Supported hardware
This is a summary. The authoritative, up-to-date list, including per-feature test status and the DJI Cellular module setup steps, is on the hardware page.
| amd64 (64-bit x86) | arm64 (64-bit ARM) | |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Supported | Planned (1.3.1) |
| Operating system | Debian 12, Ubuntu 22.04 or later, or Fedora, with systemd | To be confirmed |
| Install path | systemd package (recommended); Docker Compose coming soon | Docker Compose with a multi-architecture image (planned) |
| Verified platform | Ubuntu 22.04, amd64 | Not tested yet |
Also needed: root access, the full iproute2 package, the option and qmi_wwan kernel drivers,
/dev/net/tun for Wi-Fi calling, ModemManager stopped and disabled, and TCP port 2222 reachable
from the phone. An Intel N100 mini PC, a used thin client or a NUC works well; 2 GB RAM and 4 GB
disk are enough for the node.
The node drives Qualcomm-based Quectel modules over USB through their serial (AT) and QMI interfaces. One node takes up to five modules.
| Module | Status |
|---|---|
| DJI Cellular module (Quectel EG25-G inside) | Tested on amd64, Ubuntu 22.04, after a one-time USB identity switch |
| Quectel EG25-G | Compatible, not tested on its own yet |
| Quectel EC25 (regional variants) | Compatible, not tested |
| Quectel EC20 | Compatible; cellular call audio partly tested, other functions not tested |
| Quectel EC21 and EG21 | Compatible, not tested |
| Quectel EM05, EM06 and EG06 | Compatible, not tested; needs an adapter with USB and a SIM slot |
| Quectel RM500Q (5G, M.2) | Compatible, not tested; needs an M.2-to-USB 3 adapter with a SIM slot |
Tested on the DJI Cellular module: SMS over the cellular network and over Wi-Fi calling; Wi-Fi calling registration, incoming and outgoing calls with two-way audio, hold and resume; eSIM profile switching; mobile data. Calls over the cellular network have not been confirmed on any module yet; calls work over Wi-Fi calling.
Attach both antennas (main and diversity), and use a powered USB hub for more than one module.
- Remove the SIM PIN beforehand, in a phone. Physical SIM cards work as they are.
- The modules have no built-in eSIM. For eSIM profiles, use a removable eUICC card in the module's SIM slot.
- Wi-Fi calling must be enabled on your plan by your carrier. The module must register on the cellular network with that SIM at least once.
- Vonode cannot promise that a particular carrier or plan works.
- USB dongles that only present a network card (HiLink, RNDIS-only or ECM-only firmware).
- Modules not based on a Qualcomm chipset; modules from other vendors have not been tested.
- OpenWrt routers, Docker Desktop on macOS or Windows, and virtual machines without USB pass-through.
- ARM hosts in this release (planned for 1.3.1).
