material-lab 1.1.0

@theisegoria theisegoria released this 07 Oct 01:29

39 material presets, 11 export targets, and your own maps.

brew update && brew upgrade material-lab

Material presets. Start from a tuned recipe instead of a bare prior: --preset red-brick, wood-planks, concrete, polished-marble, bark, gravel, denim, leather, brushed-steel, rusted-steel, copper, plastic and more. --list-presets shows them all (--json for scripts). Bundles record the preset you started from.

More export targets. Alongside glTF, USDZ, Unreal, Unity HDRP, Godot and Blender:

  • materialx: a MaterialX standard_surface for Houdini, Maya, Blender, USD and Omniverse
  • unity: Unity URP and Built-in (metallic with smoothness in alpha)
  • substance: maps named for Substance 3D Painter and Designer
  • roblox: SurfaceAppearance maps (at most 1024²)
  • minecraft-labpbr: a LabPBR 1.3 resource pack for Iris and OptiFine shaders

--list-formats describes each one.

Bring your own maps. --authored marks a hand-painted albedo. --height-map, --normal-map (--normal-map-dx for DirectX), --roughness-map, --ao-map and --metalness-map replace the estimate with your artwork. An authored normal map also drives height, AO and the masks. Each authored input is recorded in the manifest by name and hash.

The derivation itself is unchanged (core 1.4.0). Apple Silicon, macOS 15 or later. Developer ID signed, not notarized.

@theisegoria theisegoria released this 05 Oct 22:59

Fixes --learned when material-lab is run from your PATH, including every Homebrew install: 1.0.0 looked for the bundled MoGe-2 model relative to the current directory and reported "no MoGe-2 model found". 1.0.1 locates its own executable, so the bundled model is always found.

brew update && brew upgrade material-lab

The Homebrew formula's test now checks that --learned finds the model. No changes to derivation output (core 1.4.0).

@theisegoria theisegoria released this 05 Oct 22:37

The first release of material-lab, the free command-line companion to Material Lab for Mac and Material Capture for iPhone. Turn a photograph into an editable set of PBR texture maps, entirely on your Mac.

Install with Homebrew

brew tap theisegoria/material-lab-cli https://github.com/theisegoria/material-lab-cli
brew trust theisegoria/material-lab-cli # Homebrew 7 asks you to trust third-party taps once
brew install material-lab

Or download material-lab-1.0.0-macos-arm64.tar.gz below (check it against the .sha256). Requires an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 15 or later. The binary is Developer ID signed but not yet notarized: after a browser download, run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine material-lab-1.0.0-macos-arm64 once.

What it does

  • Derives albedo, 16-bit height, normal, roughness, ambient occlusion, cavity, convexity, slope and edge maps, with an optional bent normal and ORM, from one photo. About 0.1 s for a 1K material on Apple silicon.
  • --learned runs the bundled MoGe-2 geometry model on the Neural Engine, so recesses like mortar and grout read the right way round.
  • --repair-albedo auto rebuilds the photo so it tiles, cutting along the least visible seam.
  • --export / --also-export to glb, usdz, unreal, unity-hdrp, godot and blender.
  • Catalog batches with --jobs and --report, --watch folders, recipe files and recipes saved in the Material Lab Mac app.
  • --info, --contact-sheet and --diff to inspect any bundle; --validate to check one.
  • No account and no network: everything runs locally.

Every derived map is an estimate from one photograph, and each bundle records exactly how it was made. man material-lab documents every option.
