The Binding of Isaac — Native Recomp v1.2.0

Android arrives, plus analog movement on every stick and touch controls on Switch.

📱 New: Android version

  • Native APK for 64-bit ARM phones and tablets with Android 7.0 or newer (OpenGL ES 3.0).
  • Touch controls: semi-transparent joysticks appear where you put your finger: left half to move, right half
to shoot. Tap the bomb counter, the active item and the card/pill to use them, and use the pause button next
    to -LIFE-
    (or the back button/gesture).
  • Bluetooth / USB controllers work as on PC and can be mixed with touch.
  • Automatic resolution: renders at 720 lines and steps down to 600 / 540 / 480 if the device can't keep 60 fps
(or set render_height yourself). Runs at the screen's refresh rate, 90 / 120 Hz included.
  • Low-latency audio (AAudio) mixed at the device's own rate. The run is paused and saved when you leave the app.
  • The game, settings, saves and logs live in the IsaacRecomp folder at the root of the internal storage.

🕹️ Analog movement (all platforms)

  • With an analog stick (controller, Switch, touch joystick), Isaac's speed now follows how far you push it,
like in Rebirth. The dead zone is followed by 40 % speed, rising to full speed at ¾ of the stick's travel.
  • Top speed is never higher than the original. Keyboard and D-pad are unchanged.
  • New isaac.ini option joystick_acceleration (on by default; 0 restores the original all-or-nothing movement).

🎮 Nintendo Switch

  • The touch screen now works during play in handheld mode: the same joysticks, HUD taps and pause button
    next to -LIFE-
as on Android (the button is hidden when docked). touch_controls = 0 turns them off.
  • The left stick is now analog (see above).
  • The Homebrew Menu now shows the author and version 1.2.0.

💻 PC

  • Controllers in menus: menus and the pause screen can be used with the controller alone (A confirms, B goes
back, D-pad / left stick choose). Start / Back pause.
  • New isaac.ini option performance = 1: the performance overlay (F3) is on from startup.

🔊 Audio (all platforms)

  • Sound is mixed directly at the output device's sample rate with cubic interpolation, instead of being resampled
    twice. Cleaner high frequencies.

v1.1.0 - Perfomance and Gameplay Fixes and Improvements

Bug-fix and performance update over v1.0.0. All versions of the recomp were affected.

Fixes

  • Blood/creep puddles dealt "random" damage. The floor check was done at the wrong spot (1.5×–2.25× away from the player), so puddles far away could hurt you and the one under you sometimes didn't. Now it matches what you see.
  • Slowdown in long sessions (and crashes on Switch after 20–30 min). Every sound left an invisible object behind; thousands piled up over time.
  • Hitches after ~30 min of play. The game now produces ~60% less memory garbage, and cleaning it up can no longer make a game tick miss its deadline.
  • Eternal Edition: the hard-mode mark no longer appears on the HUD when hard mode is off.
  • The learned preload list no longer grows without limit, and preloading never fills more than ~60% of the texture atlas.
  • Sound durations now use each sound's real sample rate.

Improvements

  • Lower input latency: the controller/keyboard is read continuously while waiting for the display, so presses don't wait for the next frame (low_latency = 1, on by default).
  • New experimental option interp_lead in isaac.ini (0–0.5) to draw the image slightly ahead. Visual only; the game logic is not affected.

Thank you very much for early feedback! The changes will be reflected in the source code shortly. Quick summary:

  • Fixed a critical bug related to the game's sound system, which was accumulating objects and keeping them in memory, causing crashes during long sessions.
  • Eternal edition: the pentagram symbol on the HUD now only appears in “HARD MODE.”
  • Input lag has been slightly improved.
