Release list
Rufix 0.3.0
What's new
- Compressed file mode: a new Boot selection option, "Compressed file - extract to drive". Rufix formats the drive with the file system you choose, then extracts a
.zip,.7z,.raror.tar.*archive onto it.- Zip and tar work out of the box; 7z and RAR need 7-Zip (
7ziporp7zip-full;unraralso works for RAR). - The archive is checked before anything is erased: files over 4 GB on FAT32, archives too big for the drive, password-protected zips and unsafe paths are refused up front.
- Extraction runs with your own user rights, not as root.
- Zip and tar work out of the box; 7z and RAR need 7-Zip (
- The chosen file now shows as Selected file: '…' under the boot selection, and the boot selection entries keep their titles.
- Running Rufix from a source checkout now uses its own root helper, even when a packaged Rufix is installed.
- README now has screenshots.
Install
- Debian / Ubuntu / Linux Mint / Pop!_OS:
sudo apt install ./rufix_0.3.0_all.deb - Flatpak:
flatpak install --user ./rufix-0.3.0-x86_64.flatpak - Any distro:
tar xzf rufix-0.3.0.tar.gz && cd rufix-0.3.0 && sudo ./install.sh
If you have 0.2.0 installed from the .deb or tarball, you can update from Settings → Check for updates.
Rufix 0.2.0
What's new
- Settings tab with two new options:
- Remember last used settings: boot selection, image, image mode, partition scheme, file system, cluster size, volume label, advanced options and Windows customization choices are restored the next time Rufix starts. The target drive is never remembered.
- Updates: check for new versions (optionally at startup) and install them in one click for the .deb and tarball installs. Downloads are verified against the SHA-256 checksum GitHub publishes for each release file.
- Flatpak bundle (
rufix-0.2.0-x86_64.flatpak), built automatically by GitHub Actions. It uses your system's formatting tools and polkit throughflatpak-spawn --host. - README now describes Rufix as a tool for any Linux distribution.
Install
- Debian / Ubuntu / Linux Mint / Pop!_OS:
sudo apt install ./rufix_0.2.0_all.deb - Flatpak:
flatpak install --user ./rufix-0.2.0-x86_64.flatpak - Any distro:
tar xzf rufix-0.2.0.tar.gz && cd rufix-0.2.0 && sudo ./install.sh
0.1.1 does not include the updater, so this update has to be installed manually once.
Rufix 0.1.1
Fixed
- After formatting or writing a drive, it no longer disappears from the desktop and file manager. Rufix has to unmount the drive while it works, and Linux only mounts drives automatically when they're plugged in. So you had to unplug the drive and plug it back in. Rufix now mounts the drive again when the job finishes.
Install
Linux Mint / Ubuntu / Debian: download rufix_0.1.1_all.deb and run the command below. It upgrades 0.1 in place.
sudo apt install ./rufix_0.1.1_all.debOther distributions: download rufix-0.1.1.tar.gz, then:
tar xzf rufix-0.1.1.tar.gz && cd rufix-0.1.1 && sudo ./install.shRufix 0.1
First release of Rufix, a Rufus clone for Linux. Built for Linux Mint and works on Ubuntu, Debian and other GTK desktops.

What it does
- Formats USB drives and SD cards: FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, ext4 or FAT16, MBR or GPT, plus a bad-blocks check
- Writes Linux ISOs and disk images (
.iso,.img,.img.xz/.gz/.bz2) in DD mode and checks the result - Makes UEFI-bootable Windows 10/11 install drives, with the Rufus options to skip the TPM, Secure Boot and Microsoft account requirements
- Checksums, drag and drop, progress with time remaining, cancel, and a log
Known limitations
This is an early release. It has been tested on disk image files, but not on many real USB drives yet. Drives made in ISO mode boot on UEFI only. Please report problems in Issues.
