v1.8.0

  • Added option to allow or disallow Autoplay during Network Games.
  • Added three indicator icons to the currently selected song in the Song Select screen: "New" (shown if song has no team high score), "Multi" (shown if song has multiple chart groups), "Broken" (shown if song has failed to load).
  • Tweaked individual high scores to favour Performance Points instead of Performance Percent (useful if a chart is modified to have more notes after a high score is saved)
  • Fixed menu item display issue when changing chart groups in Difficulty Select Screen.
  • Fixed menu scrolling incorrectly when it is scaled down (typically when more than 4 players are present).
  • ACE: Improved Clamp Notes to Current Difficulty transform option, especially to Mild (avoids excessive Down or A Notes)

v1.7.4

Note that players updating from older versions are encouraged to keep using the separate downloads instead, in order to avoid issues that can occur when having duplicate songs in different song folders.
  • Song favourites are now supported in Network Games! During a Network game, the song list will now show favourites for local players as well as remote players.
  • Fixed NPS graph being incorrect during gameplay and in Editor when a song chart contains empty regions.
  • Added Auto Difficulty option to chart list in Editor, which automatically populates suggested difficulty ratings for all charts based on Trimmed Average NPS.
  • Added background to Credits screen, and refactored the song credits to populate from a JSON file instead of being hard-coded.
  • Fixed incorrect ordering of difficulties on Song Select screen, when a song has all seven difficulties.
  • Song issues are now displayed on the Difficulty Select screen, if applicable.
  • ACE: Added "Note Clap" feature, which plays a clap sound effect for every note during playback, to assist with timing. The timing of the sound effect can be adjusted by changing its offset in the Editor Options menu.

v1.7.3

  • Added a special ending screen, shown to those players that manage to reach the maximum experience level (50). Once shown, this screen can be accessed later from the Options menu.

  • Fixed rival EXP bonuses not being awarded correctly during Network play, when a player's rival is playing with them.
  • Added page for Mild difficulty in How to Play screen
  • Although Ally Boosts are still not functional during Network games, they can now be accumulated. Each player's current Ally Boost tokens are now displayed on the Player list during gameplay.

  • Added one more secret code.
  • Lane Order player option no longer requires a secret code to unlock.
  • Network Player screen can now display public (WAN) IP address as well as LAN IP addresses.

v1.7.0

  • Replaced Goal Meter with Pace Display during gameplay. This shows the performance of each player relative to their goal, and their personal best for the current chart.
  • Added basic support for Rivals. To enable this, select a profile to use as your rival in the Player Join screen. Once selected, your performance relative to your rival will be displayed on the Pace Display during gameplay (as "RB").

  • Fixed crash on startup when loading a song with a blank chart, and several bugs in the ACE when loading a blank chart.
  • Added a new Player High Score list on the Song Select screen, which now shows the best result for all local profiles for the selected song. Press Turbo to toggle between Team and individual player high scores.

  • Fixed MAX_BINDINGS_FOR_ACTION being serialized to controls.json despite being a constant.

  • Significantly updated the difficulty ratings for all charts included in the game, as well as the Official Song Collection.

  • Added a failsafe when a selecting a song with missing or corrupted audio, which typically occurs if files in the Songs folder are moved or deleted while the game is running. In such cases, the game will return to the Song Select screen, and mark the affected song as unavailable until the game is restarted.
  • Fixed overlap on the difficulty display on the Song Select screen if a song has more than five charts.
  • Added a new "Auto Turbo" player option. When enabled, Turbo will be activated automatically once the energy meter is full. This can be enabled or disabled per player. Note that even when this option is enabled, it is still possible to activate or deactivate Turbo manually using the Turbo button (default is Select on controller, or Space on keyboard).
  • Fixed Full Combo animation sprite not being masked correctly on Player 3's note highway (and possibly other players).
  • Fixed Long Range Radar bar sprites not being masked correctly and drawing on top of the multiplier meter.
  • Added the numeric difficulty level to the Results screen, for both local and network players.
  • Chart Editor: Chart list now displays the average NPS for each chart.

  • ACE: Improved "Invert" and "Rotate 90 Degrees" transform options when charting Mild difficulty charts.

v1.6.0

  • Fixed note preview icons being displayed above the top of the menu when scrolling through options in the Player Join Screen.
  • ACE: Replaced "Remove all notes except current step" with "Ensure Minimum Spacing". This is a more useful version of the same idea that works better with charts that are off-beat.
  • Added new "Mild" difficulty (name subject to change), a difficulty that slots in between Medium and Hard, featuring six button gameplay. Note that none of the included songs have this difficulty charted yet.
  • Hard difficulty is now coloured orange on the Song Select and Difficulty Select screens.
  • Upgraded song "issues" display on Song Select screen to be harder to miss. It is now also hidden for songs that have no issues.

v1.5.5

  • Fixed a crash that occurs when playing more than one song.
  • Added "Flawless" section result, awarded when every note in a section is hit perfectly. Note that for balance reasons, this result does not award a higher bonus than a "Superb" result.
  • The Pause menu can now be accessed during Network Games, and includes two new options specifically for Network games: "Disconnect" and "Abort Song"
    • "Disconnect" allows non-host players to leave the session mid-song, and return to the Main Menu.
    • "Abort Song" allows the host to end the current song prematurely, and return everyone to the Song Select screen.
  • During gameplay, hitting an input mapped to the top lane (LB, RB, etc), will no longer be penalized with a WRONG judgement if the top lane has no notes.
  • Fixed section result graphic remaining visible for P2 after the animation completes.
  • During Network games, if only one player is not ready, their name is now displayed on the Song Select screen.
  • ACE: Added auto-save functionality, to prevent loss of data. The frequency can be adjusted in the editor's Options menu, or disabled entirely.

v1.5.4

  • Added a new set of note labels: "Arrows". Note: It is recommended to disable "Auto Set Note Labels" on the Options Screen if this is your preferred setting.
  • LAN IP Addresses are now hidden by default on the Network Play screen. They can be shown by pressing Blue (X).
  • Added lane reordering option, to change the order of the three lanes on the Note Highway. This option must be unlocked with a secret code.
  • Added a fade out effect for song audio with long outros. This takes effect on the Evaluation screen.

  • Added a display for the selected song on the Difficulty Select screen.
  • Fixed turbo scrolling background effect scrolling inconsistently when Momentum Scroll Speed is enabled.
  • Added a minimum scroll speed (200) when Momentum Scroll Speed is enabled.

v1.5.3

  • Added "Section Bonus" mechanic. Performance during a song is now tracked per song section (such as "Verse", "Chorus" etc). At the end of each section, players are awarded bonus score multiplier based on how well they performed during that section. The maximum bonus awarded is +1 to multiplier per section, per player, for a "Superb" result, with worse results awarding less.
  • Section results are now shown on the Results screen for each player. Press Right on this screen to display it.
  • Added a "Strict" mode to Section Bonuses to make earning them more challenging. This mode must be unlocked using a secret code on the Title Screen.
  • Added new sprite for indicating when Ally Boosts are disabled for a player.
  • Improved the Boosts stats display on the Results screen. It now uses icons to denote boosts provided, received and left over, and will be hidden entirely if ally boosts have been turned off.
  • Added ability to reset keyboard bindings to their defaults from the Keyboard Options menu (using the mouse).
  • Added animation to score Multiplier meter during gameplay. Any changes to the current multiplier are now shown gradually.

v1.5.2

IMPORTANT SECURITY UPDATE. This version updates the Unity engine to 2022.3.62f2. This resolves a high severity security vulnerability affecting all Unity games built with versions 2017 or newer. There should be no user-visible changes to the game itself. For more information, see: https://unity.com/security/sept-2025-01/remediation

v1.5.1

  • Up to three players can now play on a single machine in network games, increased from two.
  • Fixed crash in Network Games when multiple local players are present, and one is playing on Keyboard.
  • Fixed scoring not working when joining a network game, leaving, then starting a local game.

v1.5.0

  • This version introduces support for six local players on a single machine! Although only four player slots will be visible initially on the Player Join Screen, more are shown as player 4 and 5 join the game.
  • Added unique "Menu Cancelled" menu sound effects for all players, and new "Menu Confirmed" sound effects for player 5 and 6.

v1.4.2

  • Added "Long Range Radar" display to the main gameplay screen. This displays a NPS (Notes Per Second) bar chart of the current and upcoming sections of the song during gameplay. Enabled by default when there are 1 or 2 players present, but can be disabled in the Options Screen.
  • Added "Max NPS" statistic to the Note Counts display in the Difficulty Select screen. This can be viewed by pressing Blue (X) on this screen. "NPS" has been renamed to "Average NPS" for clarity.
  • Added "Ally Boost" mechanic, specifically for multiplayer games. Ally Boosts can be used to assist other players by "boosting" their COOL hits into PERFECT hits a limited number of times per song. This can be disabled per player in the Player Join Screen. Note that Ally Boosts are not supported for Network Games, and therefore will be disabled automatically when playing a Network Game.
  • Fixed the note highway graphic not displaying correctly for P2 to P4 on the Note Counts display.
  • Fixed being unable to join a local game using the keyboard when P1 has been assigned to a controller.
  • Added "Accuracy" statistic to Evaluation Screen, as an alternative to Deviation. To toggle between the two, press Yellow (Y).

v1.4.1

  • Added a new "Calibration" screen to help with setting the Audio Latency setting accurately. This screen functions similarly to the Fine Tune page in the Song Editor, but adjusts the global Audio Latency instead of a specific song's offset. It can be accessed under Options -> Audio -> Calibration.
  • Added sorting the song list by difficulty (Beginner, Medium, Hard, Expert) to the Song Select Screen.
  • Added a setting in Settings.json to change the path where player profiles are located.
  • Added a "Full Combo" animation to the Note Highways that triggers at the end of a song, for players that achieve any type of Full Combo.
  • Fixed Controls.json file not saving to the correct location on Linux systems.
  • Fixed "Open Logs Folder" (in Advanced Options) not working on Linux systems (due to the path starting with "~")

v1.4.0

  • This update introduces customizable keyboard controls! However, this comes with some major limitations, namely:
    • Only keyboard controls can be customized. Controller controls will still use the default controls.
    • There is no way to change keyboard controls in-game (yet). These must be changed by modifying the Controls.json file in your Save Data folder.
    • Although the controls can be changed, note labels will still show the default WASD icons during gameplay. It is recommended to change note labels to "None" on the Player Join screen when using customized keyboard controls. Commonly used alternate layouts may be added as selectable note labels in the future.
    • The How To Play Screen now shows the default keyboard controls (and has been updated to indicate this).
    • The Keyboard tab on the Options screen now shows the current keyboard controls.
  • Semi-Full Combos are now displayed in orange text instead of red.
  • Added "Auto Set Note Labels" option, under the Gameplay tab. If enabled, the player's note labels will be set automatically based on their current controller. This is the default, and matches the behaviour of previous versions of Band BoomBox. If disabled, Note Labels will be loaded from the player's profile instead. This is useful when a player prefers using a note labels setting that doesn't match their controller.
  • Added "Default Keyboard Note Labels" option, under the Gameplay tab. This sets the default note labels setting that should be used for keyboard players (assuming "Auto Set Note Labels" is On), and is useful for keyboard players using customized controls.
  • Network Play: It is now possible to cancel a selected song while on the Difficulty Select Screen and return everyone to the Song Select Screen. Only the host is allowed to do this.
  • Network Play: If a player leaves while everyone is on the Difficulty Select Screen, the game will now start if everyone else is ready.

v1.3.3

  • In Network games, when the player whose turn it is to choose the next song leaves the game, the current turn will move to the next player. This fixes an issue where a player leaving a Network game could render the session unplayable for the remaining players.
  • Moved the Turbo Energy meter to the left edge of the screen to make it easier to monitor.
  • Changed the Turbo Energy meter's colour scheme to better match the rest of the UI. It also now pulses when Turbo is activated by any player.
  • Added a new sound effect when a remote player activates Turbo in a Network game.
  • Team High Scores are now displayed correctly when a player joins or leaves in a Network game.
  • Enabled preloading for all menu music audio. This fixes menu music being out of sync when moving between game scenes.
  • Updated text explanations for some Player Options in Player Join Screen.
  • Note Highway Impact zone glyphs are now dynamic. They will use a different mid lane glyph when playing on Beginner difficulty, and only show the top lane glyph if there is at least one note in the top lane (or for certain difficulties in the ACE).
  • Fixed issue where one player cannot hit any notes in a Network game. This could theoretically occur for any number of players, but was most common in games where two or more machines have two local players each.
  • Fixed player duplication bug on clients when their second local player leaves in a Network game (again).

v1.3.2

  • This release includes several fixes for Network games, namely:
    • Fixed not being able to play a Network game with 3 or more players due to player list corruption.
    • Reworked "Turns" Song Selection logic for Network games. Current turn is now incremented when leaving the Difficulty Select Screen.
    • Reworked how the current song select turn is propagated to clients in Network games. This fixes the Song Select screen not displaying who should pick the next song when Song Selection is set to Turns.
    • Turns Song Selection mode now provides turns in descending Net ID order, to prevent the host from getting two turns in a row.
    • Fixed rankings including late joined players, which aren't participating in the current song, in Gameplay and Evaluation screen.
    • Fixed IsParticipating flag not being cleared correctly when leaving a Network game. This fixes late-joined players having a score percentage despite not participating in the current song.
    • Fixed server settings (such as Max Players) not being propagated to clients in a Network game.
    • Fixed Network player list not showing N.E.R.F. difficulty correctly.
  • Fixed Extra Difficulty not being unlocked by default for new installations of the game. For existing installations, the current state will be loaded from the settings.json file.
  • ACE: Added 4 beat and 2 beat step sizes.
  • ACE: Note counts are now incremented/decremented when a note is added/removed.
  • Full Combos are now saved to Team High Scores and displayed as such on the Song Select Screen. Fixed Max Combo text colour when no Team High Score exists for a song.

v1.3.1

  • Fixed being able to change the selected song during a screen transition on the Song Select screen, which causes the wrong preview music to play on the Difficulty Select screen. This is especially noticeable in Network games, but affects local play as well.
  • Fixed Full Combos not being displayed on the Evaluation Screen's player list in Network games.
  • Added a check when joining a Network game to ensure that the client and server are running the same game version.
  • Added NPS (Notes Per Second) to the note counts display on the Difficulty Select screen and in ACE.
  • New graphics for note counts display on the Difficulty Select screen and in ACE.

v1.3.0

  • This update adds a third free playable song to the game ("Lightseeker"), included in the main release! This new song demonstrates the Chart Group functionality available in Band BoomBox, by having two groups of four charts each, for a total of eight. In multiplayer games, each player is free to choose any chart from any group in the Difficulty Select screen.
  • Added a new variant of the menu music tune, used on the Network Play Screen.
  • Improved Create Profile page on the Player Join Screen. Moved numbers and symbols to separate line item to make selecting them (and letters) easier.
    • B (red) button now acts as backspace if entered text is not empty, and Cancel if it is.
    • Y (yellow) button now acts as Space. Added icons to indicate the above.
  • Fixed player status not being updated correctly in Network games when a player enters the Create Profile page.
  • Fixed all frames showing as P1 in Difficulty Select screen.
  • Added a Bar Chart to the Evaluation screen to display Momentum over the course of the song.
  • ACE: Refresh note counts when using any "Modify Selected Region" command, or when pasting from the clipboard.
  • Fixed SongCharts cloned in the Song Editor having no note counts.

v1.2.5

  • Full Combos, Semi Full Combos and Perfect Full Combos are now recorded to individual player scores, and will display as such when viewing individual high scores on the Song Select screen and Difficulty Select screen. Note that this will only apply to Full Combos earned after this update.
  • Added scale markings to Energy Meter to better indicate its capacity, since this changes depending on the number of players.
  • Evaluation screen now uses correct Sfx for players 2 to 4.
  • Added note counts for charts. Note counts are populated when a chart is saved in the Editor. For songs without note counts, these will be calculated and saved automatically when the game starts up.
  • Note counts are now displayed for the selected chart in the Difficulty Select screen (Press X / Blue button to toggle) and in the ACE.
  • ACE: Added the ability to add AnyB, AnyD and AnyT notes (beginner notes) to any chart, provided that Allow Any Note Types is enabled. On keyboard, hold Ctrl then press a corresponding note key (1 to 0). On controller, hold LT and press a note button or direction.
  • ACE: Added the ability to add LT or RT notes to a chart using a controller. Hold LT and press either LB or RB for LT or RT respectively.
  • ACE: Fixed being unable to hit AnyB, AnyD or AnyT notes (beginner notes) during playback.

v1.2.4

  • The main focus of this update is upgrading the version of the Unity engine that Band BoomBox runs on, from 2021.2 to 2022.3 LTS. There should be no noticeable changes to gameplay.
  • Fixed crash when selecting a song that doesn't have a "Main" chart group.
  • Profiles list in the Player Join screen is now sorted by when they last played, with the most recent players being shown first.
  • Added secret code to enable Extra difficulty in-game if it has been disabled somehow. To enable it, press Down, Down, Down on the title screen before pressing Start or Enter.
  • Player Join screen: Added a shortcut to select the [Guest] option in the profiles list: Yellow button (Y)
  • Evaluation screen now shows Chart Group as well as difficulty (if the player's Chart Group isn't "Main")
  • Fixed "Ready" state not being displayed in Evaluation frames when wide frames are used (1-2 players)
  • Fixed Turbo note highway background animation not scrolling correctly in 4 player games.
  • Player Join Screen: Renamed "Momentum" to "Momentum Speed" to be more clear.
  • Gameplay screen: Player name labels on the note highways are now much larger and harder to miss.

v1.2.3

  • This update introduces a new option to Song Selection in Network play: Turns. With this option, players will take turns choosing the next song, and not be allowed to select a song unless its their turn.
  • Added a check to prevent players from selecting a song that the server doesn't have in Network play. This will be expanded later to check that all players in the current session have the selected song.
  • Fixed player duplication bug when P2 leaves and rejoins in a network game.
  • Fixed EXP bonus for a large number of players.

v1.2.2

  • This update includes numerous fixes and improvements for Network play, including:
    • Renamed "Play Online" to "Network Play" in the main menu to better indicate its intended use.
    • Completely revamped Network Play menu to be controller friendly as much as possible.

    • Added sound effects when a player joins or leaves a network game.
    • Fixed stars not being calculated correctly in network games. Also fixed currently earned stars not being synced during a network game.

  • Fixed EXP % bonuses not being formatted correctly on Evaluation screen.
  • ACE: Release notes can now be moved by placing another Release note before or after it on the same lane.
  • Fixed the game not starting up if settings.json file is corrupt.

v1.2.0

  • Introducing LAN multiplayer! This allows multiple machines on the same local network to play together.
    • Games with more than 4 players are supported! The default maximum is 8, but this can be increased up to 32 if desired.
    • Up to two players can participate on each machine (6 players on 3 machines, etc).
    • Although online play is theoretically possible, this is not officially supported and has not been tested.
    • Note that this feature is highly experimental. Feel free to have fun, but expect plenty of bugs, unfinished features and other strange behaviour. Bug reports and contributions to fix network multiplayer bugs are welcome.
  • Added confirmation message when selecting a N.E.R.F. difficulty chart for the first time.
  • Added new menu sound effects for player 2, and unique "selection confirmed" sound effects for each local player.
  • Slightly reduced the requirements for 7 stars when playing with 2 or more players.
  • Evaluation screen now displays the ranking (1st, 2nd, etc) for each player.

v1.1.0

  • Introducing N.E.R.F. (Not Even Remotely Fair) difficulty! This insane difficulty level features twelve button gameplay (including RT and LT notes for the first time) along with even denser note charts - perfect for those that find Expert difficulty too easy. For your own safety, this difficulty is locked by default and must be unlocked, either by entering a secret code on the title screen, or by manually editing your settings file.
    • This update also features a new N.E.R.F. difficulty chart for one of the included songs: "Medium Stakes Battle"
