See people, not stereotypes

People living outdoors are neighbors. Housing loss can follow rent increases, illness, violence, job loss, family separation, disability, discrimination, or systems that are difficult to navigate. A tent, backpack, or request for a bathroom does not reveal a person’s character.

Frustration is real; cruelty is not a solution

Blocked paths, trash, noise, and uncertainty can be genuinely frustrating. That does not justify harassment, threats, filming, taking belongings, publishing a location, or treating everyone as dangerous. Keep shared paths usable and raise urgent concerns through safe, appropriate channels.

A respectful response

Ask before approaching. Keep distance. Offer one specific, practical choice. Accept “no.” Share service information without demanding a story. Do not photograph, name, or map a person. For non-emergency needs, use 2-1-1 San Diego or outreach rather than confrontation; for immediate danger call 911.

Using On Record responsibly

The map is synthetic/demo material and not a live shelter feed. Do not add identifying details to a discussion or public record. A public request is not permission to contact, investigate, or follow the person who made it. Compassion and boundaries can coexist.
