This image is for the Retroid Pocket 5 only. It is hosted outside GitHub because of its size. Follow INSTALL-rp5.md to write it to an SD card; it also covers the one-time bootloader step in Android.

Device

Retroid Pocket 5 (Snapdragon 865), both the original and Visionox screen revisions. You can run Holodor straight off a microSD card alongside Android, or install it to internal storage for faster load times.

This release rebuilds the audio stack, fixes USB-C docks, and cuts battery drain during sleep.

What works

  • Steam Big Picture, built-in controls, rumble, Wi-Fi, and sleep/wake.
  • Sleep power management: the audio codec, gamepad microcontroller, Hall-effect stick sensors, RGB LED controllers, and 5V fan boost converter all power down during sleep and come right back on wake.
  • Built-in speakers and the 3.5mm headphone jack (with automatic plug detection). The volume slider scales evenly: 50% is a comfortable everyday level (and the default on first boot), while 100% drives the amplifiers at full output.
  • The display runs at 60 Hz by default to save battery and switches to 120 Hz whenever a game's frame limit calls for it (use the per-game "120 Hz Screen" toggle in Pocknix Control).
  • Games stay pinned to the fast CPU cores while background work like shader compilation runs on the smaller cores.
  • Desktop Mode includes an on-screen keyboard on the taskbar.
  • USB-C docks: 1080p 60 Hz video and audio over HDMI or DisplayPort. Audio switches automatically when you plug in or unplug the dock, without cutting off the first sound. Booting with a dock already plugged in works too.
  • Sleep on a dock: the device sleeps and wakes on the dock with the picture, charging and the dock's ethernet coming back.
  • Docking and undocking with ethernet does not screw up networking.
  • Unity games that use H.264, VP9, or Theora for intro videos play them out of the box (Hollow Knight still skips its intro video, which uses a different format).

Known issues

  • Heavy 3D games run at 10 to 30 fps and the device gets warm. Check the tested games list for frame rates and settings that help.
  • DirectX 12 games do not run on the Snapdragon 865 GPU.
  • Native Linux x86 games do not run; Steam runs everything through Proton on ARM.
  • Holodor uses Valve's ARM64 Steam client, which Valve builds for its own hardware and does not officially support on third-party devices. Bugs inside the Steam client itself are outside our control.
  • Steam needs free disk space while unpacking downloads. Queuing several large installs at once on a nearly full drive can stall the system until you reboot.
  • Some games sit on a blank or loading screen for a couple of minutes the very first time you launch them (Dark Souls Remastered takes about two minutes on a white screen before the title appears).
  • At 100% volume the speakers hit the hardware amplifier limit, so loud games can clip. Android gets about 5 dB more volume out of the speakers using Qualcomm's proprietary speaker-protection DSP, which Holodor does not use yet.
  • Some HDMI dongles occasionally fail to send their display info when plugged in, leaving the external screen at 640x480 with no audio. Unplugging and replugging the dock clears it up.
  • Dock ethernet occasionally wakes from sleep at USB 2.0 speed (around 300 Mbit/s instead of gigabit). Unplug and replug the dock if you need full gigabit speed back.

What changed since 20260927d

  • Headphone jack works out of the box. The 20260927d image left it silent until the first update.
  • Headphones are balanced. The left channel was 2 to 3 dB quieter than the right. The jack now uses the same audio path as stock Android, and left and right measure within 0.1 dB at every volume step.
  • Kernel 7.1.3-33 and device support 27 carry the fix. They are installed together.
  • The bootloader restore tool recognises ROCKNIX ABL 1.2.

  • Kernel 7.1.3-32: controller MCU report rate restored to 250 Hz (fine analog steps).
  • Mesa (Turnip) 26.3.0 devel-7: fixes Unreal Engine 5 titles on the A8xx GPU.
  • gamescope 3.16.0 rocknix.4286887-4: guard against the red-tinted screen after wake (night-mode NaN).
  • Decky Loader 3.2.9 running natively (no FEX) + Pocknix Control 20 with a STICKS page: "Zero stick centres" fixes off-centre sticks and is re-applied at boot.
  • Device support 22/23: back paddles work, InputPlumber 0.81 mapping conflicts resolved, stick LED effects animate, boot-time stick calibration, headphone mixer path.
  • Desktop mode: no lock screen after sleep.
