Turbo
The Turbo mechanic in Band BoomBox gives you a significant advantage during gameplay by dramatically increasing your score multiplier (also known as momentum) gain. It is useful in both single-player and multiplayer modes, and it becomes increasingly more powerful the more players activate it simultaneously.
As you successfully hit notes perfectly during a song, you will build up Turbo energy in your Energy Meter, located on the left side of the Gameplay screen. Note that during multiplayer games, all players use a single combined Turbo Energy Meter.
Turbo can be activated at any time during a song, provided that the Energy Meter is not empty, by pressing the Turbo button.
- Controller: Mapped to Select.
- Keyboard: Typically mapped to Space Bar, but this can be changed in the options menu.
When activated, you'll immediately see a visual flair change to your note highway's background. Turbo will remain active until your Energy Meter is empty, at which point it will automatically deactivate. You can also manually deactivate Turbo at any time by pressing the Turbo button again, though this will result in a small penalty to your remaining energy.
Instead of activating Turbo manually, it is also possible to have Turbo automatically activate by using the Auto Turbo option. This will cause Turbo to activate automatically once the Energy meter is completely full. This is recommended for new and casual players, as well as anyone who prefers to focus purely on hitting the notes without worrying about Turbo management. Each player can toggle the Auto Turbo setting on the Player Join screen. Look for the "Auto Turbo" option to switch it "On" or "Off" depending on your preference.
NOTE: Even with Auto Turbo enabled, you can still manually activate or deactivate Turbo at any time by pressing the Turbo button.
NOTE: Auto Turbo is enabled by default for new player profiles as well as guests.
The main benefit of using Turbo is a significantly increased momentum gain, allowing your team to rack up a massive score multiplier much faster. The more players activate Turbo simultaneously, the higher the momentum gain rate will be. This rate is displayed above the Energy meter, on the left side of the gameplay screen.
Turbo also unlocks the ability to earn Crit Hits while active. These demand even tighter timing precision than Perfect hits, and provide even more momentum for being exactly on the beat. In addition, Crit Hits also provide more Ally Boost ticks than Perfect hits, allowing you to generate Ally Boost Tokens faster than normal.
NOTE: Turbo does not have any impact on competitive play or your individual score. It only benefits the collective team score and multipliers.
