v5.8

This release makes PaperScrape do what it says. Switches that never reached the wallpaper now
do, settings that were quietly lost are kept, texts that promised something untrue have been
corrected, and the gallery cards now take their look from the wallpaper itself. The wallpaper also
moves more evenly, and the shops on the built-in themes have been rearranged so that none of them
hides behind a house or a tree.

  • The Palms switch works. Turning Palms off on Beach or Desert now changes the wallpaper at
once, "Reset decorations to defaults" brings the palms back, and a choice made on Beach no longer
switches off the Desert's palms. On the ten themes that have no palms, the row now says "none on
this theme" instead of "1 on". If your Desert already lost its palms to the old mistake, turn the
switch back on or reset its decorations: the app cannot tell that apart from a choice you made.

  • Automatic colour modes stay as you set them. A mode such as "Day sets night" is no longer
lost when you edit another theme and come back.

  • Sunrise and sunset follow the calendar again. With a Custom location, or with Live Weather
off, the sun kept the times of the day they were last worked out, and when the clocks go back at
the end of summer time it would have risen an hour late. The times are now worked out again every
day and whenever the clock changes.

  • A damaged file can no longer close the app. A backup or theme file carrying an impossible
number made PaperScrape close when you imported it. It is now refused with a message, and nothing
    changes.

  • Texts that said something untrue have been corrected.

    • The weather screen spoke of a "built-in key". There is none: without a key of your own,
PaperScrape uses Open-Meteo's free service, and the screen now says so.
    • "Check for updates automatically" no longer promises a daily check on its own: by itself it
looks each time you open the settings. The check while the wallpaper is on screen comes with
"Notify me about new versions", and it runs about once a day, and again whenever the wallpaper
restarts, rather than "at most once a day".
    • When a weather key is refused, the screen now says what really happens: the scene shows the
theme's own weather, and the key is tried again about once an hour.
    • "Notifications are switched off for PaperScrape in your phone's settings" now appears when that
is true. Before, it never appeared at all.
    • The names of the weather services are no longer cut short. The chosen option in a row of
buttons is now shown by its fill alone, without a check mark, so "Open-Meteo" and "OpenWeather"
      read in full.
  • The gallery cards take their look from the wallpaper. The sky, road, hills, mountains, water,
palms and stars on each card now come from the same rules the wallpaper uses, at a real moment of
its day. The Sunset card is no longer coral, the Desert card has the wallpaper's mountains instead
of dunes the wallpaper never draws, the Tundra card no longer shows a fir tree its wallpaper does
not have, the cars sit on the road instead of just above it, and a change you have not saved yet
    shows on the card.

  • Two reset buttons instead of one. In Advanced & about, "Reset saved versions of built-in
themes" removes the copies made with "Replace with current", and "Reset current edits to built-in
themes" removes the changes made in the menus. Each one names the themes it would touch, is
greyed out when there is nothing to reset, and asks before it acts. The single button they
    replace counted the wrong thing.

  • Smaller things put right. A check of the app's own notes against what the app does found 42
real mistakes, and all 42 are repaired. The ones you might notice: the driver and the passenger
of a car are never dressed alike any more; the people on the street always keep a mix of skin
tones; Restore now imports exactly the file it checked; backups made before v4.15 get two updates
they had been missing; a Christmas theme saved long ago keeps its lights; the lake no longer shows
storm waves while snow is falling; and about a third of the clouds, which were being drawn twice, are drawn once.

  • The density sliders say what they do. A slider at 50 % now keeps half of what it can show;
it used to be off by up to five points. On the twelve built-in themes this takes away five
objects out of 324 and adds none (a house on Autumn, a tree on Winter, a palm on Desert and two
gifts on Christmas). Themes you have saved are exactly as they were.

  • Smoother motion. About one frame in ten used to stay on screen half as long again as it
should; now it is about one in thirty-four. The wallpaper now waits for the screen's own refresh
instead of a fixed timer, and it measures that refresh on each phone rather than assuming it.

  • The hills' shadow is gone. On large phones it showed as a thin dark line along the top of the
    hills on Beach and Sunset.

  • The shops no longer hide. On every built-in theme the restaurant, the school and the bar now
stand clear of the houses and tree trunks in front of them, and the themes no longer all put the
same shop in the same spot of the street: at most three themes share one.

  • The picture in Android's list of live wallpapers looks like PaperScrape: a small view of the
street as it looks on your home screen, instead of orange hills with no town.

  • "Set as wallpaper" knows when it already is. When PaperScrape is your wallpaper, the button at
the top of the settings says "PaperScrape is your wallpaper". If Android has stopped the app and
the home screen is left blank, it says "Set as wallpaper" again, and tapping it brings the
    wallpaper back.

  • Behind the scenes, housekeeping for the people who maintain the app: the tool that draws the
buildings is written in English throughout, and unused code and library files are gone. The
download is about 15 kB smaller than v5.7.

Three things you may notice:

  • The wallpaper takes about half a second longer to appear the first time it starts, after the
phone restarts or the app is updated: about 1.2 to 1.3 seconds instead of 0.8 on our test phone.
Opening the app while PaperScrape is not your wallpaper takes the same half second more. It
happens once each time; after that nothing is slower than before.
  • The shops on every built-in theme have moved, because of the rearrangement above. Houses,
trees and parasols are where they were, and themes you have saved keep their shops where they
    were.
  • If you saved a theme before v5.6 and have not changed any saved theme since, the school the
app added to it moves once, by a short step of about a fiftieth of the screen's width, on some
themes. As soon as you save any change to your themes, it stays where it is.

Nothing else you have set has changed: your themes, colours and sliders are as you left them.

Still the case since v5.3: this version does not install on Intel-based devices or emulators,
Chromebooks running Android apps included. v5.2 remains the last version that does.
