Warning

WARNING! Mali Support is REALLY experimental and is to be expected to be shitty as possible. I don't have intentions to fix this and work on its support for now. Thanks for Mali fork and user patch suggested in #62 this is possible. You can thank these people for this. Tested only on Pixel 7 with the System default driver. Experience was ass, but it is working tho.

Experimental Mali support

  • The game now starts on ARM Mali GPUs with the phone's own Vulkan driver. Without an Adreno GPU, the launcher uses the system driver instead of the bundled Turnip. A driver you import yourself (for example PanVK) is still used.
  • Mali drivers have no clip distance: the game's clip planes are skipped there, so some reflections may show geometry they would normally hide.
  • Mali GPUs can't read the game's DXT textures: they are decoded when loaded, which uses more memory and may stutter while new textures stream in.
  • Fixed a black screen where only the HUD was drawn: Mali has no 2x MSAA, which the game asks for, so those surfaces now use 4x.

Fixed

  • Resolution. Since 0.5.9.2 the game rendered at the screen's full resolution instead of the default 720p, and choosing 720p in the Display menu did nothing. 720p is applied again, which also gives some frame rate back.
  • Audio stutter. Audio now opens in Android's normal mode instead of its low-latency mode, whose buffer is only a few milliseconds long. Short CPU hiccups no longer turn into gaps. Sound may be about 20 to 40 ms later than before, which you shouldn't notice.
  • Pause map icons sliding on screens wider than 16:9 (#66). Blips and the GPS route on the pause menu map stay on their places while you move the cursor. The minimap during gameplay is unchanged.
  • Android 10: bundled Turnip not loading ("cannot locate symbol call_once", #63). The driver uses thread functions that Android only has since version 11; the app now provides them on older versions. Not tested on an Android 10 device yet.

Also in this release (from the 0.5.9.2 pre-release, for those updating from 0.5.9)

  • Vehicle damage (#46): cars show every dent, not only the first impact.
  • Crash in the safehouse and other random crashes on older phones (#58): on Linux kernels older than 4.17, a memory call could silently return the wrong address.
  • In-game Display menu settings apply: args.txt no longer overrides them on every launch. On the first start, the saved shadow map size and reflection resolution are reset once (the highest shadow setting ran at about 10 FPS on a Snapdragon 865).
  • Launcher: Sustained performance mode, Thermal guard and Safe mode (for bug reports).
  • Android performance hints, the main game thread sleeping instead of spinning while it waits for a frame, textures untiled on the GPU, and cheaper locks between game threads.

Known issues

  • Heavy scenes (under the bridge, many shadows) are still CPU-bound at about 28 to 31 FPS on a Snapdragon 865.
  • On Mali, the city runs slowly and audio may still stutter.
