Cromite F-Droid repository is bugged and its crashing F-Droid | Website is down

it happens on fdroid where first the error was when we added the repository with it now it crashed f-droid

Describe the bug

adding the repository in fdroid was not working a week ago (in other phones which i tried) but now it even crashed fdroid in my own phone

Steps to reproduce the bug

well copy the cromite repo for fdroid link, paste it in fdroid settings, and it will give the error (screenshot attached below)

Expected behavior

it should add the repository in fdroid like it used to

When attempting to check for updates, an error appears.

cromite.org is simply down. What you see is the hoster's error page instead of the requested APK. Domain status is "ok" according to whois, so I guess it's a problem with the web server itself.

I feel like this should be renamed to "The website is down" (I'm not a maintainer, so take this as an advice)

Interestingly, the last archive.org snapshot from October 10 shows the same error page: https://web.archive.org/web/20251010160732/https://www.cromite.org/
So this bug might be two months old already.

Updates do not work in Droidify too. "Invalid server response" error occures

Why is this site necessary anyways? Since it is not working I am downloading updates from Github manually. Is this an issue of traffic volume?

F-droid is a standard de-facto for foss apps on android distribution. Some developers publish blob-free versions of their apps there only. So it is convenient to have it installed. is an option to install Obtanium (app for auto updating from GitHub releases). But f-droid seem to be useful too.

also it is easier to setup for less tech-savy folks, for my friend all I had to do was to install Droidify and teach him to update it (which he understood cause it was like playstore sort of) eventually this error showed up for him and then me, regardless I hope the dev notices it ASAP, other than this problem Its such a great browser fr

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I meant cromite.org. I don't understand why cromite.org is necessary to provide updates when these are available on github. I usually installed Cromite via Droid-ify but I keep missing updates because cromite.org isn't working. In fact, I just installed Obtanium because of that. Cromite is the best version of Chromium there ever was and will likely ever be. If it's a monetary issue I am happy to donate to keep this project healthy but be transparent about it, please.

Oh got it, yeah thats an interesting question, I also want to know lol and yeah similar to you i am stuck at previous version too. I hope someone knowledgeable enough can answer i am also curious

See also #2325 ; AFAICT there's some work going on to move the F-Droid repo hosting on GitHub Pages, to avoid relying on the availability of cromite.org to get updates.

But the dates are stuck on 2025-01-30:
