PaperScrape v5.16 — Stable
v5.16
This release is about Halloween, with a switch for each thing, and Christmas lights in three. The
Halloween theme gets a Headless Horseman in the sky, scarecrows, decorations on the houses and the
shops, a moon that laughs, blood rain and a night that lasts all day, each with its own switch.
-
Halloween, a switch for each thing. The Halloween page now has a switch for each thing it can
show: Halloween itself (the carved moon, bare branches on the leafy trees, withered palms and a
carved face on every pumpkin, as before), Laughing moon, Night sky by day, Horror sky, Halloween
decorations, Pumpkins, Scarecrows (with how many), Headless Horseman and Blood rain. The Halloween
theme as it comes has every new one on; every other theme has them off, and you can turn them on
in any theme. -
The Headless Horseman. About once a minute a headless rider on a black horse gallops across the
sky, his carved pumpkin held up high, and pumpkins on fire fall from him and go out on the pavement.
He is about as tall as Santa. With Santa on in the same theme, the two are never in the sky
together: the Horseman waits for the sky to be his, so he comes by a little less often. -
Scarecrows. Scarecrows with a pointed hat, old clothes and a carved pumpkin for a head, lit at
night, stand where the snowmen stand; in the Halloween theme at about half of those places. Where a
snowman stands too, the scarecrow stands beside it. -
Halloween decorations. Cobwebs at the ends of the roofs, purple bats swinging under them and a
jack-o'-lantern by every front door, its candle lit at night, on the houses and the three shops,
open or shut. -
The moon laughs. About once a minute the Halloween moon throws its face open and laughs for
two seconds, shaking with it. -
Night sky by day. With it on, the Halloween theme is night at every hour: night colours, lit
windows, and the carved moon where the sun would be. The shops keep their real opening hours. While
it is on, Show Sun and Show Rainbow are greyed, and so is Show Birds while the birds are on without
Night Birds; their lines say why. It needs Halloween and Show Moon on. -
Blood rain. When it rains, the rain is red and its drops twice as thick. Your own rain colours
are kept and come back when it is off; snow stays snow. -
Christmas lights in three. The one switch is now three: Lights on the buildings (the bulbs on
the roofs and under the sills, a wreath on every door, a star on every tower, and the distant
houses' bulbs), Lights on the trees (the blinking lights on the leafy trees and the palms) and
Christmas firs (one tree in three a fir with its lights, a star and presents). With Halloween on,
the leafy trees are bare and carry no lights. -
A decoration switch with nothing to decorate is greyed. With the trees off, Lights on the
trees and Christmas firs are off and greyed; with the houses and the buildings off, so are the
Halloween decorations, and Lights on the buildings too while no house stands on the mountains
either. Each line says what to turn back on, and your choice comes back by itself when you do. -
Halloween or Christmas decorations, not both. In a theme, the Halloween decorations and the
Christmas ones are never on together: whichever side is turned on first wins, and the other side's
switches are greyed with a line that says which decorations are on and where to turn them off. -
The gallery card shows the new things. The Halloween card shows the Horseman, small, a
scarecrow and the decorations. -
The work for your phone. On our test phone the wallpaper uses about the same share of the
processor as 5.15 on an autumn noon and night, a winter night with snow falling, a Christmas night
with everything on (Santa's sleigh included) and a Halloween night in heavy rain, from about 0.9 %
less to 1 % more, with about the same memory. The Halloween theme as it comes uses a little more for
its new things: about 3.5 % more at night, and about 6 % more at noon, where it is now night too.
If you are updating from 5.15:
- If you had Christmas lights on, you find all three of the new Christmas switches on, in every
theme where you had it. - In the Halloween theme every new Halloween switch is on, Night sky by day included: at noon it is
night. In every other theme the new things are off. A copy of the Halloween theme you saved under its
own name in 5.15 starts with them off; turn them on from its Halloween page. - Wherever you had Christmas lights on, the three Christmas switches stay on and the Halloween
decorations start off, greyed until you turn all three off; in the Halloween theme too.
Nothing else you have set has changed: your themes, colours and sliders are as you left them.
Still the case since v5.3: this version does not install on Intel-based devices or emulators,
Chromebooks running Android apps included. v5.2 remains the last version that does.

PaperScrape v5.15 — Stable
v5.15
This release is about the update notification, and Santa and the Halloween moon. A new version
now shows a small house at the top of the screen, and the check for it runs with the screen off and
with another wallpaper too. Santa's sleigh is drawn again from scratch, and on Halloween the moon is
the moon again, with a carved face lit from inside.
-
An update notification you can see. When a newer release is out, a small house with an arrow
appears at the top of the screen, and the notification sits among the normal ones in the shade and
on the lock screen. Still no sound, no vibration and no pop-up, and still one notification a
version; a tap opens Update available, as before. -
The check runs with the screen off. With both Check for updates when I open PaperScrape and
Notify me about new versions on (both are off as the app comes), Android's own scheduler now checks
about every three hours whenever there is a network, with the screen off and with another wallpaper
too. Until now the check ran only while PaperScrape was your wallpaper and on screen, so a release
could wait hours for you to look at your phone. Turning the two switches on checks at once. While
PaperScrape's notifications are turned off in Android's settings, the check with the screen off does
not run; opening the settings still checks. Android chooses the exact moment, and to save battery it
may make a check wait longer: with the phone asleep for a long time two checks can come up to about
six hours apart, and for an app it thinks you rarely use, up to a day. -
When GitHub says "not now". GitHub answers 60 requests an hour from each internet address
without an account, shared by every device behind it. When it turns PaperScrape away, the automatic
check now waits until the time GitHub gives and then tries once more, instead of asking again every
few minutes; the Check for updates button, which asks anyway, tells you until when. -
Santa, drawn again. A red sleigh with a raised side, Santa sitting in it and waving, two plump
reindeer with Rudolph in front and his red nose, and gifts dropping from the presents behind Santa.
It is now sized against the people in the street, the same on every phone: Santa a little taller
than a grown-up walking by. As before, it is not darkened at night, and it flies across about once
a minute; the line under Santa now says so. The Christmas gallery card shows the new sleigh, as
small as before. -
The Halloween moon is the moon again. In your theme's moon colour, with its craters and its
glow, and a jack-o'-lantern's face carved into it and lit from inside in a warm yellow. It replaces
the orange pumpkin that stood in for the moon. The line under Halloween now names everything the
switch does: the carved moon, bare branches on the leafy trees, withered palms, and a carved face on
every pumpkin. -
Two small fixes. The Check for updates button now says Checking... while it asks GitHub, and a
second tap no longer sends another request. With Moon turned off, a theme's gallery card no longer
shows a moon. -
A hidden drawing error fixed. In some cases the wallpaper kept an invisible copy of itself
trying to draw ten times a second, which cost processor time (about 4 % of one core on our test
phone). It no longer does. Nothing on screen changes. -
About the same work for your phone. On our test phone the wallpaper uses about the same share of
the processor as 5.14, from about 0.6 % less to 1.5 % more, on an autumn noon and night, a winter
night with snow falling, a Christmas night with everything on (Santa's sleigh included) and a
Halloween night, with about the same memory.
If you are updating from 5.14:
- The update notification has a new entry in Android's notification settings, still called Update
available, and the old one is removed (Android may say "1 category deleted"). If you had turned
PaperScrape's update notifications off, they stay off. - If both switches were on and PaperScrape is your wallpaper, the checks with the screen off start
as soon as the update is installed. If you use another wallpaper, they start the first time you
open PaperScrape's settings after the update. - PaperScrape now asks Android to keep its check scheduled when you restart your phone. Android
grants this without asking; PaperScrape adds nothing of its own to the phone's start: Android's
scheduler keeps the check and runs it when its time comes. Some phones stop apps on their own, after
a restart or when an app has been idle for a while: on those the checks stop until PaperScrape runs
again: opening its settings is enough. - Each check leaves one line in the phone's own log: the outcome, GitHub's answer code and how many
requests GitHub still allows. Nothing about you or your phone is in it. - With Santa on you see the new sleigh, and with Halloween on the new moon.
Nothing else you have set has changed: your themes, colours and sliders are as you left them.
Still the case since v5.3: this version does not install on Intel-based devices or emulators,
Chromebooks running Android apps included. v5.2 remains the last version that does.

PaperScrape v5.14 — Stable
v5.14
This release is about Christmas, and three things that were not right. A new Christmas fir,
decorations on every building, opening hours kept to the minute with the blinds and a shutter down
when a building is shut, the small houses on both sides of the mountains, and a street that stays
the same when you come back to it.
-
A new Christmas fir. Drawn again from scratch: four tiers with zigzag edges, ten lights on
their tips, a star on top and three presents at its foot, with snow on its tiers in winter. At
night its green darkens like the other trees, while its star and lights stay bright. The gallery
card and the Christmas icon show it too, the icon's star as large as before. -
Decorations on every building. With Christmas lights on, every building has a string of lights
along its roof and a wreath on its front door, every tower a star at its top, and every small house
on the mountains three lights; the strings under the windowsills are as they were. They stay lit
when a shop is shut. The gallery cards show them too, a little larger so that they can be seen on
a small card. It is the same Christmas lights switch as before: on as the Christmas theme comes,
off on the others, and it stays off once you turn it off. -
Opening hours to the minute. With a group's opening hours on, a shop that opens at 9:00 opens
at 9:00: over two seconds its blinds and its shutter go up (after dark, its windows light) and its
people walk in. In the minute before it closes they walk out, and at closing time it shuts: its
blinds and its shutter come down and, after dark, its windows go dark. Until now a shop open until
20:00 began to empty around 19:00. With a fixed hour, a building is open at its opening hour and
shut at its closing hour. This holds for the towers, the shops and the school; the fire station and
the police station never close, and the three switches are still off as they come. -
A shut building looks shut, by day too. Outside its hours a blind is down in every window where
somebody could stand (on a tower, in its entrance hall) and a grey shutter is down over its front
door, both coming down over two seconds; at night the glass stays dark as before. The gallery card
draws them too. -
Small houses on both sides of the mountains. They used to stand where chance put them, on many
mountains all on one side (on Autumn's, all on the left); now a mountain with more than one has them
on both sides, two or three a mountain at 50 %, as many as before on average. None stands hidden
behind the mountain next to it any more: where one would be, it takes another place on its own
mountain, or, when every place there is taken, it is left out. If you had them on below 100 %, you
will see them move. -
The street stays the same when you come back. The six buildings among the houses now change
only as the scenery scrolls, a new one coming in from the edge of the screen: back from an app, or
with the screen on again, you find the same ones. With Scroll speed at 0 % they never change (a
swipe between home screens shows a little more of the same street). Whenever the wallpaper starts
again (the phone restarted, the app updated), the street starts from the theme's first buildings. -
Lighter to draw. The falling snow, the stars and every Christmas light are drawn in a lighter
way, and on our test phone Christmas at night, even with everything on, is drawn in one pass where
it sometimes took two. They look the same; on our test phone the smallest stars are a little
dimmer. -
A little less work for your phone at night. On our test phone, against 5.13, the wallpaper uses
about 5 % less of the processor on an autumn night and on a Christmas night with the small houses on
and every shop shut, about 8 % less with winter's snow falling, and about the same on an autumn noon
(1 % more), with about the same memory.
Nothing else you have set has changed: your themes, colours and sliders are as you left them.
Still the case since v5.3: this version does not install on Intel-based devices or emulators,
Chromebooks running Android apps included. v5.2 remains the last version that does.

PaperScrape v5.13 — Stable
v5.13
This release is about the buildings among the houses. A shop, a fire station and a police
station join the restaurant, the bar and the school; all six take turns along the street as the
scenery scrolls, and the buildings come in three groups, each with its own colours, its own opening
hours and its own page in the settings.
-
Three new buildings. A shop with a striped awning, a shopping bag on its sign and crates of
fruit; a fire station with red garage doors, one open on its fire engine, and a hose tower with a
red lamp; a police station with a chequered band, a police car's light bar on the roof and a
shield with a star. They are drawn like the other buildings and have people at their windows,
grown-ups only at the two stations. -
All six on every theme, taking turns. Each of the twelve themes now has all six buildings. As
the scenery scrolls they take turns in five places every two screens among the houses, about three
on a screen, in an order of their own: never two alike on the screen, and never one changing while
you look at it. Each time you come back to the home screen, they are dealt again. -
Fewer towers, more buildings among the houses. To make room, every two screens have one or two
towers fewer than before (45 on the twelve themes where there were 62), and on some themes a
screen can now and then show no tower at all. The towers that stay are the same ones, as tall and
in the same colours. A few trees and garden parasols moved a little along the street to clear the
new places; they keep their colours. -
Three groups. The towers and offices; the shops, which are the restaurant, the bar and the
shop; and the public buildings, which are the school, the fire station and the police station. In
World & scene, under Landscape, the Cities row is now four: Houses, Towers & offices, Shops and
Public buildings, each opening its own page. Show Buildings is on the Towers & offices page and
still shows or hides every building that is not a house. -
Colours of their own. The public buildings no longer wear the shops' colours: each of the
twelve themes gives them a pair chosen for it, a blue-grey and a lavender on Autumn. If you had
changed the shops' colours, you will find the same colours on the school and the two stations. -
Opening hours for each group. Tower opening hours, Shop opening hours and Public building
opening hours, each with its own "Open from" and "Until", all three switched off as they come.
The public buildings' hours are the school's: the fire station and the police station never
close. If you had Shop opening hours on, you will find them on for the shops and for the
school, with the hours you had. -
The gallery card draws three of a theme's buildings among the houses, each in its group's
colours, and no towers when Towers is at 0 %, as the wallpaper does. -
Your saved themes keep their street: their places, their towers and their trees as you saved
them, with all six buildings taking turns in those places. Where one of the six would stand behind
a tree trunk or a pole, or be too hidden, that place moves aside a little when the theme is
opened; its buildings keep their colours and people, and the theme is saved as it was. -
The same work for your phone. On our test phone the wallpaper uses the same share of the
processor and the same memory as 5.12, and draws as many frames a second.
Nothing else you have set has changed: your themes, colours and sliders are as you left them. A
theme saved with 5.13 and opened in 5.12 or 5.11, from a theme file or a backup, shows only the
restaurant, the school and the bar among the houses (on the streets of the twelve themes, the
restaurant and the bar twice every two screens), and gives the school the shops' colours and hours.
Still the case since v5.3: this version does not install on Intel-based devices or emulators,
Chromebooks running Android apps included. v5.2 remains the last version that does.

PaperScrape v5.12 — Stable
v5.12
This release is about the houses: their chimneys, their windows and the people behind them. The
smoke rises from the chimneys, every window of a floor matches, the people walk from window to window,
half the windows of a house light up at night, and the shops and the towers can keep opening hours of
their own.
-
Smoke that rises. The smoke now comes out of the top of the chimney, rises slowly, drifts a
little to one side and fades away: light grey by day, a middle grey at night. Before, three still
puffs sat beside the chimney at every hour, the lowest one on its side. -
Smoke in the cold seasons only. Chimneys smoke where the autumn or the winter colours are on:
Autumn, Winter, Christmas, New Year's Eve and Tundra, as they come. Sunset, Spring, Desert, Beach,
Big City, Easter and Halloween no longer smoke. To bring the smoke back on one of them, choose
Autumn or Winter under "Seasonal palette" in Seasons & decorations; that palette's look comes with
it, the autumn trees and falling leaves or the snow and the winter clothes. There is no separate
switch. -
Windows that match. On every floor of a house, of the school and of the bars, every window is
now the same, framed, where before a floor had one framed window beside small bare ones, or only
small bare ones. The bar's small window no longer sits over its sign or on its lantern. -
People at any window, and they walk. In the houses, the shops, the school and the bars the
people can stand at any framed window, the new ones included, and every building has as many as
before. Now and then one of them goes to another window, and walks there: out of the window
sideways, hidden by the wall, and into the other one from its side. It is the same person, in the
same clothes. A tower's people stay at their windows, as before. Nobody appears or vanishes any
more. -
Houses at night. A house lights half its windows, every window with somebody at it among
them, and the others are dark glass. Now and then, one at a time, a light goes out as another comes
on. The distant houses on the mountains have dark unlit windows too, and a gallery card shown at
night lights half the windows. -
Opening hours, separately. "Business hours" is now two switches in World & scene, Cities:
"Shop opening hours" for the restaurant, the school and the bar (under Shops) and "Tower opening
hours" for the towers (under Buildings), each with its own "Open from" and "Until". Both come
switched off. If you had "Business hours" on, you will find both on, with the hours you had.
"Reset Shops to default" and "Reset Buildings to default" each put back their own. -
Closing and opening. When a shop, the school, a bar or a tower closes, its people walk out one
at a time while its windows are still lit, and when it opens they walk in. Closed at night, its
windows are dark glass like a house's unlit ones, where before they kept the pale glass of the day. -
When the time jumps. If the hour moves all at once (the screen off for a while, a fixed hour
moved, the phone's clock changed) or you change the opening hours, the people are at once where they
should be, as the sky and the lights are: they walk when the change happens while you watch. -
A little more work for your phone. On our test phone the wallpaper uses about 1.5 to 3 % more
of the processor than 5.11, for the smoke, the lights and the people walking, and it moves as
smoothly as before.
Nothing else you have set has changed: your themes, colours and sliders are as you left them. A theme
file or backup made with 5.12 and opened in an older version gives the towers the shops' hours.
Still the case since v5.3: this version does not install on Intel-based devices or emulators,
Chromebooks running Android apps included. v5.2 remains the last version that does.

PaperScrape v5.11 — Stable
v5.11
This release is about the houses and the buildings. The towers take their theme's colours and
come in three heights, the shops get colours of their own, the lamps by the doors go out by day,
and small houses can stand far away on the mountains.
-
Towers in their theme's colours. Every theme now starts its towers from two colours of its
own, chosen so that they always stand out from the hills and mountains behind them: brick and
ochre on Autumn, steel and sand on Big City, coral and sea green on Beach, and so on. Before,
every theme had the same slate grey, and on Big City the towers almost disappeared against the
hills. You can still change them in World & scene, Cities, "Buildings", as before. The gallery
cards show them too. -
Three heights of tower. A short one of two tiers, the one you know (a storey taller now, for
its hall), and a taller one. Every theme has as many towers as before. -
Shops with colours of their own. The restaurant, the school and the bar used to wear the
towers' colours. They now have their own, "Shops" in World & scene, Cities, with its own "Reset
Shops to default". They start in the houses' cream, in a warmer stone on Winter, Christmas and
Tundra, and in a whiter paper on Beach. Whether they stand is still decided by "Show Buildings",
and the Shops line says so when it is off. -
Towers in town, not on the hill. The few towers, one to three on each theme, that looked as
if they stood on the crest of the hill are now drawn a little forward, in the town. -
The lamps by the doors are off by day. They used to burn even at noon, and the bar's lantern
at every hour. Now they light at dusk with the windows beside them, and with "Business hours" on,
a shop's or a tower's lamp stays dark while it is closed. -
A hall at the foot of every tower. Instead of three bigger windows scattered among the small
ones, each tower has a tall entrance hall: four big windows above the canopy and two beside the
door, with people in them as in the shops' windows. Only small windows above. -
Distant houses on the mountains. Little houses far away on the mountains, with snow on their
roofs when the winter palette is on and lit windows at night. They come switched off, on
every theme: turn them on in World & scene, "Distant houses" (just under Mountains), where you can
also choose how many; it starts at 50 %. They wear the colours of "Houses", the page says so,
and a tap takes you there. They stand on the mountains, so on Beach and Big City, which come
without mountains, turn the mountains on first. -
Mountains at 0 % are off. A mountain layer set to 0 % shows no mountain, and its switch now
says so instead of reading on; a tap brings the theme's amount back. The gallery cards no longer
draw it. -
Random themes and themes of your own too. "Shuffle a random theme" now gives the towers and
the shops colours chosen so that they stand out from that theme's hills, as on the twelve themes.
On a theme of your own, "Reset Buildings to default" and "Reset Shops to default" bring the
colours of the theme it was copied from, or colours chosen against its hills. -
If you had already changed a theme. The new colours are where a theme starts. A theme you had
already changed, a theme saved in the gallery or of your own, and a backup or a theme file from an
older version can keep their towers and shops in the colours they had. "Reset Buildings to
default" and "Reset Shops to default" (World & scene, Cities) bring the new colours; "Reset
Buildings to default" also puts back the towers' switch, their amount and the business hours. On a
built-in theme, "Reset this theme's scene to defaults" brings them too, with the rest of the theme
as it comes, and it also removes a version of that theme saved in the gallery. -
A little more work for your phone. On our test phone the wallpaper uses about 2 to 3 % more
of the processor than 5.10, mostly for the towers' new halls and the people in them; the distant
houses, if you turn them on, add about as much again at 50 %, and a little more at 100 %.
Nothing else you have set has changed: your themes, colours and sliders are as you left them.
Still the case since v5.3: this version does not install on Intel-based devices or emulators,
Chromebooks running Android apps included. v5.2 remains the last version that does.

PaperScrape v5.10 — Stable
v5.10
This release makes every switch tell the truth, makes the wallpaper lighter on your phone, and
lets you have palms on any theme. Most of it is about the settings saying what really happens,
and doing what they say.
-
Switches that tell the truth. A switch is now on only while what it promises is actually
happening. When something stops it (a permission, a setting of your phone, another wallpaper set
as your background, another switch, or an amount at 0 %), the switch shows off, the line under it
says what is missing, and a tap takes you where to put it right. Your own choice is kept, and comes
back by itself once nothing is missing. This covers "Notify me about new versions", "Live Weather",
"Realistic Moon Phases", the night birds, "Thunderstorm", "Swipe scroll", and every switch whose
amount is at 0 %. -
Lighter on your phone. On our test phone the wallpaper now uses about a fifth less of the
processor by day and nearly a quarter less at night, and next to nothing while it is out of sight.
It gives memory back after you close the settings and when the phone runs short of it, and it
deletes a downloaded update once that update is installed. -
Your theme from the first picture. When the wallpaper starts, it shows your own theme straight
away; before, Sunset flashed for a moment first. -
Smoother, on our test phone, by day, at night and in rain or snow. Only under the heaviest rain
(rain at 100 %, or a downpour from Live Weather) do a few more pictures than before reach the screen
a moment late. -
Palms on any theme. "Palms", now in World & scene under Trees, works on every theme: the palms
take the place of the ordinary trees, in the same spots, and Christmas firs stay firs. On themes
that had no palms it starts off. "Reset Trees to default" puts the palms back as the theme comes;
"Reset decorations to defaults" no longer touches them. "Summer" is gone from Seasons &
decorations: it only held the palms. -
New versions, sooner and in full. "Check for updates automatically" is now called "Check for
updates when I open PaperScrape", which is what it always did. With "Notify me about new versions"
on, the wallpaper looks for a new version about every three hours instead of once a day, and when
nothing has changed it downloads almost nothing. The update window shows the notes of every version
since yours, whole: before, they were cut after about six thousand characters, and versions too far
back were left out. -
Your phone's location, asked for less and honestly. The position from your phone is asked for
at most once an hour; if a search finds nothing, it tries again after 5, 15 and 30 minutes. Without
the location permission no position from your phone is used at all, not even an old one. Weather &
time says when the permission is missing or the phone's location is off, and a tap takes you there. -
A fixed hour is the same everywhere. With the time frozen at a fixed hour, sunrise is at 6:00
and sunset at 20:00 wherever you are, and your phone is not asked for its position. -
Resets do what they say. "Reset decorations to defaults" now asks first, and also clears the
heaps of snow and leaves. "Reset this theme's scene" tells you that Motion stays, because every
theme shares it. In the gallery, "Reset to default" now also clears the changes you made from the
menus, and "Replace with current" asks first. -
A saved theme keeps its look. Changing anything in World & scene or Seasons & decorations on a
theme you saved in the gallery no longer brings back how that theme looked out of the box. -
The lake at 0 % is off. At a height of 0 % the lake is now simply off: "Show Lake" says so,
and a tap brings it back. The gallery cards no longer show trees, clouds, boats or anything else
you have set to 0 %. -
Picking a theme while the calendar chooses now asks whether to show it anyway, and turns the
automatic theme by date off if you say yes. Before, the pick changed nothing. -
While Live Weather is in charge, the Clouds and the Rain and snow pages no longer show their
switches, which could read off with the forecast's clouds on screen: they say the forecast decides. -
Clearer lines everywhere. Among them: the buildings' slider is called Towers, because the shops
always stay; at 0 % there is still one car, and turning the cars off takes the road away too; each
bird colour says what share of the flock it gets; "Christmas lights" says it also turns one tree in
three into a fir with presents; a slider is greyed while its switch is off; Weather & time asks for
a key only for the weather service you chose. -
Behind the scenes, the project's working notes were put in order. Nothing in the app changes for
it.
Nothing else you have set has changed: your themes, colours and sliders are as you left them.
Still the case since v5.3: this version does not install on Intel-based devices or emulators,
Chromebooks running Android apps included. v5.2 remains the last version that does.

PaperScrape v5.9 — Stable
v5.9
This release puts right what was still wrong after v5.8. The gallery cards now show the night
the way the wallpaper does, a few things that did not work now do, and the wallpaper moves a little
more smoothly at night.
-
The night cards look like the wallpaper at night. On the Halloween and New Year's Eve cards,
on the preview at the top of the settings when it shows one of them, and on the World & scene
preview when you switch it to Night, the trees, cars, snowmen, gifts, penguins, rabbits, eggs and
pumpkins used to keep their daytime colours, and the palms their daytime light. They now darken as
the wallpaper's do, and the rain and snow on those cards fall in the wallpaper's night colours.
The pumpkins on the Halloween card now have their carved faces, as on the wallpaper, and with
opening hours turned on the shops' and towers' windows go dark after closing time, as they do on
the wallpaper. The Sunset card, which shows seven in the evening, is a little darker too, as the
wallpaper is at that hour. -
The rain shows on every card. With rain turned on, the drops on the Big City, Beach and
Sunset cards, and on New Year's Eve's in World & scene by day, were nearly the colour of the sky
and could hardly be seen. They now stand out as they do on the wallpaper. -
The card's sun is the wallpaper's sun. With a Sun Color of your own, the card could show a
dark sun the wallpaper never draws. It now shows the sun as the wallpaper does; your colour still
tints the glow around it on the wallpaper. -
The preview at the top of the settings shows the whole scene, road, cars and pavement
included, the same shape as the gallery cards. It is a little taller than before. -
"Rename" works. Renaming a saved theme now changes the name you see everywhere, straight away.
Themes you renamed with an older version show the name you gave them last. -
"Automatic theme by date" tells the truth about gaps. If your holiday calendar leaves days that
no season covers, the line under the switch now says how many, and that on those days you see the
theme you picked yourself unless a holiday falls on them. -
A theme file from an old version gets its school. Importing a theme exported by v5.5 or
earlier now adds the school, in the same place saved themes got theirs. -
Notifications on Android 13 and later. If you switch off PaperScrape's notifications in your
phone's settings, the app now says so under "Notify me about new versions" instead of still
promising an alert. The switch in the app stays on: it is your choice inside the app, and the line
tells you the phone has turned notifications off. -
Smoother at night. On our test phone, with the stars out, about one picture in seven used to
reach the screen a moment late; now it is about one in eleven, and without the stars fewer still.
The phone does a little less work for it. Each picture now reaches the screen a sixtieth of a
second later, which you cannot notice on a wallpaper. -
A dolphin no longer jumps in front of a nearer wave. In a thunderstorm on Beach and Spring, a
leaping dolphin was sometimes drawn over a wave, or the sail of a boat, that was closer to you. -
Nothing is copied to a new phone any more. Before, on some brands of phone, your settings,
saved themes, weather keys and last location were copied to a new phone by Android, and on others
nothing was. Now nothing is, on any phone. To move PaperScrape to a new phone, use the app's own
backup file, in Advanced & about. -
Safer saved themes. If one of your saved themes ever could not be read, every other one used
to disappear from the Themes screen and your changes were lost. Now only that one is set aside,
and it comes back by itself if a later version can read it. No version so far writes such a
theme: this is a safeguard. -
Behind the scenes, housekeeping for the people who maintain the app: the checks that guard the
code look in the right places, the compiler reports no warnings, and the project's notes are in
English throughout.
Nothing else you have set has changed: your themes, colours and sliders are as you left them.
Still the case since v5.3: this version does not install on Intel-based devices or emulators,
Chromebooks running Android apps included. v5.2 remains the last version that does.

PaperScrape v5.8 — Stable
v5.8
This release makes PaperScrape do what it says. Switches that never reached the wallpaper now
do, settings that were quietly lost are kept, texts that promised something untrue have been
corrected, and the gallery cards now take their look from the wallpaper itself. The wallpaper also
moves more evenly, and the shops on the built-in themes have been rearranged so that none of them
hides behind a house or a tree.
-
The Palms switch works. Turning Palms off on Beach or Desert now changes the wallpaper at
once, "Reset decorations to defaults" brings the palms back, and a choice made on Beach no longer
switches off the Desert's palms. On the ten themes that have no palms, the row now says "none on
this theme" instead of "1 on". If your Desert already lost its palms to the old mistake, turn the
switch back on or reset its decorations: the app cannot tell that apart from a choice you made. -
Automatic colour modes stay as you set them. A mode such as "Day sets night" is no longer
lost when you edit another theme and come back. -
Sunrise and sunset follow the calendar again. With a Custom location, or with Live Weather
off, the sun kept the times of the day they were last worked out, and when the clocks go back at
the end of summer time it would have risen an hour late. The times are now worked out again every
day and whenever the clock changes. -
A damaged file can no longer close the app. A backup or theme file carrying an impossible
number made PaperScrape close when you imported it. It is now refused with a message, and nothing
changes. -
Texts that said something untrue have been corrected.
- The weather screen spoke of a "built-in key". There is none: without a key of your own,
PaperScrape uses Open-Meteo's free service, and the screen now says so. - "Check for updates automatically" no longer promises a daily check on its own: by itself it
looks each time you open the settings. The check while the wallpaper is on screen comes with
"Notify me about new versions", and it runs about once a day, and again whenever the wallpaper
restarts, rather than "at most once a day". - When a weather key is refused, the screen now says what really happens: the scene shows the
theme's own weather, and the key is tried again about once an hour. - "Notifications are switched off for PaperScrape in your phone's settings" now appears when that
is true. Before, it never appeared at all. - The names of the weather services are no longer cut short. The chosen option in a row of
buttons is now shown by its fill alone, without a check mark, so "Open-Meteo" and "OpenWeather"
read in full.
- The weather screen spoke of a "built-in key". There is none: without a key of your own,
-
The gallery cards take their look from the wallpaper. The sky, road, hills, mountains, water,
palms and stars on each card now come from the same rules the wallpaper uses, at a real moment of
its day. The Sunset card is no longer coral, the Desert card has the wallpaper's mountains instead
of dunes the wallpaper never draws, the Tundra card no longer shows a fir tree its wallpaper does
not have, the cars sit on the road instead of just above it, and a change you have not saved yet
shows on the card. -
Two reset buttons instead of one. In Advanced & about, "Reset saved versions of built-in
themes" removes the copies made with "Replace with current", and "Reset current edits to built-in
themes" removes the changes made in the menus. Each one names the themes it would touch, is
greyed out when there is nothing to reset, and asks before it acts. The single button they
replace counted the wrong thing. -
Smaller things put right. A check of the app's own notes against what the app does found 42
real mistakes, and all 42 are repaired. The ones you might notice: the driver and the passenger
of a car are never dressed alike any more; the people on the street always keep a mix of skin
tones; Restore now imports exactly the file it checked; backups made before v4.15 get two updates
they had been missing; a Christmas theme saved long ago keeps its lights; the lake no longer shows
storm waves while snow is falling; and about a third of the clouds, which were being drawn twice, are drawn once. -
The density sliders say what they do. A slider at 50 % now keeps half of what it can show;
it used to be off by up to five points. On the twelve built-in themes this takes away five
objects out of 324 and adds none (a house on Autumn, a tree on Winter, a palm on Desert and two
gifts on Christmas). Themes you have saved are exactly as they were. -
Smoother motion. About one frame in ten used to stay on screen half as long again as it
should; now it is about one in thirty-four. The wallpaper now waits for the screen's own refresh
instead of a fixed timer, and it measures that refresh on each phone rather than assuming it. -
The hills' shadow is gone. On large phones it showed as a thin dark line along the top of the
hills on Beach and Sunset. -
The shops no longer hide. On every built-in theme the restaurant, the school and the bar now
stand clear of the houses and tree trunks in front of them, and the themes no longer all put the
same shop in the same spot of the street: at most three themes share one. -
The picture in Android's list of live wallpapers looks like PaperScrape: a small view of the
street as it looks on your home screen, instead of orange hills with no town. -
"Set as wallpaper" knows when it already is. When PaperScrape is your wallpaper, the button at
the top of the settings says "PaperScrape is your wallpaper". If Android has stopped the app and
the home screen is left blank, it says "Set as wallpaper" again, and tapping it brings the
wallpaper back. -
Behind the scenes, housekeeping for the people who maintain the app: the tool that draws the
buildings is written in English throughout, and unused code and library files are gone. The
download is about 15 kB smaller than v5.7.
Three things you may notice:
- The wallpaper takes about half a second longer to appear the first time it starts, after the
phone restarts or the app is updated: about 1.2 to 1.3 seconds instead of 0.8 on our test phone.
Opening the app while PaperScrape is not your wallpaper takes the same half second more. It
happens once each time; after that nothing is slower than before. - The shops on every built-in theme have moved, because of the rearrangement above. Houses,
trees and parasols are where they were, and themes you have saved keep their shops where they
were. - If you saved a theme before v5.6 and have not changed any saved theme since, the school the
app added to it moves once, by a short step of about a fiftieth of the screen's width, on some
themes. As soon as you save any change to your themes, it stays where it is.
Nothing else you have set has changed: your themes, colours and sliders are as you left them.
Still the case since v5.3: this version does not install on Intel-based devices or emulators,
Chromebooks running Android apps included. v5.2 remains the last version that does.

PaperScrape v5.7 — Stable
v5.7
The theme gallery now shows each theme's real street, the settings say what they do, and the
app can tell you when a new version is out. Most of this release is repairs: things that were
drawn in the wrong place, menus that did one thing and said another, and a few details of the
scene that had slipped.
-
Every gallery card has been redrawn to match the wallpaper. Each card is a small picture of
that theme's own street, and until now it was arranged for looks rather than taken from the
scene: the school, which every theme builds, was on no card; the bar hid behind a house; the
Beach card left out its whole town; boats and dolphins stood on dry land. Now every card shows
all six kinds of building in the order they stand on the street, school included, with the fire
engine on the road, gulls in the sky by day, and mountains rounded the way the wallpaper draws
them instead of pointed. The boats and dolphins sit in the water. A card still shows nothing its
theme does not have, and now nothing the street is built from is missing from it, apart from the
garden parasols, which have no picture of their own to put on a card. -
Santa's sleigh is on the Christmas card, as it is in the Christmas sky.
-
The settings menus say what they do.
- "Reset this theme's scene to defaults" now asks before it acts, and tells you that it also
clears that theme's seasonal decorations — which it always did, without saying so. Your other
themes are never touched. - "Umbrellas" is now called "Parasols", because that is what it controls: the garden parasols.
The umbrellas people open in the rain follow the weather and have no switch, and the screen
now says so. - With the lake switched off, the boat and dolphin controls are greyed out instead of looking
active while doing nothing. What you had set is kept for when the lake comes back. - The "Lake" row shows whether the lake is on, like the rows around it.
- "Weather effects", opened from Weather & time, now takes you back to Weather & time.
- Each seasonal decoration's on/off switch was shown twice, on the season's screen and again
inside its options. It is now on the season's screen only.
- "Reset this theme's scene to defaults" now asks before it acts, and tells you that it also
-
A notification when a new version is out — only if you want one. In Advanced & about there
is a new switch, "Notify me about new versions", under "Check for updates automatically"; both
are off unless you turn them on. With both on, PaperScrape looks for a new release at most once a
day, while it is your wallpaper and on screen, and if it finds one it puts a quiet notification
in the shade: no sound, no pop-up. Tapping it opens the same "Update available" window as before,
and nothing is downloaded until you choose to. On Android 13 and later your phone asks for
permission when you turn the new switch on. In that window, "Next app launch" is now called
"Not now", which is what it does. -
Christmas has its spire back. Since v5.6 the Christmas skyline showed only domed towers; the
tower with the spire stands again, and it is the only building added. A Christmas theme you saved
yourself, or one whose building density you have changed, keeps the skyline it has. -
Themes you saved before v5.6 now have a school. The school is added to the street, between
the restaurant and the bar; every house, tower, tree and shop you saved stays exactly where it
was. (A theme file shared from an older version and imported now is left as it was shared.) -
The sky no longer jumps when live weather goes out of date. If Live Weather cannot get a new
reading for three hours, the scene goes back to the theme's own sky. The clouds used to change in
a single frame when that happened; now they drift there over a few seconds — longer for a bigger
change, about fifteen for a clear sky clouding over — and the next reading that does arrive drifts
in too. Rain and storms still start and stop at once, just as they do whenever the forecast
changes. -
Your two colours now come out half and half. Houses, buildings, trees and cars each wear
Color 1 or Color 2 of their category at random, as the menu promises — but the split was lopsided:
about one object in three wore Color 1, and among cars fewer than one in five. It is now even. You
will see some objects on your street wearing your other colour; they are the same objects, in the
same places, in the colours you chose. -
Behind the scenes, some housekeeping for the people who maintain the app. None of it changes
what you see.
Nothing you have set has changed: your themes, colours and sliders are as you left them, and your
saved themes gain a school. The one new setting is the notification switch, and it starts off.
Still the case since v5.3: this version does not install on Intel-based devices or emulators,
Chromebooks running Android apps included. v5.2 remains the last version that does.
