How do I get a key to connect to a server
Short answer: VpnHood! CLIENT does not come with any built-in server. It is a self-hosted VPN, so to connect you need an AccessKey that points to a VpnHood! SERVER — and that server has to be run by you, or by someone who shares its key with you.
There are three common ways to get an AccessKey:
-
From a friend, community, or organization — The most common way. If a friend, a group, or an organization already runs a VpnHood! SERVER, they can share their AccessKey with you. You simply add that key to the app to connect.
-
Run your own server — Because VpnHood is open-source and self-hosted, you can set up your own VpnHood! SERVER on any hosting/VPS and generate your own keys. See Install VpnHood! SERVER.
-
Buy a key — Some communities and sellers distribute private AccessKeys.
If you don't have a key and don't want to run a server, use VpnHood! CONNECT instead. It's the official free VpnHood app with built-in servers, so it works with a single tap and no key is required.
VpnHood! CLIENT vs. VpnHood! CONNECT — CLIENT is for connecting to your own/private servers via an AccessKey. CONNECT is the official free VPN with built-in servers and needs no key.
Once you have an AccessKey, just install the client and add the key in the app:
