 24.04 toolchain will widen distro compatibility.
  • Online versus is stubbed (offline build) — single player and local play work.
  • DLC fighters were separate downloads on the Xbox 360 and are not part of the base package, so those roster slots stay locked unless your data includes them.
  • One tiny black-rectangle glyph on the first-run "create game data" dialog — matches the "small texture issues" upstream Xenia shows for this title.
  • If the game fails to start after a crash, delete stale xenia_memory_* files from /dev/shm and run it again.

Credits & licensing

This project's own code is BSD 3-Clause (see LICENSE), matching the ReXGlue SDK it stands on. Full attribution for every library and tool used — ReXGlue SDK, Xenia, Qt (LGPLv3), 7-Zip (LGPL), AMD FidelityFX (MIT), FFmpeg (LGPLv2.1), SDL (zlib) and more — is in CREDITS.md and licenses/ in the repo, and inside the AppImage under usr/share/licenses/realsteel/.

Real Steel is © Yuke's / DreamWorks / Microsoft. This is a fan-made compatibility project; no game data, artwork, or other assets from the original game are distributed.

Real Steel Windows test build (pre-release)

Real Steel — Windows test build (PRE-RELEASE)

This is a test build looking for reports from real Windows machines. It is not yet a verified Windows release.

The Linux build is done and verified — if you're on Linux, you want v1.0 instead. This pre-release exists to answer one question: does the Windows build run correctly on native Windows hardware? (Under Proton it currently crashes for the maintainer; that may be a Proton/VKD3D issue rather than an app issue — native reports are how we find out.)

What's in the zip

The Factual Metal Launcher (TPFactualMetalLauncher.exe), the game program (realsteel.exe + runtime DLLs), a bundled official 7-Zip for archive import, and the license/credits pack. No game data is included — you supply your own legally obtained XBLA package of Real Steel (STFS package for title 584111E0, or a .rar / .zip / .7z archive containing it).

How to test

  1. Unzip anywhere and run TPFactualMetalLauncher.exe.
  2. Click "Import XBLA package or archive...", pick your package or archive, choose a data folder.
  3. Click PLAY. Play through the menus, the robot builder, and at least one fight.

Please report

Open an issue (or tell the person who sent you here) with:

  • Result: how far you got — launcher opened? import worked? game played? a full fight?
  • Your setup: Windows version, GPU + driver version, controller used.
  • If it crashed or failed: at what step, and the log from your data folder (logs\ — especially last-command.txt and the game log).

Even a simple "worked fine on Windows 11, RTX 4070" is a useful report.

Known notes

  • Vsync defaults to OFF in this launcher, on purpose (fights run in slow motion with the SDK's vsync emulation on; the frame-rate limit still paces the game).
  • Online versus is stubbed — offline build; single player and local play only.
  • DLC fighters were separate Xbox 360 downloads and aren't in the base package, so those roster slots stay locked.
  • Credits & licensing: project code is BSD 3-Clause; full attribution in CREDITS.md / licenses\ in the zip and in the repo. Real Steel is © Yuke's / DreamWorks / Microsoft; no game assets are distributed.
