Sill 0.4.8

@github-actions github-actions released this 08 Oct 23:36
  • Screenshots: The screen freezes the moment you press the capture key,
so whatever you were hovering, a tooltip or an open menu, is still there
to select. An area capture takes its picture from that frozen screen, which
also ends the faint outline of the selection box that could show up in it.
  • Dictation: Parakeet is a new local model, listed between small.en and
medium.en. It runs inside Sill with no separate server, loads the first
time you dictate and lets go after 30 idle minutes. In tests with long
pauses it kept every sentence where Whisper dropped some. Vocabulary has no
effect on it. It makes sill.exe about 22 MB larger.
  • Dictation: Pasted text goes to the window you were in when you started
dictating. If Windows refuses the paste, the text is on the clipboard and
    the pill says Copied.

  • Screenshots: Clicking a window to capture it takes exactly the window
you see. The picture used to start a few pixels left of the window, so a
band of the invisible resize border ran down the left edge and the same
width was cut off the right, with a band across the top of a maximised
window as well. The window previews in the switcher are fixed the same way.

Sill 0.4.6

@github-actions github-actions released this 25 Sep 14:44
  • Dictation: The local whisper.cpp engine updates on its own schedule
instead of waiting for a Sill release. When a newer stable build is out,
Settings shows a dot on Dictation and an Update button at the top of the
Local server card; nothing installs until it is pressed. The new build
downloads beside the current one and has to match GitHub's published
checksum, still accept every option Sill starts it with, and load your model
before it replaces anything. A dictation being transcribed finishes first.
A build that fails is removed, the previous engine keeps running, and the
    card says what went wrong.
  • Dictation: A first local setup installs whisper.cpp's newest release,
and falls back to 1.9.3 when GitHub cannot be reached or the newest will not
    load a model.
  • Dictation: Transcriptions sent through OpenRouter are credited to Sill.

  • Shortcuts: Alt+Space can be recorded as a key again, including as the
summon key. Pressing it in a Settings key recorder used to open the
window's system menu, which cancelled the recording, and the Space never
    reached the recorder.
  • Launcher: The AI model pill in the search bar has more room around the
service mark and the model name.

Sill 0.4.4

  • Themes: Each card in the Appearance theme picker previews its own
theme. The selected row, the text colour and the colour wash on every card
used to follow whichever theme was applied, so with Oilslick on, all seven
cards showed Oilslick's wash, and Frost Light's pale card had white text.
The glass and chroma sliders and the chosen font still carry into the
    previews.
  • Launcher: The Sill menu button in the bottom left sits flat on the
footer, like the Open and Actions keys beside it, and lights only on hover
or while its menu is open.

Sill 0.4.3

@github-actions github-actions released this 23 Sep 09:48
  • Glass: The fine crosshatch on the window, the action panel, menus and
the glass controls is gone, on every dark theme. Flat tints were painted
as one-colour gradients, which the browser engine dithers into a
two-pixel checker on near-black; they are plain colours now, the same
shade. Measured 1:1 on the release build, 2x2 checker energy on the
action panel went from 0.939 to 0.002 and on the launcher from 0.206 to
    0.020.
  • Launcher modes: Escape in the window switcher followed by the summon
key opens the root list again instead of the switcher. Pickers, the
window switcher, system controls, selection actions and the key sheet
return to the root list once they are done or the launcher hides; lists
you browse, like clipboard history, still reopen where you left them.
"Return to the root list" now applies to every mode except a running
extension, an AI answer or script output. Enter pressed straight after
typing opens a result for what you typed, never one from the previous
list, and a clicked row followed by Enter runs once. The footer names what
Enter does (Switch, Send, Paste, Quit, Move Here) and shows your own
    actions key.
  • Keys: Delete, ? and Tab typed into the action panel's filter edit
the filter; Delete there used to forget the conversation underneath.
Home and End move the cursor when there is text in the search field.
Ctrl+Z undoes the last action only while the field still shows what it
showed when the action ran, and says so. Ctrl+C with text selected in
clipboard history copies that text. On the key sheet, arrows scroll and
Escape goes back to where it opened.
  • Approvals: An Enter that arrives as an approval card appears no longer
allows it: Allow is greyed for the first 0.7 s, and Shift+Enter or a held
key never allows. This covers the launcher, AI mode and the AI Chat
window. The AI asks before reading clipboard history. An extension's
permission card says when a yes is remembered for that extension.
  • Recycle Bin: Move to Recycle Bin never deletes permanently. A file on a
network share, removable drive, CD or RAM disk is refused with a message,
and one too large for the bin is kept.
  • Settings: The window fits the screen the pointer is on, including a
portrait second monitor. The sidebar is grouped into Search, Text, AI,
Capture & Voice and System. Reset resets only what that panel shows, never
turns Private mode off, and Web has its own. Enter in the settings search
opens the first result. Removing an AI provider, an extension, an MCP
server or an AI Chat conversation asks for a second click. Disabled rows
are skipped by the keyboard, and screen readers hear the selected panel,
    saves and the result count.
  • Extension store: When an install grants modules the consent screen did
not list, the install line names them.
  • Screenshot editor: Escape with marks on the picture asks first; a
second Escape within 2 s discards. Closing the editor, including Alt+F4,
    forgets the screenshot.
  • File search: Typing a query Everything has no hits for no longer opens
a console window that closed the launcher mid-typing. The command-line
fallback runs only when Everything cannot be reached, hidden and with a
    time limit.
  • Window switcher and file results: The list takes the full width until
there is a preview to show, instead of sitting in the top left beside an
    empty third.
  • Quiet when hidden: Hiding the launcher from an AI conversation stops
the orb at once: 0.35% of a core in the 18 s after hiding, down from
18.8%. Clock widgets stop while hidden, and switching dictation off stops
    its speech engine.
  • Other windows: A theme change reaches the dictation pill, screenshot
editor, pins and notes the next time they open. The dictation pill and the
tray menu appear on the screen in use, inside its taskbar. Confetti is
    skipped under reduced motion.

  • Recording a hotkey: Setting a key while it is still held no longer
fires it. Recording Alt+Home as the summon key used to summon the launcher
over the Settings window the moment the key repeated, because the new
binding was armed on the key-down that recorded it. A chord whose key is
down when it is bound now waits for that key to be released.

  • Clipboard: Sill no longer empties the clipboard or writes over a copy
you made while it was working. A shortcut that reads the clipboard
(Ctrl+Alt+J, K, R by default) pressed with a picture or a file list on the
clipboard used to leave it empty; a copy made during a transform or a
snippet paste used to be replaced by the older text Sill put back. Sill now
keeps the number Windows gives every clipboard change, restores only when
the last change was its own, and never restores by emptying. Extensions
    and the AI reading the selection, and snippets with a {selection}
placeholder, no longer leave Sill's own copy on your clipboard. A dictated
transcript that is pasted is no longer recorded in clipboard history as
though you had copied it. Every write Sill makes to the clipboard, and
every change the history watcher sees, is one line in sill.log with the
change numbers around it, so a copy that goes missing can be placed
against what Sill was doing at that moment.
  • Widgets: The "This machine" widget is gone, and so is the live CPU, RAM
and Sill MB line under the Widgets row. While the launcher is open, Sill no
longer walks every process once a second: with the launcher visible on an
empty query for 60 s, the release build measured 0.21% of one core, down
from 5.04% on 0.4.0 with the widget pinned, and 5,096 context switches
instead of 12,752 (Get-Counter '\Process(sill)\% Processor Time' -SampleInterval 1 -MaxSamples 60, same machine, same day). Clock, World
clock and Weather are unchanged; a pinned "machine" entry in an existing
    preferences file is ignored.
  • Chrome: Every floating surface wears the same glass: the launcher's
popovers, the model chip and menu button, the clipboard bar's filters, the
store filter, the tooltip, the AI composer and permission card, the
screenshot editor's toolbar groups, the dictation pill, and the model pill
in the AI Chat window, which moved from the foot of the side rail into the
title bar. The Settings, AI Chat and screenshot editor title bars have no
band of their own any more: the sidebar's line runs to the corner and a
conversation scrolls under the bar. When one of those windows is behind
    another, its glass goes out.
  • Icons: The settings panels and the launcher's own rows draw Phosphor
icons, white on a coloured tile, in place of the rendered plaques and the
hand-drawn line glyphs. Fourteen muted hues, with related panels sharing
one. The clipboard kinds and the AI timeline's step marks are Phosphor
too. The 126 plaque images are gone from the app.

Typing keeps up. Every keystroke asked Windows for the list of open
windows, and on a busy desktop that is most of a second of work: with 276
windows open the middle keystroke took 151ms and the worst 909ms. Searching
reads the answer it already has now, and takes 22ms. The list is still
current; it is refreshed a moment after you type rather than while you wait.

The top left says which place you are in. It used to be Sill's logo on
every screen, with the name of the place beside it. Now it is that place: an
extension's own icon, or the art of the settings panel a launcher screen
belongs to, so a screen and the row that opened it are one picture. Nothing is
written next to it, because the picture already said it. At the root, where
you are not inside anything, it is a magnifier.

Sill's own mark is in the bottom left, on the button that opens its menu,
where a caret used to be.

The clock, the battery and the weather sit in the middle of the chin. They
hung off the keys on the right before, so pinning a second reading pushed the
first one sideways. One, two or three now grow out from the centre and stay
there.

You can rank, pin, name and bind a row from the action panel. Those were
settings you had to go and find, about a row you were already looking at.
Naming was already there; the other four have joined it, and all of them are
reachable from a key, from the model and from an automation as well.

Menus are your theme's colour. The light across the top of a popover was
white, which washes a hue out rather than lifting it, so a menu floated on the
window looking a third as coloured as the window under it. Light themes keep
the white, where a tinted highlight would read as a stain.

A Detail view draws pictures. An extension that makes its own chart has
nowhere to put it but the text, and the wall of characters you saw instead of
one was the picture, printed.

The launcher opens at 750 by 509. A fresh install only; if you have ever
changed the size, yours is the one that counts.

Sill is licensed under the AGPL, version 3. Everything up to and including
the 0.3.0 tag was published under MIT and stays available under it.

The last five things you opened lead the list. Nothing typed, and what
you were just doing is at the top, under anything you pinned.

A result is one line. What used to sit under a name now sits beside it,
slightly larger and on the same baseline. An extension's command also says
which extension it came from, which it never did when the command had a
subtitle of its own: Pokédex's Nature command read "Nature, Mechanics" and
the word Pokédex was nowhere on the row.

Scrollbars have no arrows. Windows was drawing a stepper button at each
end of every scrollbar in the application.

Screenshots in the extension store open. Click one and it fills the
launcher. Escape puts it back where you were.

Everything that can have an icon has one. Every action in the panel, and
the launcher's own commands: Reload Sill Index, Save Workspace, Pick a
Colour, Read a QR Code and the capture commands all wore the gear from
whichever settings page their preferences happened to live on. Emoji wore
the Snippets mark while the emoji settings under it wore a smiley.

The menu is your theme's colour. It was the same black on every theme,
and it no longer draws a white ring around itself when it takes the keyboard.

Confetti looks like paper. It tumbles, shows its back as it turns, and
lands on the screen you summoned Sill on rather than across every monitor you
own. The first time you ever asked for it, it drew nothing at all.

The launcher opens a little larger, at 800 by 549. A fresh install only;
if you have ever changed the size, yours is the one that counts.

The AI can search the web, through a SearXNG instance you run yourself.
There is no address in the box to begin with, and with none it says so rather
than reaching for somebody else's server.
